Beautiful Sweet Tone - Maximum Quality and Inexpensive
Please, Hohner, make more non-tremolo double reed harmonicas. I guess the demand isn't there yet. It took me a while to learn how to play this because I lip block the upper reeds and mostly play the lower reeds. I will use the upper reeds for transitions and contrast but most melodies I play the lower reeds. You CAN actually draw bend these reeds and it sounds better than any ten hole I have ever played. Compared to the Comet, this has a much more beautiful tone. It could be the wooden comb. I am certainly not a wood comb purist. My favorite mouth organ is the Hohner Super 64 which isn't wood. This Hohner 1493 is inexpensive. It is double reed, octave tuned, of course, and has a gorgeous tone which can be played with maximum expression. I would like to buy it in the other availble Key of G. I wish Hohner would use this design for some of its single reed harmonicas because the volume range is incredible. It would also be nice if the non-Tremolo double reeds were available in more than just two keys. ... Read more

A LOT of meat in this tin sandwich!
To quote that great American Keanu Reeves: "Whoa."

It's a real handful. As a usual player of the Super Chromonica 270, I can say those four extra holes really add heft. The sound is very sweet and mellow, but it does take some wind to play. That 1 blow sounds like a blast from a truck's airhorn! What a powerful sound!

The action on the button sticks from time to time, but other than that, this is the last harmonica you'll ever need.

Sound is best of any Hohner chromatic I have played
The range on this harp dips down one octave below middle C, which is fairly unique and adds to the overall possibilities of this instrument. Over the years, I have played several of the Hohner Chromatics and while this one is a bit more difficult to tongue accurately compared to the CX-12, my feeling is the quality of the sound compared to the CX-12 and 270 makes up for it in spades. I think if I had one Chromatic to own, this would be the one.

If you are a beginner, start out with the 270, it's a great value and it served me well for years. But if you are looking to step up, and can afford the price, I think this harp is well worth looking into. ... Read more

It's just a blue whistle.
What I was expecint was a decent train-sounding whistle.What I got was worse than that.It is very high pitched (in a G note).That's about 4 notes too high.It gets one star for the pretty royal blue paint and train decal painted on the side.And it gets a second star for actually working.That's it.

If you really want the sound that makes you smile in surprise--you know, the one with the deep, resonating overtones backing the shrill of white steam--you'll get the cedar wood Duluth Train Whistle.

This blue one is just too high-pitched, lacks the body, resonance, volume, and tonal range to sound authentic or to trigger your inner locomitive engineer.If the pretty blue color sucks you in, be satisfied if that's all you get.
