The European lute typically has a rounded body composed of steamed and bent strips of wood, a single ornate sound hole, and a long neck bent at the end at nearly 90 degrees. Lutes are frequently made of a mix of hard and soft woods such as rosewood, fir, pine, and spruce. The sound is clear and distinct, yet relatively soft.
