Great instrument for the price
For the price, this recorder is one of the best plastic ones out there. If you are thinking about trying the recorder, I would highly recommend this one over the cheaper ones. The cheaper ones tend to sound shrill when you start playing the higher notes. I think that's part of the reason why recorders have such a bad reputation; kids shrieking on their school issued recorders can send any adult running. In contrast, the Yamaha 302 has a warmer tone and the higher register is not grating on the ears. It comes with a cleaning rod, cream for the joints, a fairly nice carrying case that zips, and a small insert with a fingering chart.

The only drawback to this recorder is that it tends to clog easily. The mouthpeice is thinner, which makes it more comfortable to play, but I think it contributes to the clogging. Of course, clogging in unavoidable in all plastic recorders - all my other recorders clog too so I don't think this detracts from the benefits of this model.

All in all, I have been very happy with mine and I think I could only do better by buying one of the handcarfted wood recorders that run upwards of two hundred.

An attractive entry model for recordists
I frankly bought this because it *looks* cool. The small picture of it here on Amazon doesn't do it justice: the plastichas a wood-tone color (but it's *not* wood-grained like more expensive recorders) and the LMI logo is relatively unobtrusive.The whole recorder has an elegant look to it.If you took this to a park and practiced you wouldn't look half as silly as you would with a transparent pink recorder pressed to your lips.

The LMI Renaissance Soprano recorder also comes with a cleaning rod.This is an important point, because the transparent Yamaha recorders, although surprisingly well-regarded as musical instruments *do not* come with cleaning rods!Considering the shipping and handling charges for a stick which costs forty cents, I decided to throw in a couple of more bucks and get a second recorder out of the deal.It may not have as good a "voice" as the transparent Yamahas, but it looks a whole lot better, and for someone who is having trouble playing a C note on the recorder, anything which helps to protect the vulnerable ego is a welcome help.(Little kids are not going to yell, "Mommy, that man has a piece of plastic colored like boxwood in his mouth!"I shudder to think of what I'd hear with my transparent green Yamaha sticking out of my mouth in some child-infested park.) ... A bit disappointed
I have both the Alto and Soprano 300-series recorders, and have been very pleased with them. I was less pleased with the Sopranino. It just doesn't seem to have the quality that the others do. The fingering holes feel a bit rougher and the sound is not as smooth. This is not a terrible instrument, but definitely not that great, either. ... Read more
