WARNING
I had no problems burning to these discs, its when I went back a few months later to these discs and found out that none of them work anymore. After further research I found out that Memorex uses the cheapest dye available and thus the DVDs have absolutelly no life to them, my discs started dying after a few months.
In addition, in you physically hold the disc in your hands you can feel how warped physically it has become. This is true for all the discs (about 150 of them). I CAN NOT NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT STRONLY ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have an older player get4x
The job I worked at until recently this year had lots of problems with people returning media. I researched this and found that unless your drive is an enternal computer dvd burner, or you have a brand new top of the line TV set top DVD recorder you can't use 8x speed disks end of discussion. so if you are looking for blank disks for a DVD burner you have hooked up to your TV most likely you should not buy these. However These are the only disks I have been able to get to work with my enternal Sony 16x dvd/cd burner. That is if I want them to play in my panasonic surround sound.

Great product
All the dvds i burned on these disc were great. I used DVD-R and DVD+R by memorex. I had the same problems as the person below where the disc would burn perfectly but it wouldnt play anywhere. Its not the discs' fault, Did you check the compatibilty of the disc to the player? I hadnt updated my FIRMWARE and the dvds were not playable anywhere, it showed a succesful burn but would not play. AFter I learned that I had to update my firmware The dvds I burned were just fine.

Perfect!!
I don't know what the other peoples problems were.I have only been using Memorex for the past 6 months, and I rarely, and I mean rarely, have one fail on me.If I do, it is usually because I am trying to do to much with my computer while burning.I have a NEC 3500 and a NEC 2500 and both burn the disks with NO PROBLEMS!Playback is great!If you have an older dvd player then you could experience problems with playback, but not on the newer players.I'm guessing that other people are having "user errors".That's the only thing that I can come up with.
My advice, buy these disks.

Unreliable Product
While using this DVD-R, I had success rate of about 66% to 75%.

I did some research and found out some interesting things. First, I read internet posts describing Memorex 8x DVD-R media doesn't work well at 8x speed and that 4x is recommended for better result. So far this has worked. But this is very disappointing because this product is supposed to work at 8x speed.

Another post I read was much more disconcerting, because the poster wrote his Memorex discs, which he burned months ago, was no longer working and that he lost large number of files.

At this point, I'm considering purchasing different brand of DVD-R and backing up my files all over again just to be safe.

This Product is NO GOOD
The 1st time using was a drag, one worked and the rest did Not.So I gave them to my 2 year old sister that is what they are good for same with the CDS

get a plextor drive!
These DVD-R's work great 0 costers out of 50.. I dont what kind of dvd burners these people are using but if they have a good dvd burner they would not have any trouble burning with these dvd-r's. Oh yea Plextor drives rock!

Poor product

Burns coasters at 8X or fixes wobbly tables
We need a 0 Star rating for this item. The first 3 out of the box had errors after burning.Each failure was immediately rectified by replacing with a 4x memorex, 8x Maxell and a 4X Maxell, so the problem is in the disk itself and not the files or the DVD writer (or the operator).

Like the others say, stay away from these 8X Memorex dvd-Rs unless you need coasters. I recommend the Maxell DVD-Rs at any speed. They are heavier and so far I have had a 100% success rate. ... Read more

Works great at 8x!
I have an NEC burner and these discs work great at 8X. Some people buy them because some Verbatim's carry an MMC003 media code and can burn at 12X. The truth is, Verbatim use to make their own media, but now just rebadges them with thier name and are actually made by varied media manufacturers. In the end, you get varied results when you burn faster than what the media is rated, becuase the media is not always the same, even though it was packaged as Verbatim. If you intend to burn at 8x, then these will be fine for your purposes. But if your intent is to burn these at above 8x, be careful, different burners will get varied and unstable results, becuase you'll never know what you'll end up with.

THE ULTIMATE DVD-R.
I don't know how they did it, but TDK has made one hell of a durable product here. I tried to scratch it with my fingernail... nothing. I tried rubbing it HARD on my carpet... nothing. I tried skidding across my linoleum kitchen floor... nothing. I tried scraping it with a sharp metal nail... OK this time I scratched it. Bottom line, unless you're actively trying to destroy it, it won't give in! And of course you'll be handling it carefully anyway, so under normal use it'll be fine. Got smudge? Wipe it with your shirt!

TDKR- on Panasonic DMR95HS
I purchased a 50 pack of TDK R- for my DVD recorder after being told by a Panasonic rep they would work in my player.They do not! They may work fine in other machines but I would not recommmend them for a Panasonic player.

DVD Quality
DVD quality whether its a most pricy DVD or least, is the same. The difference in DVD is how long it will last.

Unfortunately, for at least now, there is no way to technically say which brand will last the longest. DVD that scrash easy tend to give the most problem reading, but that same DVD may actually run perfect on another piece of dvd hardware.

The bottom line is that its best to buy what you feel most confortable with, and see how they do. But as for digital quality, the medium is always the same so it will not matter.

As for DVD lasting for 75 years and more, this is only possible with very special care and controled enviroment which even in companies you will not find.

From my experience with carefull handleling my DVD have up to now lasted 6 years but no more, buy that time scrashes have made them unreadable on all medias. So if your use to handleling DVD keep an eye on scrashes, since they will give you the most problems.

If any dvd fails try if you can another dvd viewer, some manufacturers also have chips that will not allow copy material to work and has nothing to do with the dvd it self.

So its better to try in multiple places before saying that a dvd does not work.

the speed is how fast your recorder writes
mr barton seems mistaken.

the 4x refers to how fast ones dvd writer can burn the dyes on the disk.not the same as sp,lp,slp modes on a vhs-vcr.

compasity is 120 in reference to how compressed your video is.on a dvd.it starts at 1 hour and goes to 4 depending on how good a quality picture you need.Personally I use the best for movies, and the good for tv.

frankly any name brand seems as good as any other.When bought in spindle , be extra careful handling your disk.. some writers are extremely demanding as to how clean your disk must be.I personally prefer to get my disks in slim cases.the difference is small and the disk is always fresh and clean.

Amazon - delete Barton's review - it is misleading and wrong
The review provided by Mr. Barton is misleading, despite the banner of a "top 500 reviewer".AMAZON - get rid of it.

The disks are just fine - run-of-the-mill - and work great in my Sony DVD recorder - but the recordings made on them are DIGITAL and any quality variance is either a source-media/connection or a DIGITAL COMPRESSION issue. VCRs are an analog technology where the more media crosses the recording head the better. On a DVD - the spin rate is the same during recording at any speed and as long as data gets on the disk, the quality will be identical on any blank DVD provided the recorder, source, and playback units are the same.

What's more important on blank DVDs is the durability of the physical media itself - some manufacturers are up to 1/2 the thickness and the protective layers are compromised.These TDK DVDs are medium grade - fine for most uses.

Mr Barton - I have a great 10 year old RCA VCR that's for sale.Perhaps you should stick with that technology for a while and hit the search engines for a run down of how DVDs work before you post another review.

Absolute rubbish, Barton's review is incorrect
I also highly recomend TDK DVD-Rs and it is the only brand I buy but Mr. Barton's review is not only innacurate, it is absolute rubbish, and to set the record straight here is the technical explanation:
DVD recorders do not spin at different speeds when recording. The different modes XP, SP, LP and EP refer to the quality of the digital "compression" so you can fit one hour, two hours, four hours or six hours onto the same surface. The recorder never goes slower or faster when recording, only VHS recorders do that, so Mr. Barton doesn't know a DVD from a VHS.
Furthermore, when recording DVDs, you can buy the chepeast or the more expensive brand and it won't make one bit of a difference in the "quality of recording". Stating that the TDK records better at "slower" speeds compared to another brand is simply not true.
If you buy cheap VHS media you get worse quality but in the case of DVDs, the worse that could happen is that it will not work and be rejected by your recorder, or you may have compatibility problems later but the "quality" of the image will always be the same regardless of brand. ... Read more

Great quality media, but pricey.
These Apple 8x DVD-R discs are made in Japan by Hitachi-Maxell.Maxell DVD-R media is considered among the highest quality in the world, alongside that made by manufacturer Taiyo Yuden.These discs certainly uphold the Maxell reputation.All discs burned successfully, with no playback problems in the case of video DVDs.Also, PIE/PIF levels were very low when checked with my Lite-On DVD burner and kprobe, and my Plextor burner with Plextools.The biggest drawback to these is the per disc price.It's cheaper to buy a spindle of Maxell-branded 8x DVD-Rs IMO, but this is a good way to test the discs out before you take the plunge on a spindle. ... Setup
The only difficultyI found in using the DVD-R's was getting the DVD-R out of the jewel case. If youtry to pull it open from the top, and the plastic just bends (and you can see thatit is clasped in the middle). When I tried placing my thumb on the middle of theright edge and pulling outward, my thumb would just slip off. The best way I foundto open the case (after much experimentation) was to place the palm of my hand onthe front of the cover, and while applying light pressure with my palm, using myfingers to left the right middle edge open. I've never seen another case open likethis before, so without knowing this trick up front (no instructions on the box),some less patient consumers may find more drastic ways of freeing the DVD from the case. Once you know the trick, it's pretty easy.

Case aside, the DVD-R itself is just like any other DVD-R. Load it into your Mac'sDVD burning drive (whether the Superdrive or a 3rd party drive), and run your DVD-burningsoftware. Piece of cake.

In Use

Excellent product
I originally bought three packs of these because they were on sale at Best Buy for 4.99 per 3 pk--a little less than 1/3 of the cost listed here.I've checked BestBuy's site and they have them for 9.99.Don't know if I got lucky on the price or what.

I needed the -R format because my, ah, lower end set-top DVD players (as opposed to my most excellent Pioneer 106D burner!) won't read +Rs with any reliability.Only one +R movie was actually viewable on them whilst both PowerDVD and WinDVD and Media Player read them just fine; so I knew it was the players' problems, not the disks; my mother's high end set top can read +Rs no problem.

It reads my DVD-RWs just fine (a good way to see if you've burned it right without risking creating another coaster; you can always just erase and start over!) The two players I have are both APEX's.Good players, light of features, of course, but that's why they are "lower end."The electronics are basically the same, it's the bells and whistles that cost.

So, I bought these Verbatim -Rs because they were much cheaper than anything else on the shelves and, besides, they look cool.

I've legally backed up four DVDs now and have had ZERO problems with these disks.I highly recommend them, espcially if you have a piece of hardware that's got issues with DVD+Rs.
