vulnerable cable
I ordered a ethernet cable here Nov 28 2003
I used the cable in my office and seldom move it(I know how to plug and unplug it carefully), but it stopped working now(definitely becuase of the cable, believe me, as an electronic engineer I know how to test it).

I have used a lot of very chip even DIY cables, but never saw a cable vulnerable like this.

You had better check all your cables and never make $ on those poor stuff again.

stay away - USB 1.1
This is an improvement over my last KVM, which would only merit one star. This KVM gets a second star because it provides good video quality at 1280x1024 and has a hardware as well as a software switch mechanism.

It has two USB ports. Don't be deceived by the labeling that says one port is for the mouse and one is for the keyboard. You can plug any USB device into either - including a USB hub. USB is USB.

Actually there are two different kinds of USB. There is the older and much slower USB 1.1 vs. the now ubiquitous USB 2.0. However, they are entirley compatible. You just lose significant performance if you plug a 2.0 device into a 1.1 port.

My biggest complaint is that you will naturally want to connect a USB hub to the KVM to share more than just slow devices like a mouse and keyboard. For example, a digital camera, MP3 player, external hard drive, cell phone, printer, scanner, etc. Then you will discover that these devices now run SOOO SLOOOW. The problem is that this device is USB 1.1 instead of the ubiquitous USB 2.0 that you would assume it is, and you must ASSUME because nowhere on their package, booklet, disk, or web site do they mention this critical flaw.

Another short sighted feature is that the USB and audio cables are too short where they split off at each end. If I plug in the USB cable on my laptop, the audio cable needs about six more inches to reach the audio port - and laptops aren't exactly big.

Another problem with laptops is that if yours even starts to go into standy mode, this KVM will no longer recognize it until you reboot it.

If you can be certain that you will NEVER want to share a USB 2.0 device, which is astronomically unlikely, then this is a good KVM.

Didn't detect my keyboard - no use
I tried to use this switch with two Windows machines, one ME and one XP.I just needed the keyboard & mouse switch, as the display took care of itself (one machine had VGA and the other DVI).I had a Dell keyboard and a Logitech mouse.The mouse worked fine right away, but not the keyboard.Basically, both machines said that they're detecting "an unknown USB device" and there was no way to use the keyboard thru the switch, with any of them.
I e-mailed Belkin and their response was as follows:

KVMs will work best when there is a standard PS/2 or USB mouse and keyboard attached to the console. Ensure that a standard keyboard and mouse is attached to the console (not a Logitech, multimedia or wireless type) and that Standard drivers or HID drivers are in use at the workstations. Reseat all connections again and swap ports if necessary.

So, a logitech mouse is not "standard" enough for them?Or a 3-year Dell keyboard?And where on the box does it say that this product only works with some, unspecified devices?!
BTW, I also noticed that the switch itself is "sticky" -- it took several seconds of nervous clicking before it moved from one computer to the other.
But anyway, I'm returning this useless gizmo to the store.A waste of time.

Horrible, horrible product
I use this switch with a Windows XP machine and a G5 Power Mac running OS X 10.3.8. I chose not to install the software that would enable hotkey switching since the included software is Windows-only. The only way you can switch from a Mac with this switch is by using the manual button on the switch. So I can't speak to any software issues -- all I'm trying to do is plug the thing in and try to press the button to switch from one computer to the other.

The product behaves erratically, switching between computers at random while I'm working. Most of the time, the button does not respond or will switch from computer 1 to computer 2 but immediately switch back. It is completely useless. It looks nice and it would be great if it performed as advertised, but it has not worked at all for me.

Works Great! No problems!
I've used this KVM switch to connect a desktop PC and a MAC powerbook.It worked great for both.Having the speakers and mic is a great feature that I did not find in other KVMs.I have not had any problems.

seemingly incompatible with *nix
I purchased this product because of favorable past experience with Belkin - a name I usually associate with quality and reliability.With this particular device my trust was grossly misplaced.(Note that my review is based on the second unit - the first had to be RMA'ed because it started to switch between the two machines every few seconds).

The built in cables and the audio (with microphone!) support are nice - the concept is solid, but unfortunately it just doesn't work: on the second machine I attempted Knoppix (Live), SuSE (Live) and Mandrake Linux.With all three the kvm would not maintain focus on the linux machine and would switch back to the other device.Fedora (core 3) would lose focus after about 20 seconds throughout the install but once I actually logged into the GUI (I had to type quickly) it would hold.Until I ran the update utility at which point it would not hold focus on the logon screen for longer than a second or two, making logon impossible.

Slackware 10 was the only version of linux I tested that would hold the focus as one should expect, never losing focus at any point of installation or use - but if I switched to the other box and back while Slackware was out of the GUI then the keyboard/mouse would never be detected.

Both boxes were slow to redetect the device after regaining focus - the XP machine would take several seconds to have keyboard and mouse redetect and activate.

Messages to Belkin's tech support and customer service (asking for a refund) have been ignored.

I speculate that if both boxes were running some flavor of Windows (or Slackware) the device would function as expected and reasonably well (except for the delay in redetection) so in those environments the device may be usable.But the device I purchased from another manufacturer works flawlessly and is much faster on the detection when I jump to the other box and works with every flavor of *nix that I tested.

In the end I wish had not wasted the money on this device - and Belkin's silence will make me think twice before trusting them again. ... Read more

Works smoothly
I really don't understand why people blame Amazon or Palm for this cable while the description clearly says it's for certain models, and says it's for models with the universal connector.I wish people would take responsibility for themselves more.

Anyway, I got this cable because my office PC runs NT, and it doesn't support USB.The serial cable works perfectly.It doesn't charge your Palm (I have the T2), unlike the USB charge/hotsync cable, and speed is low compared to USB, but it gets the work done.

There is, however, one caveat:you cannot transfer MP3 files with the serial cable, because Real Player cannot recognize it.Palm should really move away from Real and opt for something better; Real is all about bloatware and spyware -- I don't know a single soul who likes its intrusive "message center" annoyance.

The workaround is you'll need to copy the MP3 files to the SD card directly, into the "\music" folder on the card.If you have a laptop with an SD slot, you'll be fine.But chances are if you are still running NT, your laptop won't have the slot.Also all SD card readers are USB.So in the end, it's probably best to upgrade, or borrow your friend's win2k or XP machine.

In short, this cable is cheap and light and seems durable (if you take care in disconnecting the Palm).

Not compatible with Tungsten E
I bought this cable along with my Tungsten E, because I wanted a serial hotsynch cable for my laptop.However, it doesn't work with the Tungsten E, which allows only for a mini-USB connector; this is the standard "universal" Palm connector - universal, apparently, except for Tungsten E.I advised Amazon.com of this when I returned it, but they are still selling it with the Tungsten E.Don't be fooled!Palm does not make a cradle or a serial cable for the E.

I bought one of these chargers.It broke within a couple of days.So being loyal to palm I bought another... which never worked!I have a ton of palm stuff and I havent written anything bad about the company, but I found that workmanship to be much lower then what I would expect from such an established company.

Makes a huge difference over stock cables.
Now I used to sell camcorder & digital cameras for a living and one of the neater things we did was show customers the exact difference between cables. We had one tv hooked up with two cables: a "stock" one from a camcorder box (the free cables they provide you when you purchase the item) and one of these Monster Camlink (CamAV) upgraded cables that we sold seperately.

It Works!!
Easy setup, I received this package and was eagerto install. Sharring a printer. One thing to mention it does require on regular printer cable and TWO male to male cables to hook two pc's up to one printer. So order an extra cable with it. Easy set up again, didn't have to install any HW for the printer. Seems to take jobs very fast.

No complaints at all
The Bitronics Autoswitch works just as you'd expect.I boughtit at amazon.com to switch between a HP Laserjet 6L and an HP Officejet scanner/printer/fax... the Laserjet is my main printer, but occasionally I use the Officejet to scan pictures and the like.(And note that there's no problem using bi-directional devices like scanners.)

It works like a champ.No need to install the (optional) software, no need to plug it in-- just hook up the cables and you're good to go.You just press a button to switch between the two devices.

Only thing to know is that there's nothing "automatic" about this-- you need to do the switching yourself.The word "automatic" refers to another way you can use this switch-- to hook two PCs up to a single device.I don't need this capability, so I haven't tried it.
