Outstanding - but with limitations
This is an outstanding piece of software, no doubt about that. I just want to point out one limitation you should be aware of : Reason 2.5 does NOT allow audio recording and - as you can read on Propellerhead's homepage - version 3 will not allow it either.
In order to record (and mix) audio tracks associated with a Reason project, you'll need a Rewire compatible program (like newer versions of SONAR and Cubase) that will run Reason as a slave unit.
However, the Rewire function is a part of the Reason package and it works nicely. As everything else.

What a virtual studio should be like
Reason 2.5 is the most intuitive music composition software available, particularly due to the fact that it emulates music hardware rather than work like software.Those who are familiar with such hardware will recognize many of the tools: mixer, samplers, synths, drum machine, and effects devices.You can organize these devices on a virtual rack.Press the Tab key and it flips to the back of the rack, showing all the inputs/outputs, gates and cables, as if you were looking at the back of actual hardware. Simply amazing.

When one can buy Reason for less than $400, it's hard to justify the hardware route costing perhaps ten grand (FYI: an even better bargain is the Reason 2.5 / M-Audio Ozone keyboard package for around $430).In other words, the program is tremendous value for money, and combined with Pro Tools, has the potential to produce professional-quality sound.Furthermore, Reason allows the user to focus on making music, rather than wasting time moving around hardware and physically reconnecting them.You can test various ideas quickly (e.g. try out different effects) since you can hook up devices without leaving your seat.

Reason also has a great sequencer, which logically converts the temporal nature of music into visual, spatial data.The sequencer should therefore be readily accessible for people who have basic experience with graphics software (e.g. Illustrator, CAD) and easy to learn for those who don't.

The one thing you can't do with Reason is take samples/loops from existing songs.For instance, I can't lift a section off a Metallica guitar solo or Mozart string quartet or whatever and create a new pattern from that.To do this, you need ReCycle, another software product from Propellerhead.

The manual that comes with the software isn't great, but it's enough to get you started and overcome the not-so-steep learning curve to start making songs.Actually, this is the first of a few learning curves and down the road one should invest in a real manual to help refine the sound.As Reason has so many possibilities, it's best to concentrate on the song and sounds you want to make rather than get bogged down by the endless combinations of devices and control settings.After all, you probably wouldn't be considering this product if you didn't have a few specific musical ideas stuck in your head.

Versatile Music Composition Tool
What is Reason?It's a software replica of a recording studio that includes mixers, samplers, synths, and a plethora of effects devices.It's a processor hog, so be sure you get the fastest computer you can afford to run this bugger.It's easy to use, intuitive, and the sounds are first class.The users manual could stand some improvement, but there are books out there that can help.It is worth noting that the learning curve is shortened considerably if you've worked in a "real" recording studio environment, and you probably won't plumb all the depths of this versatile software without a little but of real world experience.

lots of music for the money
I just started on reason 2.5 about a month ago, and once you make it over the learning curve (which isnt long) you have an incredible tool at your disposal!
Super fun and user friendly reason 2.5 comes stock with great ingredients to get started right away. Once you get the hang of it there are really infinite possibilities as you can edit sounds in all instruments as well as apply great effects, and its limited only by how much space you have on your hard drive. While I can see some limitations, theyre on a very limited scope and unless your able to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and have unlimited time to build a huge proffessional studio you wont need to worry about it. Absolutely the best and most thourough all around software for the money.

Reason 2.5 is my best friend right now !

Great Way to start recording fast!
This was the way I learned about recording, and I still use it to this day with my home recording (along with several other programs), It has great tools, and is very easy to use.

It DOES support XP, Great product for the money
I love this product.Really good economical pc based recorded.

If you're going to make the investment the only thing I recommend is that you have a high end sound card.

Oh yeah, It DOES support Windows XP.One other reviewer claimed it did not.I run Windows XP Pro without a glitch.

No XP support....
Purchased this about a year and a half ago...just got a new computer running XP...this is not compatible. No updates available from Cakewalk but they did suggest I purchase one of their NEWER products that is XP compatible.

Guitar Tracks 2 -> Wav -> MP3
I'd just like to clear up an issue that a couple of people have posted here concerning MP3 limitations with this product.I believe the built in MP3 encoder only has 20 uses before you have to register it.However, you can still output to .wav as many times as you like.

Some people have mentioned that there is encoding in the output .wav file that stops you creating an MP3 file from it using a 3rd party program.

Well, I've just tried creating a .wav in Guitar Tracks 2, creating an MP3 from it in cdex (freeware), then playing it in winamp (freeware also).I had no problems at all.

My point is this - there is no MP3 limitiation with this product so don't let it put you off buying it because is it's fantastic!!...

Great starter package for home recording
Great value - everything I expected and more. Having no previous recording/mixing experience, I found it very intuitive for learning the basics in the year since installing the software. I started with direct input from my instruments but now run guitar amp line out and mics though a small Behringer mixer to the line in on a Soundblaster Live Value card. System is a Gateway Athlon 700MHz, Win2k Pro. Plan on lots of hard disk space if you're not familiar with uncompressed audio.

Results have been incredible - I'm a one man band ;-)

The drum library is somewhat limited but with some patience I have been able to piece together some really nice drum tracks. Was a little disappointed with the limited number of MP3 mixdowns, but the wav files can be converted via any 3rd party conversion software (I use Audiograbber/LAME).

I also use it to digitize and tweak the audio from camcorder jam session recordings, old vinyl albums, or any other analog audio source for that matter. I've even been able to clean up and remix some old home cassettes from 1975.

Overall this package serves my needs very well, though I will probably upgrade to Guitar Tracks Pro soon for the additional drum capabilities and more tracks (this goes to 11). ... Read more

Apple did a good job streamlining this product
With the price jump from around [$$$] for Logic Platinum to around [$$$] for Logic Pro, it's worth while considering that Logic Plat didn't come with any of the soft synths that are built into it. You have to pay an average of between [$$$] for each extra instrument [along with the vocoder and space designer] so the [$$$] price jump isnt bad at all. I bought Logic 6 Platinum and the upgrade price to Pro is worth it and I am very glad that I did NOT buy the seperate instruments. If you already did, then the upgrade might not be as worth it. I can't find too much info on what else is new or improved with this version. Logic may have a learning curve, but once you learn it inside and out, it's probably the most powerful Audio/MIDI package available. If only audio is your primary concern and you want something simple, then ProTools should be considered. But if you want total control over everything, then Logic is the way to go. Id say Logic for composers and more complex music, and ProTools for bands looking to record. Logic is also compatible with TDM hardware systems.

A big improvement over the VSTversion.
I've been a Cubase user for years now and when Cubase went from VST to SX, I was a little hesitant to try it at first. But being the curious person I am, I decided to go down to my local music store and mess around with it. It took me years to learn how to use Cubase VST (I even had too buy a book at Amazon to help me learn it) with it's weird, confusing, non-user-friendly design. It took me minutes to learn Cubase SX. Cubase actually started a whole new program from scratch on this software and so you have a whole new, user-friendly, sequencing design that completely dwarfs the old retired Cubase VST. SX MIDI drifts!
This used to be a very reliable program.Upgrading to SX has been a big disappointment.A few features that were great in VST 5.1 are missing, such as: fast left and right movement of the transporter, insert bars, keyboard shortcut for fixing the length of notes, etc.

If you import Cubase projects from previous versions, all audio fader settings and changes are lost!So if you have previous Cubase versions and you are planning to revise some of your older work, do not un-install those versions.

The worst thing by far, though, is the MIDI drift.Check out the Cubase support forums, and you will find dozens and dozens of complaints (some dating back to late 2001) regarding drifting MIDI, which gets worse by the minute.You hit "record", you play a note exactly where it is supposed to go, and Cubase displays that note either too late or too early.In fact, if you are recording a sequence of notes, Cubase will either not record the beginning notes at all or playback notes that you think you already recorded a few beats ago while you are trying to record new notes!

While it is great that Steinberg decided to re-design their program from scratch, they should have spent more time testing it.
