Good except for one obnoxious thing...
I bought this from EBay in January 2004, and from what I see today Amazon is offering an excellent price.

On first appearance, this software looks to be complciated to learn.The thing is, they packed it with more features than I personally would ever need.If you have the patience, you can really get some neat things out of the software.I played around with it, but eventually discarded the manual and started using it just like my old tape-drive 4-track recorder.Build-in metronome?Cool.Don't need it.Built-in effects?Might use it someday.Not today.So - you can get off the ground with the basic pretty quickly.One really neat thing is graphicly selecting regions that you want to punch in before hitting record.All in all, really good.

There are a couple of clunky thing about it that you can work around easily - if you try to record a track before selecting an input device, for example, that track isn't going to work again (so just deleted it and make a new one).Double-clicking a Cakewalk file from file explorer results in an error, so bring up the application first, then load the file.I haven't run into any really drastic bugs, but makes me wonder when I will.

Okay - my big beef - you have to pay extra to enable mixing down to MP3.I personally find it very obnoxious to buy a fully-featured, production piece of software - and then they want MORE MONEY - $30 - to enable what should be a standard feature.You can mix down to plenty of formats, sure, but let's face it, you'd expect MP3 to be a pretty standard format to use.I feel cheated and not respected as a customer of the product when the developers resort to this kind of money-grubbing.

Well, I was going to give 2 starts because of the MP3 thing, but to be fair, overall this is a really nice piece of software, so it deserves a balanced review.Happy recording!

Powerful but hard
I bought the program, so that I could be able to record MIDI. I have an Casio WK-1800 keyboard, which I thought to connect to my computer. I connected the keyboard with a Yamaha UX-16 Midi in/Midi out to USB connector. I have gone through zillions of e-mails with support, and they don't seem to be able to make it work.

Otherwise, the program is a powerful workhorse, only if you spend hours and hours of figuring everything out. As an first-timer, I don't recommend this product. But as an professional, go for it.

Good value - if you have the patience
I bought this as a home recording novice. Whereas my prior home recording experience was limited to a microphone and an office tape recorder, my knowledge of desktop computers and how they operate is extensive. Novices be aware that Cakewalk has a steep learning curve with regard to troubleshooting. Don't expect to install and be recording right away. This is a very complex program and it seems the possibilities for conflicts with other software on the computer is endless. I can't imagine having to wrestle with this beast not having the computer knowledge that I have. For example, to avoid dropouts I have to set my soundcard and Cakewalk audio mode to ASIO. It will not record in the standard MME mode and to this day I have no idea why and have explored every possible soundcard conflict to no avail.

That being said - if you are up to a couple weeks of trying to defeat the beast, Cakewalk does provide a tool for you to make pro-quality digital recordings at a bargain price. You have unlimited tracks for audio and MIDI instruments. I only use the audio tracks to record guitar and bass compositions. The drum machine included in the software is kind of weak so I recommend getting a CD of professional drum loops. With a good drum loop I can record a bass line, rythm guitar track, and lead guitar track with sound quality that match any store-bought CD I own.

The options to tweak your sound are practically infinite. So you are limited only by time and your imagination.

If you think it will be too much of a hassle, I understand. Otherwise, if you have the courage and determination, you will eventually reap the rewards.

The Jury is Still Out
After an apparently successful installation, the "Wave Profiler," module repeatedly crashed my machine. Installation of the patch offered by Cakewalk did not seem to be of any help.

At present, I am able to record MIDI. Due to the aforementioned problem with wave profiler, however, I am unable to record instruments through mic/line input.

I believe this software does have potential. Hopefully I will be able to realize it in the near future. This reveiew will be updated accordingly.

This one's a winner. Check it out.
It was really cool how this CDROM was put together. Very user friendly & easy to install & run. You can hear the finished product, watch the guitar tabs to see how it is played with adjustable MIDI Music control to speed it up or slow it down. Mute the part you want to play & jam along with the band. Cool stuff! It also includes a brief history of the song & the artist, which is always interesting.

If I had had this type of instruction as a teen I probably wouldn't have sucked so bad as a musician. I would have been able to better keep up my interest & enthusiam because CDROMs like this provide continuous access & infinite patience in teaching the more difficult songs & unique styles. I always learned from friends who gave me 5 minutes, then walked.

Granted this CD includes a diverse, "something-for-everyone" approach adding classical & country tunes to rock & blues. For that I only gave it four stars & also because there is no clip of the musician actually playing the guitar on the Demo like Voyetra's "Teach Me Rock Guitar". But it must be conceded that Voyetra could only fit four songs on their CD while this one has 21 diverse tunes. eMedia website also provides good software support for these guitar series.

Great Product!
This CDROM has it all. Music, TAB, play along with either the MIDI version of the song OR the audio version. The audio versions have track muting capability so you can mute the vocal or the Guitar or Bass.The nicest feature is the animated fret board so you if you don't know a chord or aren't that familiar with playing lead in the 7th position: have no fear, this feature cuts right through all of that. Great software
I'm in my 40's and was able to pick up my father's 30 year old electric bass and learn how to play very quickly. I've been using the program about 3 months and try to play 1/2 to 1 hour every day. Besides learning the songs included in the program I have been able to play Cream songs Badge and Sunshine of Your Love by teaching myself.

As for the details:
1. There is no problem with XP. I have a desktop and a laptop and both run the program without any problems
2. Tuner works great and is very very helpful
3. The program records your playing whenever you want. It is easy to use
4. When playing songs you can turn off the bass line in the song, leave the bass line in, or just play the bass line without the music
5. Moving between lessons is painless and very easy

I can't say enough about this software. It's great and I am only on lesson 43.

You won't be disappointed with the software. It's a good investment and you will be very happy with the results

No more beginner's books! ** WORKS WITH THE MAC! **
Forget beginner's books! Save your money and buy this program, the ability to play along with the computer while you watch the notes/chord progression alone is something that no book/ audio cd will ever match. The way the lessons are presented is excellent, giving visual types like me direct re-enforcement on what the lesson is all about by giving you follow-along examples, and most importantly encouraging you to improvise and experiment. I've been learning the bass on and off for a couple of years and while I can already play along with many songs and improvise a bit I have found even the most basic lessons in this program to be very useful. I'm really looking forward to the sight reading section of the course! Highly recommended! If #2 is ever issued I'll buy it!

Finally a CD-ROM for bass!
My friend really liked eMedia's guitar CD-ROM, so I got their Bass Method the second I saw it at Circuit City. The lessons were easy to follow and the videos had demonstrations for both the left and right hands. DUBROOM.com Review on REASON 3.0: The DUB is in there
After reviewing this program for a week, with a computer matching the minimum reuirements, I am more than convinced.

Without the use of any gadget or sound other then REASON 3.0 and the Computer with qwerty-board and mouse, I was able to create some DUB vibes allready.

DUB? Yes!

Reason 3.0 is the first program that enables you to create professional DUB music with one piece of software alone. That shouldn't come as a too big surprise, given the fact that Propellerhead Software is responsible for REBIRTH, another great piece of software that has brought some producers to pretty high heights.

Talking about high heights, Reason 3.0 is in that same position. Is it the Propellerhead, or something different? I wouldn't know. But I do know, that they have once again set the stanard for the "Virtual" Studio for many years to come.

It's very easy to make very cheesy music with this
This is basically a very nice program with everything you need to make your own tracks. The only problem is that it very much pushes you in the direction of producing ultra-standard music that lacks personality. The synths sound super-cheesy, which isn't helped by the often horrible presets. The provided demo-songs are point-in-case. Why they are included is beyond me, since they often sound plain terrible and are not a very good ad for the program. This can also be contributed to the included sound-library, which is mediocre at best. You'd best use your own sounds.

For churning out run-of-the-mill trance and hip-hop this is not a problem at all. You might be able to produce several ok sounding tracks a day with this program. People who want to push the envelope a bit will have to put in a lot of effort though. Reason *does* offer the material for experimentation and the hard-working and resourceful musician will find ways to make new sounds. Just don't expect anything like Reaktor or MAX/MSP and get used to to preparing and loading lots of samples, with only a minor role for the bland synthesizer modules. ... Read more

Impressive results to be had from comprehensive collection
I am surprised that this is the first review for GPO on Amazon, considering the growing following this collection has.
This is one impressive product - a comprehensive list of sounds, that work very well together.Obviously the samples in more expensive packages are more impressive in their basic sound, but if used with skill it is truly astonishing what can be achieved with this set - one has only to listen to the numerous user demos on their web site to see for yourself.The situation here is that the sum is in fact greater than its parts.
In this price range, there really isn't anything that can compare to it.The quality of the results achievable are good enough for professional use, and in fact it is getting considerable professional application in many different areas.

Anyone looking for orchestral sounds, but unwilling (or more likely unable) to the spend the thousands necessary for the big libraries should take a look at what is being offered here.

They must know something
Look... If you need software to CREATE music but have no skills with music production, instruments or stuff then this is your tool. It's easy, it's fun and it's cheap, I'm 16 and on a parental buget so cheap is good. Loop based music arrangements like that old Sonic Foundry Acid program but cheaper and easier. I can use mp3 files, CD files, MIDI files and even video. I can even create a website with the software. Created a song in under 5 minutes, I added video later and I can't say enough about it.

I am hooked... this almost makes it to easy.

The only thing that is lame is that the mp3 encoder is extra. no biggie. I say if your into music you need this program.

If you are crashing....Music Maker Deluxe is my secret weapon, Music Maker Deluxe 2004 (MMD 2004) coupled with 2 other programs I currently use, are proving to be a winning combination for me.Those who have listened to the beats I am pounding out using MMD 2004 are astonished by the layered arrangements and effects this program gave me.Anyone out there who builds beats from scratch and limits their sampling would be impressed with this application.The virtual instruments are cool......bottom line!!!!Even the sampling savy "beat pirates" out there would enjoy this program.It works on my vaio buddy.....LOLThe people that will have problems with this program don't read instructions and have too much porn saved to their hard-drive!!!!!!!I'm out

This was a huge no no
This is not only (much like music maker generation 7) highly unstable but pretty useless on both my of my Sony Vaios (Computer Brand). Do not waste your money on this program it was a great disapointment because the crash ratio was higher them the running time.Even after cleaning my memory (as stated in the instructions)it crashed just as bad on both my Pentium 4 and my Athlon.Not only did it crash alot but the program effects broads, such as the guitar effects, need to be updated or done away with. They constintly errored out and most effects that was advertised on the box just plain out did not work. Stick with Sonic Foundry or final cut 4 both are alot better programs to work with.

I do better using built-in Win apps and CD Burn software
I do better using the built-in Windows multimedia applications and the 'Nero' burner and wave editing software that was bundled with my CD burner.This was the MOST disappointing purchase I have ever made in my life.Nothing on the box even HINTS at the license agreement restrictions, which requires you to upgrade to a 'pro' (or 'royalty free') product if you don't want to include something similar to 'Created via MAGIX' in anything you publish, even the FREE stuff (either that or violate the license agreement), regardless of whether or not you use any of the samples.Further, I couldn't even load a simple MIDI file without the application CHANGING THE TEMPO and as well as all of the patch information in the process.So after converting the MIDI file to '.wav' format (using the windows application 'sndrec32' and the media player, like I usually do) I then added this track as #1, and started trying to add extra tracks, only to find out that the ONE feature that would have made this valuable was missing:NO 'per channel' graphic equalizers!And the "tone control" (not even a graphic EQ) had only 3 levels for bass, mid and treble!Even the free software that came with my CD Burner (namely, Nero Wave Editor) has a multi-band graphic EQ in it (and you can even change the frequencies for each band).So much for "effects".I was completely dissatisfied.I immediately uninstalled it and looked on the box for "money back guarantee" so I could return it.And you know what?There's no money back guarantee. (...).

If you already have version 7, DON'T GET THIS
I am a frequent user of Music Maker 7 Deluxe, and it is better on so many levels than this its insane.I was very stoked to buy this product when I heard it had guitar modelling and all the great features in 7 enhanced.BUT,I bought it and realized they took out some of my favorite drum sounds, which worked the best for rock (I am a drummer who likes to make rock music in MM).In addition, there are tons of bugs, crashes, and other annoyances to worry about.The guitar modelling is difficult to use and doesn't really sound like guitar (although its better than what you had before.)The interface is also worse than before.I am very disappointed and pray to god that a patch comes out so my 60 bucks isn't wasted.
