Different Tonal Concept from Selmer
I own the Keilwerth SX90R, which is the same as this model, but mine is the next model "up" the spectrum because it has rolled tone holes.I have played this model, and I can't tell the difference between the rolled and non-rolled toneholes.

I own a Yamaha Custom 82Z as well, and I've owned several Selmers, a Yanagisawa, and a Yamaha Custom 875 in addition to the Z.For the majority of my playing I prefer the Yamaha 82Z which sells for slightly less than this Keilwerth, but I have held onto the Keilwerth.

Keilwerth has a slightly different design concept than the others I've mentioned.Basically every Selmer professional model, and every Japanese professional model of the last 40 years has been a variation on the fabled Selmer Mark VI.The manufacturers have attempted to improve the ergonomics, they've altered the neck here and there, but they are sound more or less the same as a Mark VI although newer horn models tend to be a bit brighter.

Keilwerth is the exception.The bell is bigger, and the keys are more spread.The horn feels and sounds more like a modernized version of the classic American Conn horns than the other horns I mentioned.The sound tends to be less "centered" and a bit darker.

Fit and finish tends to be a bit better than Selmer.Every Selmer horn I've owned required significant reworking by a technician to get it to work right.On the other hand the Yamahas and Yanagisawas have tended to be made as if by a precision jeweler.The Keilwerth is more solid than the Selmer, but not to the level of the Japanese horns.

If you like the sound and feel of the classic American horns, you'll probably like the Keilwerth sound and feel.Keilwerths are somewhat popular with modern "smooth jazz" players, and if that is your style of music, or if you are primarily a small combo player the Keilwerth can be a very good choice.

If you are looking for a horn for a college student, or a high school student looking to move up to a professional horn, I would not recommend the Keilwerth.A student playing in ensembles with other saxophones will be better served by a horn that blends more like the others.Many college music professors prefer that their students arrive with either a Selmer or Yamaha (I don't think either is inherently "better" than the Keilwerth but that's how it is).

Nothing wrong with this Keilwerth. It's a great horn, and I think a good player could use it for anything.Every horn design has its quirks and tradeoffs.I do think that the Yamaha 82Z offers better value for the price, but it does not offer the distinctive sound of the Keilwerth.If the Keilwerth sound is what you crave, then the straight tone hole model sold here, is the best value.

Solid Musical Value
I bought a SX90 Nickel-plated Alto from SaxForte. Their price was cheaper than Woodwind and Brasswind where I have also bought instruments. There were no unpleasant experiences in the WW/BWor SaxForte transactions, I should add.

These are my impressions: The Keilwerth has a solid sound, but it is less resonant than the Selmer serie ii I own and play on. I feel the sound of the Keilwerth is purer. Right now I am searching for a proper mouthpiece fit, because my Otto Link does not sound good in a Keilwerth neck.

The key mechanism is very solid and smooth. The lowest notes are much easier to sound than on my Selmer. Although the Selmer has more heft, I find the Keilwerth to be much more carefully put together and stronger. The general finish of the sax is a marvel. Screws, springs, posts, etc are perfectly fitted.

I give the Keilwerth 5 stars. However try it out for sure, because the tonal quality is quite different from the Selmer [and a Yanigasawa I have owned and played].

One last caveat: The case that came with the Keilwerth is excellent, but some folks like to use more form-shaped cases. The Keilwerth will not fit many standard cases because its horn end is longer overall than the Selmer and other major brands. ... Read more
