Product Description

The Fostex MR-8 is more than just another digital multitrack recorder. It?s the world's first digital multi-track to use CompactFlash memory cards. But those clever guys at Fostex, have predictably gone a little further by making the MR-8 the easiest to use digital multitrack ever. If you can operate a tape recorder, you?ll be recording and multitracking within minutes of opening the box. By putting all the major controls and functions right there on the top panel instead of buried in a confusing menu system, the MR-8, unlike some other recorders, actually aids you in capturing your musical ideas. In addition there?s great sounding built-in digital effects, guitar amp and mic simulators, handy mix-down effects, plus the ability to hook up to a PC for data editing, CD-burning and backing up your songs. 3-0 out of 5 stars A very BASIC recorder...
I picked this up hoping for more than it offers. Here are some....

pros:
Low cost for a digital recorder
Card based memory system
Easy to use
USB interface

cons:
Horrible sounding amp simulator
Horrible effects
No tone control
No solo/mute buttons

I may a bit hard on the product in regards to some of the cons as the majority of my experience is actually with a 24 track Analog system and various midi recording devices (hardware and software). It's great as a sketchpad but for anything more, it falls a bit short.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity and clarity - perfection no doubt.
I'm an independent artist publishing under the name "Alpha Terminus" and "Dancing Baptists."The genre is electronic/synthpop/new wave.I tried recording vocals on the computer soundcard and a mic and it was in essence, horrible. On someones advice I bought the Fostex MR-8 and a good mic (Sure SM58) and it was remarkable.
Simple to use, I never read the manual.I don't use any of the effects as I'm just using it for vocals.Any professional could use this to get identical "big studio sound."But the incredibly cheap price is great for amatures.
The CF format is cheap. You can easily add a 1 Gbyte card for under 100 dollars and have hours of recording time.
Transfer it to your computer, enhance it, edit it, and you can have studio quality perfection. The best and most important equipment I use (But get a good mic too!)

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start
The Fostex MR-8 has it's ups and downs, luckily it has more ups than downs. What the greatest perks of the MR-8 is that it's one of the cheapest digital recorders around and doesn't feel cheap. For just three hundred dollars you get a digital recorder, and the fact that it is a digital recorder offers enough flexibility to get around it's shortcomings.
The MR-8 records onto a Smart Card reader. It has a couple of onboard effect options and mastering effects. The recorder has a simple menu screen to work from and it's also backlit so it's easy to see.You have eight tracks to work from and the first four of these you are allowed to add effects from the actual MR-8.This isn't necessary if you already have an effects pedal, but it's a nice thought. It's very easy to record onto this thing and within minutes after scanning the manual I was able to start recording.Within a day of reading the manual I was able to almost fully use every function on the MR-8.The MR-8 also allows you to bounce tracks one though four onto tracks five and six and then you can bounce tracks one through six onto tracks seven and eight, you can than master these two tracks into a wav file so your completed song can be exported onto your computer. This is the MR-8's strongest feature, the ability to transfer tracks and songs back and forth from the computer. It makes the fact that the Smart Card has only a little amount of memory easier to digest. If you use a USB cable to transfer songs you might run into some problems, as I did.Every now and then, about one in every twenty transfers, a file would become corrupted and unusable. But I just bought a Smart Card reader and use that now to transfer songs and I have yet to have a problem.
I have found after having this product for over a year, it best works as a recording device instead of a recording/mastering device. If you just use the product to record and than a computer to handle the mixing and mastering you will soon discover you have a powerful combination in your hands. For it's price it is a nice place to start a budding recording carrier. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing, No Moving Parts
How many years have we all been waiting for this?

This recording device is a little bit larger than your hand and is designed to record sound onto compact flash memory cards (up to 2GB--the included card is 64MB). It can use a number of MP3 formats as well as uncompressed WAV files up to 24-bit. No driver disk included--you just plug in the USB cable to your computer. Your Windows or Mac OS should simply detect this unit and make it appear like a drive, just like a digital camera. This device has built in stereo microphones that are near professional quality.

What an amazing set of features in the guts of this unfortunately cheaply built "plasticy" device. Dropping this unit seems like it would be a tragedy--plastic knobs and casing seem quite flimsy.

This recording device operates silently since there is no tape mechanism or internal moving parts of any kind (solid state!). It can use 2 AA batteries or the included power supply. Dynamic or plug-in-power condenser type microphones can be used instead of the unit's built-in ones. Input level is controlled via a knob and level monitoring occurs on the display of the unit. All audio jacks are 1/8" stereo mini: Mic, Line In, and Phones/Optical Out. The unit does not have digital input, only output. The unit sports some effects, a metronome, and a tuner. The 20 x 2 character display is conservative but effective, and has a controllable backlight.

Although playback features are somewhat limited, this first generation recorder is currently a one-of-a-kind in terms of size and quality. Future generations are sure to have greater capacity and smaller size, hopefully as good audio quality as this unit, and hopefully heavy duty metal casing! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too complicated and the manual is poorly written
I purchased this machine almost 2 months ago and it sits on the shelf, gathering dust, because I cannot figure out how to burn a CD. A simple task, it would seem, with all of the plug and play technology around. This machine is all in one which makes the $599.00 dollar loss even more painful. The manual is disjointed, the english hard to understand. Unbelievable that I wasted my time and money on this product which just reinforces the problems with products not made in America. I cannot find any help on the internet, on forums and have spoken with other Fostex multitrack recorders who get stuck when it comes to burning a frigin CD. I wrote the company from the website; no answer, no response. I say, do research on the web, find an easy to use product and go with that. Check out the manuals online before purchasing a digital recorder. The flow and usefulness of the manual will probably follow the ease of use of the machine. I am so angry I can't write anymore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Sound
This little gadget really suprises you. Its packed with features you can actually use. Just bring in a midi file as a backing track and you can easily add two guitars and two vocals in no time. You can bounce tracks if you need more, with no loss of quality whatsoever. The sound effects alone make this recorder worth the price. The "90's Rock" effect sounds like a little Marshall Stack in there. I was also amazed at the MP3 Mixdown quality. With no tweaking at all, the result sounds professional. Transferring to a computer was also a breeze. I will admit there was a little bit of a learning curve to get use to its setup but once you get past that, recording on it becomes second nature. ... Product Description

The MX-2424 is a 24-track, 24-bit hard disk recorder, created by TASCAM and TimeLine. It offers 50 minutes of recording across all 24 tracks. Recording time can be extended by adding more drives. During the planning of this box, TASCAM and TimeLine both did great amounts of field research, asking end users of all levels what they wanted. Now that all the design elements have fallen into place, what we have is a machine that reacts instantly like an analog deck, has the editing power of a digital audio workstation, sounds like a million bucks, but is still affordable. The MX-2424 ships with a 9 gigabyte internal drive, which equates to roughly 45 minutes of record time across all 24 tracks. If that's not enough, you can slave more drives off the SCSI Wide port on the back panel, or build a drive into the front panel standard drive bay. The front panel can also be used to install an approved DVD-RAM drive for back-up, using increasingly affordable DVD-RAM media. The MX-2424 can provide 24 tracks of recording at up to 48kHz, or it can be switched into a 12 track 88.2kHz or 96kHz recorder, recording 96KHz audio on inputs 1-12, the choice is yours. The analog I/O option has 96kHz converters built in, so you really can record 24 bit, 96kHz audio right from the machine. No "simulated resolution." No "interpolation" or compression. No kidding. The MX-2424 can record all 24 tracks simult... ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Designed from the ground up as an ideal CD player for broadcast applications, the Marantz PMD331 is built to near-industrial strength and loaded with features such as instant start, fader start, programmable cue point memory, CD Text, frame and index search, CD-RW playback, digital pitch control, balanced digital and analog outputs, 10 seconds antishock protection, and a jog wheel, all to give you the operating speed and tracking assurance you need.

Combining a full assortment of professional build and operational features with Marantz's renowned audiophile performance standards, the PMD331 is perfect for DJ/sound installation, recording studios, post production, broadcast production, and on-air use. Extensive listening and comparison tests throughout its development enabled the company's designers to achieve an uncommonly high level of sonic performance.

The buffer memory that provides the unit's antiskip protection also allows the player to commence playback instantly from RAM, compensating for the conventional 300 ms CD playback delay. If you need a delay, you can still program a precise amount of delay in the preset menu. The buffer also improves tracking and reduces the playback risks posed by scratches or dirt, since the laser pickup can make multiple attempts to retrieve and correct hard-to-read data.

You can easily search for an exact start point with single-frame accuracy (1/75s), and you can store this point in cue-point memory. To return to the cue point from any point on the CD, just press the cue button. The cue point memory is independent from the autocue operation that searches for the beginning of the audio signal on a track; using autocue after selecting another track does not reset the cue point memory.

The PMD331 achieves its pitch control via a heavy duty, infinite-rotary encoder, which allows rapid and extremely accurate adjustments. The lifetime expectancy of a digital rotary encoder greatly exceeds that of conventional mechanical slide faders. The pitch-control range is +/- 12 percent, with an accuracy of 0.1 percent. The digital pitch control is also available from the remote control ports on the back panel (an infrared wireless remote is not included).

A pitch-bend function temporarily accelerates or decelerates the playback speed for beat mixing between 2 CD players. The quick-reaction servo system makes this easier than ever. Select and combine from 4 base playback modes: single track play, random repeat, repeat play, or program play. these base modes can be set to function automatically from power up to allow maximum flexibility in timer situations.

An RC5 in/output provides external remote control. The IR receiver on the front outputs RC5 codes at the rear and can be used as a receiver for a complete RC5 system. You can also disable the receiver via a back-panel switch to avoid interference with other IR-controlled devices.

The unit offers a complement of balanced XLR analog and digital-audio outputs, an optical digital output, and a GPI port for easy hookup with standard mixing desks. The balanced analog outs feature automatic gain compensation in case one of the balanced terminals is grounded by external wiring, and the output levels are adjustable over a wide range.

The unit's robust loading-tray assembly is optimized to perform quickly and smoothly for the life of the player with a special bracket to keep discs from jamming when the player is not horizontal.

The main transport buttons are positionally optimized for high-speed access and to prevent operator errors. The main buttons are based on a combination of a hard-touch surface over a durable silicon base mat, offering both durability and a good feel. The cue, play/pause, and pitch buttons are backlit to indicate status. Further, a backlit LCD offers great visibility in all lighting, with no reduction in contrast over its lifetime. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars can't handle burned cds, bad scratch protection
I work at a college radio station, and we just ordered a pair of these cd players to replace some denons. to be succinct: they suck. they cannot handle burned cds at all, and they'll skip at the slightest scratch. My ten buck discman has better compatability than this POS. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. ... Read more
