Good sound; great simplicity, flexibility, and price
I'm a vocalist, and I wanted the ability to produce good quality recordings quickly (i.e. on the spot/during rehearsal) and inexpensively.I recently purchased the Portastudio 414mkII to meet this need, and I'm quite please with its performance to date.For clarity, this is not my demo quality set up.I use an Edirol audio interface and Cakewalk recording software for that purpose.This latter solution works quite well, but is rather cumbersome to set up and carry through to mastering.

I chose the Portastudio 414mkII over similarly priced alternatives because it seemed to present the best combination of price and features.I looked at the more affordable Porta02mkII and MF-P01 by Tascam, but these units lack XLR inputs, EQ controls, and effects send capability.The X-12 by Fostex was similarly oversimplified, in my opinion.I also considered the pricier Pocketstudio 5 and Fostex MR-8 (both digital units), but ultimately rejected these because their interfaces seemed more complicated than necessary for a rehearsal quality unit.The 414mkII's solid array of inputs and outputs also seemed superior to those on these digital units.I did not consider digital multi-tracks with built in CD burners during this purchase.In my mind, units with those capabilities (and price) compete directly with my Edirol/Cakewalk set up.

As I indicate above, I'm quite pleased with the Portastudio 414mkII's performance.Setup was a breeze, the controls are intuitive, and the manual provides excellent guidance on more complicated features.Recording is basically as simple as turning the unit on, taking a few sample levels, and pushing record.Mixing and mastering are similarly simple processes, and I've found myself recording, mixing, and mastering piano/vocal arrangements in roughly 30 minutes.

Most importantly, the sound quality is incredibly good given this unit's price and ease of operation.I've recorded acoustic piano, electronic piano, and voice thus far, and the resulting mix is truly a pleasure to listen to; in fact, it far surpasses my expectations for a unit priced so reasonably.My only negative feedback is that these initial recordings yielded a barely audible hiss when played back through my home stereo at high volume.Please understand, however, that when I say barely audible, I mean it; normal listeners (non audiophiles) will likely not notice the noise at all.I'm now playing with input and recording levels to try and eliminate even that noise.But regardless of success, I'll remain pleased with the sound quality this reasonably priced unit delivers.

The buffer memory that provides the unit's antiskip protection also allows the player to commence playback instantly from RAM, compensating for the conventional 300 ms CD playback delay. If you need a delay, you can still program a precise amount of delay in the preset menu. The buffer also improves tracking and reduces the playback risks posed by scratches or dirt, since the laser pickup can make multiple attempts to retrieve and correct hard-to-read data.

You can easily search for an exact start point with single-frame accuracy (1/75s), and you can store this point in cue-point memory. To return to the cue point from any point on the CD, just press the cue button. The cue point memory is independent from the autocue operation that searches for the beginning of the audio signal on a track; using autocue after selecting another track does not reset the cue point memory.

The PMD331 achieves its pitch control via a heavy duty, infinite-rotary encoder, which allows rapid and extremely accurate adjustments. The lifetime expectancy of a digital rotary encoder greatly exceeds that of conventional mechanical slide faders. The pitch-control range is +/- 12 percent, with an accuracy of 0.1 percent. The digital pitch control is also available from the remote control ports on the back panel (an infrared wireless remote is not included).

A pitch-bend function temporarily accelerates or decelerates the playback speed for beat mixing between 2 CD players. The quick-reaction servo system makes this easier than ever. Select and combine from 4 base playback modes: single track play, random repeat, repeat play, or program play. these base modes can be set to function automatically from power up to allow maximum flexibility in timer situations.

An RC5 in/output provides external remote control. The IR receiver on the front outputs RC5 codes at the rear and can be used as a receiver for a complete RC5 system. You can also disable the receiver via a back-panel switch to avoid interference with other IR-controlled devices.

The unit offers a complement of balanced XLR analog and digital-audio outputs, an optical digital output, and a GPI port for easy hookup with standard mixing desks. The balanced analog outs feature automatic gain compensation in case one of the balanced terminals is grounded by external wiring, and the output levels are adjustable over a wide range.

The unit's robust loading-tray assembly is optimized to perform quickly and smoothly for the life of the player with a special bracket to keep discs from jamming when the player is not horizontal.
