    The Fostex MR-8 is more than just another digital multitrack recorder. It?s the world's first digital multi-track to use CompactFlash memory cards. But those clever guys at Fostex, have predictably gone a little further by making the MR-8 the easiest to use digital multitrack ever. If you can operate a tape recorder, you?ll be recording and multitracking within minutes of opening the box. • MR-8 8-track Memory Recorder w/128meg Card

    Reviews (3)

    3-0 out of 5 stars A very BASIC recorder...
    I picked this up hoping for more than it offers.Here are some....

    pros:
    Low cost for a digital recorder
    Card based memory system
    Easy to use
    USB interface

    cons:
    Horrible sounding amp simulator
    Horrible effects
    No tone control
    No solo/mute buttons

    I may a bit hard on the product in regards to some of the cons as the majority of my experience is actually with a 24 track Analog system and various midi recording devices (hardware and software).It's great as a sketchpad but for anything more, it falls a bit short.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity and clarity - perfection no doubt.
    I'm an independent artist publishing under the name "Alpha Terminus" and "Dancing Baptists."The genre is electronic/synthpop/new wave.I tried recording vocals on the computer soundcard and a mic and it was in essence, horrible.On someones advice I bought the Fostex MR-8 and a good mic (Sure SM58) and it was remarkable.
    Simple to use, I never read the manual.I don't use any of the effects as I'm just using it for vocals.Any professional could use this to get identical "big studio sound."But the incredibly cheap price is great for amatures.
    The CF format is cheap.You can easily add a 1 Gbyte card for under 100 dollars and have hours of recording time.
    Transfer it to your computer, enhance it, edit it, and you can have studio quality perfection.The best and most important equipment I use (But get a good mic too!)

    4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start
    The Fostex MR-8 has it's ups and downs, luckily it has more ups than downs.What the greatest perks of the MR-8 is that it's one of the cheapest digital recorders around and doesn't feel cheap.For just three hundred dollars you get a digital recorder, and the fact that it is a digital recorder offers enough flexibility to get around it's shortcomings.
    The MR-8 records onto a Smart Card reader.It has a couple of onboard effect options and mastering effects.The recorder has a simple menu screen to work from and it's also backlit so it's easy to see.You have eight tracks to work from and the first four of these you are allowed to add effects from the actual MR-8.This isn't necessary if you already have an effects pedal, but it's a nice thought.It's very easy to record onto this thing and within minutes after scanning the manual I was able to start recording.Within a day of reading the manual I was able to almost fully use every function on the MR-8.The MR-8 also allows you to bounce tracks one though four onto tracks five and six and then you can bounce tracks one through six onto tracks seven and eight, you can than master these two tracks into a wav file so your completed song can be exported onto your computer.This is the MR-8's strongest feature, the ability to transfer tracks and songs back and forth from the computer.It makes the fact that the Smart Card has only a little amount of memory easier to digest.If you use a USB cable to transfer songs you might run into some problems, as I did.Every now and then, about one in every twenty transfers, a file would become corrupted and unusable.But I just bought a Smart Card reader and use that now to transfer songs and I have yet to have a problem.
    I have found after having this product for over a year, it best works as a recording device instead of a recording/mastering device.If you just use the product to record and than a computer to handle the mixing and mastering you will soon discover you have a powerful combination in your hands.For it's price it is a nice place to start a budding recording carrier. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing, No Moving Parts
    How many years have we all been waiting for this?

    This recording device is a little bit larger than your hand and is designed to record sound onto compact flash memory cards (up to 2GB--the included card is 64MB). It can use a number of MP3 formats as well as uncompressed WAV files up to 24-bit. No driver disk included--you just plug in the USB cable to your computer. Your Windows or Mac OS should simply detect this unit and make it appear like a drive, just like a digital camera. This device has built in stereo microphones that are near professional quality.

    What an amazing set of features in the guts of this unfortunately cheaply built "plasticy" device. Dropping this unit seems like it would be a tragedy--plastic knobs and casing seem quite flimsy.

    This recording device operates silently since there is no tape mechanism or internal moving parts of any kind (solid state!). It can use 2 AA batteries or the included power supply. Dynamic or plug-in-power condenser type microphones can be used instead of the unit's built-in ones. Input level is controlled via a knob and level monitoring occurs on the display of the unit.All audio jacks are 1/8" stereo mini: Mic, Line In, and Phones/Optical Out. The unit does not have digital input, only output. The unit sports some effects, a metronome, and a tuner. The 20 x 2 character display is conservative but effective, and has a controllable backlight.

    Although playback features are somewhat limited, this first generation recorder is currently a one-of-a-kind in terms of size and quality. Future generations are sure to have greater capacity and smaller size, hopefully as good audio quality as this unit, and hopefully heavy duty metal casing! ... Read more

    2-0 out of 5 stars Beware if you have widows 98
    When I opened the package I noticed that there was a notice that you needed to download a driver for windows 98. When I went to the site, the title was for a driver for windows 98se. I tried to download but was unsuccessful so I can't tell you if the driver works for windows 98 or 98se. Also note that the item comes with no instructions other than the notice about the driver.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Died on me after a couple of months
    This deviced worked great until yesterday.Which for no apparent reason it stopped working.I tried it in 5 computers (Windows XP/Windows 2000) with no luck.Its dead, now I lost all my data.I don't recommend it.

    5-0 out of 5 stars just a nice piece of hardware
    I have had my pen drive for about a month now and have had no problems. Once it was almost too big to get to a USB port, but the included 5 ft extension cord solved the problem. I have read that USB 2.0 pens work slower on computers with USB 1.1 than older pens, but I have computers each with 1.1 and 2.0, and I see no difference in transfer speed (happens in the blink of an eye on both).One problem I did notice is that it would not work on powered or unpowered hubs, it must be plugged directly into the computer. I am an engineering student; I use this drive almost everyday, pen drives are definitely worth the money.

    UPDATE: Almost a year later, this drive still works fine. It has saved me quite a few trips back to my apartment to get a floppy disk or blank cd. If you are in college in any major where you use computers (should be about anything) then you should definitely buy a drive like this. This brand can also take the abuse of being on my regular keychain 24/7.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A little too big
    The USB Pen device works perfect. So far it has worked on all systems that I have plugged it into. The only minor problem is the size of the Pen device, it's a bit too big for some USB connections.

    5-0 out of 5 stars 9 Stars SUPER-COOL
    This is a very dependable device. I have over 1 year of use on it and still have 2 files in perfect condition from my first use.I have loaded this baby with everything - pictures, mp3's, word documents for school, work, spreadsheets, presentations and even Software patches for distribution on isolated network machines.It is incredibly dependable, has never lost any data needs no batteries and works with any machine that has a USB port using Plug and Play. It has taken moderate physical abuse without failure. It is super simple to install and use, exactly like another hard drive in operation, but has not internal moving parts to wear out. It is light as a feather about 1/2" thick and hangs around my neck with the convenient lanyard.I recommend the CD-Cyclone, the designers did a fine job. ... Read more

As a result it took me a loooong time to figure out, but when I did, it was worth it!Thank you Fostex, probably the best digital multitracker on the market! ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars Too complicated and the manual is poorly written
    I purchased this machine almost 2 months ago and it sits on the shelf, gathering dust, because I cannot figure out how to burn a CD. A simple task, it would seem, with all of the plug and play technology around. This machine is all in one which makes the $599.00 dollar loss even more painful. The manual is disjointed, the english hard to understand. Unbelievable that I wasted my time and money on this product which just reinforces the problems with products not made in America. I cannot find any help on the internet, on forums and have spoken with other Fostex multitrack recorders who get stuck when it comes to burning a frigin CD. I wrote the company from the website; no answer, no response. I say, do research on the web, find an easy to use product and go with that. Check out the manuals online before purchasing a digital recorder. The flow and usefulness of the manual will probably follow the ease of use of the machine. I am so angry I can't write anymore. ... 12. Tascam CC-222 Professional Cassette and CD Recorder
    by Tascam

    (price subject to change: see help)
    Asin: B00006I5V5
    Catlog: CE
    Manufacturer: Tascam
    Sales Rank: 23232
    Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan

    Amazon.com Product Description

    Designed for audio engineers, musicians, and others interested in recording CDs from sources such as vinyl LPs and cassettes, Tascam's CC-222 combines a professional-quality stereo cassette deck with a CD-RW drive in a single rackmountable component. The CC-222 is completely self-contained, requiring no computer or other peripheral device to operate. What's more, the CC-222 is compatible with both data and music (or "digital-audio") branded CD-R and CD-RW discs, freeing you to use whatever media is most suitable for your purposes.

    You can connect your turntable's output directly with the CC-222's grounded RIAA phono input, which lets you burn high-quality CDs from your favorite records with ease. (The inputs are designed for use with moving-magnet cartridges.) The unit's other inputs and outputs consist of 2 each stereo analog (left/right) RCA analog inputs and outputs and 1 each coaxial and optical stereo digital-audio input and output. One line output is CD only, the other is CD and cassette (cassette sound will take priority if both units are playing).

    Features include internal dubbing from cassette to CD and CD to cassette, bidirectional cassette playback (select single-side play, both-sides play, or continuous play), pitch control (+/- 12 percent, cassette only), Dolby B noise reduction (on/off), and continual/repeat playback of both CD and cassette, which will commence playback in one medium as soon as the other has stopped. You can swap tapes and discs during the other format's playback, resulting in hours of uninterrupted listening.

    The CD recorder may be set to commence recording when it senses an input signal from an external audio component. You can sample-rate convert from, say, a 48 kHz DAT to the 44.1 kHz CD standard, adjust the input level in both the analog and digital domains, create additional track IDs while you're copying to CD, or bypass the sample-rate converter and the input level to create a 1:1 copy of a digital source (must be 44.1 kHz). Other CD features include random play, track programming, and repeat play (1/all/A-B looping).

    4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a solution for music fans with a pile of cassettes!
    Eversince my 60 GB iPod photo gave me the power of carrying a great part of my music collection anywhere I go, I was getting more greedy and looking for an easy mechanism to digitize my 1000+ cassette collection.I am quite happy that my search has reached an important milestone with TASCAM CC-222MKII (referred to as CC-222 henceforth).

    CC-222 is presently the only equipment that converts music from tape to CD directly.Since it has autoreverse tape deck and an automatic track creation feature, a large number of cassettes can be converted with minimum effort.

    CC-222 has many other recording features but I focus entirely on the tape-to-CD aspect in this review.You can download the user manual and technical specs from the company website: www.tascam.com

    Good points:
    + Easy to operate; the user manual is concise but covers all aspects clearly
    + Has a helpful remote control
    + High quality conversion from tape to CD; has DOLBY NR;
    + Automatically recognizes the gap between songs in the tape and makes multiple tracks in the CD
    + Also has a manual mode in which it leaves the track marking to the user - this could be useful for converting cassette that contain something other than standard music songs
    + High quality display that is very informative
    + Lot of recording options that are easy to customize
    + Entire cassette can be converted with the push of a single button (auto-reverse)
    + Music converted to digital format is stored in its internal buffer (I guess hard disc) that doesn't go away even if you switch off the unit by mistake
    + Supports all CD-R/CD-RW discs with capacities ranging from 650 MB to 800 MB
    + Music from more than one cassette could be recorded on a CD-R to fill up all the available space on the CD [multiple recording steps]
    + For a CD-RW, it is possible to just erase the table of contents and record more tracks in case there is space
    + Selected tracks can be erased from a CD-RW; also, we can erase the entire disk at once with ERASE DISC or REFRESH DISC option
    + Writes CDs in AIFF format that is supported by most CD players, as well as iTunes/iPod

    Bad points:
    - Insufficient documentation about technical details
    - Though not indicated in the documentation, CC-222 can only record a maximum of 76 minutes at a time (so, you can't convert a 90 minutes tape into a 90-minute CD in one shot).This was a BIG disappointment for me.
    - It is good in recognizing the beginning of a song, but not the end of it -for example, the last track in your cassette might result in a track that has a long silence at the end of it
    - Doesn't have an optical sensor for the cassette player (like some other TASCAM players).An optical sensor would have reduced the time to change the sides as well as prevent the possibility of tape getting ripped off while being rowound or forwarded)
    - Support staff not very helpful

    If you are importing the CDs digitized through CC-222 into iTunes, it is better to turn off the "On CD Insert Import & Eject" feature so that you could choose the tracks to be imported.There are cases where the long silences between songs or at the beginning/end of the tape become tracks in the CD. Also, there may be cases where the silence that was part of a song results in the song getting broken into multiple tracks.In such cases, "Join CD Tracks" in iTunes becomes very handy.I wish iTunes also had a way to split tracks and join non-adjacent tracks as well.

    CC-222 also has the following features which I didn't experiment with:
    * Recording from CD to tape
    * SYNC recording to record live audio directly into CD or tape
    * OPTICAL input
    * PHONO input for turn-table
    * RCA output for speaker
    * Miniplug output for headphone

    Overall, I am very pleased with CC-222 and would highly recommend it to music fans who are willing to generously spend for converting their cassettes into CD. ... Read more
