This assures Pro-Mark of priority delivery, and guarantees an uninterrupted year-round supply of wood. Promark's Millenium II? process is a proprietary system which is unique to the drumstick industry. This treatment actually strengthens the wood and improves its resonance. It reduces the chance of warping during production, shipment and storage at retail stores or distribution warehouses. Promark is now using an environmentally friendly finish as opposed to the ordinary lacquer used by most other manufacturers. This finish is completely non-toxic, with no waste or residue, which is hazardous and difficult to dispose of. It makes Pro-Mark sticks less sensitive to moisture changes than standard drumsticks. The result is significantly improved quality and consistency as well as a finish that is more comfortable to the touch. ... Read more

Double butt end with slight, gradual taper over the full length. Used for power.  Hickory is the most popular wood used for making drumsticks. Hickory is denser, heavier and more rigid than maple. Hickory can also absorb a great amount of shock, which reduces hand and wrist fatigue. Dark, or "brown hickory", is found closer to the trees center and is slightly denser and heavier than "white hickory". Each stick is crafted with impeccable consistency to give you a quality stick, guaranteed straight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sticks!!
I wasn't expecting much from these sticks... I mean, c'mon, no tip? How good could it sound? Well, the answer is AMAZING! Granted, it's not as precise a sound on a ride cymbal, but it's a huge sound, especially on my Ping ride.

Yes, these sticks are loud, compared to tipped sticks, and the tone you get is much more concentrated in the fundamental pitch, rather than the overtones (that can be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending on what you're looking for). I've found, however, that I have to work a lot less at playing at higher volumes - I can lighten up on my technique and still get a full tone and plenty of volume to cut through an amplified band.

The feel is something different, as well. Since there's no taper in the shoulder, the balance point is at exactly the midpoint of the stick. I had some trouble with double strokes and rolls at first, until I learned to choke up a bit more. What's nice is that I can dramatically change the feel (and tone/volume) just by changing my grip location; choke up for lighter and more precise work, slide back to really lay into it. I found the difference to be much more than with any tipped sticks I've tried.

One other note: I don't these sticks will ever break. I play pretty roughly in one band, and there are nicks galore in the last quarter of the stick, but since there's no taper, there's no weak point! If you want economy, these will redefine it for you.

These are definitely rock sticks, or for any high engergy/high volume music. One of the bands I play in covers a lot of stylistic ground, and I've found while I *can* use the Hammers for anything, some styles (especially more jazz/funk oriented) do come out better with a lighter, tipped stick. I've got to say though, right now the Vater Hammer is my absolute favorite stick!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for any brush work
I've tried this and the companion model, Vic Firth Jazz Brush ASIN B0002F53G4, and prefer this one.

The reasons I like this Heritage model is the lighter gage wires and the way the brush feels in my hand. It's lightweight, has a nice balance and produces the exact sound that I am trying for.The Jazz model I mentioned would be my second choice because it has the same balance, but the heavier gage wires do not appeal to me, especially when I do accents.

Choosing the right brush is a matter of personal preference.Regardless of which brush you ultimately choose or your level of skill with them (brush work is becoming a lost art), I highly recommend getting a copy of Essence of Brushes (ASIN B0002VEPN0).This DVD is an instructional movie by Ed Thigpen (cited by both Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa as the best brush man in the world). ...
