Essential for double bass pedal players
This is an ingenious clutch that engages when you step on your hi-hat pedal, but will drop to the closed position when you hit the lever on the top. This allows you to either ride closed hi-hats when using both bass pedals, yet return to normal hi-hat playing when the music calls for it.

Be aware that this clutch has only two positions - open and fully closed. However, there is a way to work around this if you like partially open hi-hats in the closed position for a sizzle sound.I did a work around by placing a spring on the hi-hat stem, with metal and felt washers on the top of the spring, which gives me that opening when I drop the cymbal to closed.There was a lot of trial and error finding the right spring because each cymbal pair has a different height when mated together, and I was looking for a tiny fraction of an inch opening.Too small or low a tension a spring and stickwork chokes the sound. Too large or stiff and you will not get the sound.However, this is all personal preference, and many drummers ride a fully closed hi-hat anyway, which makes this clutch perfect out of the box.

Clumsy to use
I am always changing heads on my drum kits and purchased this speed key to make the task easier.However, it isn't as easy as the design would lead one to believe.

The problem is the crank part of this key does not extend far enough horizontally, and the shank is too short to hold upright.This results in the key going to a natural angle when you are spinning it, which slows you down at best, and could damage your lugs at worse.

I recommend, instead, using the Evans Drum Key Pack (ASIN B0002M3BKC), which includes a magnetized drum key in regular "T" configuration, and a drill bit drum key that will make short work of spinning the lugs. Also be aware that if you do opt for the Evans solution I recommend, make sure you have a low-torque drill.

When it comes to drum lugs less is better because you only want to spin them hand tight and finish with a traditional key or a tuning key.The drill I recommend is the Campbell Hausfeld DG110400CD Mini Compact Drill with Keyless Chuck (ASIN DG110400CD).This is a compact and inexpensive drill that does not have much power or torque.Finally, I recommend final tuning with either a Rhythm Tech Memo Key (ASIN B0002E2EOE), or an EvansTorque tuning key (ASIN B0002D0HZI).Either of those will allow you to quickly get your heads in perfect tuning once you have done an initial tuning and have written down the settings. ... Excellent way to prolong bass head life
I am not a loud player since I do mostly jazz and acoustic sets, but my primary drum kits (a Tama Stagestar and Groove Percussion Travel Kit) come with smaller bass drums that require me to use tom tom heads.The Stagestar's 18" head does not present the main problem, but the Groove Percussion kit with its 16" bass drum requires that I use tom tom heads.To protect the heads on both kits and prolong their life I use these EQ patches (the single for the Groove Percussion kit, and double for the Tama).

One of the best things about this patch is it does not change the sound or tone at all.After going through fits getting the Groove Percussion kit's bass drum tuned I appreciate the fact that sound dynamics remain the same before and after the patch is applied.More importantly, I have confidence that my bass drum heads will not need replacing due to wear for quite some time because these patches absorb all of the wear and tear. ... I tried every tuning trick in the book attempting to get the 16x16 bass that came with my Groove Percussion Travel Kit (ASIN B0006JKC3U) to sound right.

Square bass drums (same diameter and depth) are notoriously difficult to tune, and no matter which tension setting I used, or what I stuffed inside to dampen the ring and overtones without choking the warmth I was seeking, I just cound not get there until I purchased this ingenious pad.

Makes a dramatic difference
I never suspected just how much a well designed beater can contribute to bass drum pedal performance.I added a pair of these to my DP402 double bass pedal (ASIN B0002D0BRM) and simply could not believe the added speed and control I attained.

In fact, after hours of adjusting and tweaking the pedal I thought I had it perfect.Adding these beaters pushed the performance envelop so much that I next tried one of my beaters on a roughly adjusted Groove Percussion DP200 pedal (ASIN B0002X0802).Same amazing transformation.This beater (or a pair if you are using double pedals) is worth every penny.
