Great tuning tool - essential for good sound
I generally use the Rhythm Tech Memo Key (ASIN B0002E2EOE) to tune my heads, but this one is as good and has a feature I like more than the Rhythm Tech model - this tuning key clicks and disengages when the dialed-in torque is attained whereas the Rhythm Tech model requires you to reset a lever.

It is simple to use.All you do is hand tighten your lugs, set the dial on the key to an initial setting, then go around your drum in the standard opposing tightening pattern.Test, and increase the dial setting until you get the sound you want. Once you do achieve the sound I strongly recommend that you write the settings down so you can quickly dial in your preferred tuning the next time you tune your drums or change heads.

A few things to consider: tuning involves more than just the batter side heads, which is especially true in the case of snare drums.Unless you are seeking a flat sound, do not tune the resonant heads to the same torque as the batter side heads, else the heads will cancel each other out because they will be vibrating at the same frequency.Also, make sure your lugs are lightly oiled so that each has uniform resistance or the torque settings will be inaccurate. Finally, if you cannot get the sound you are looking for between setting increments (i.e., between dial setting #3 and #4), use a standard key and try one eigth turn increments.

This pedal is a great buy for the quality and features it offers.It has a base-plate for stability,a horizontal frame brace below the rocker shaft for strength,an easy-access hoop clamp wing nut and a double chain drive.The footboard has no toe-stop,but this is actually better because most toe-stops are seldom in a good place and usually non-adjustable and non-removable.As for build quality,its good,even the hinge between the footboard and heel plate doesnt have much side-to-side play which is great.The heel plate and footboard are made of good quality cast aluminum comparable to most pedals of other brands.For a third-party chinese-built pedal the overall quality is quite good.An awesome value for $30.00 ... Excellent pedal - can compete with brand names
I received this pedal with my Groove Percussion Travel Kit (ASIN B0006JKC3U), expecting to replace it with something better.Much to my surprise and delight, when I unpacked the drum kit and came to the pedal I was impressed.Among the features that make this a 'serious' pedal are:

- Heavy-duty spring assembly with large, high-quality tension adjustment and locking nuts.This alone is far superior to the Tama pedal that came with my Tama Stagestar kit.

- Cams and throw can be adjusted with a drum key. Every other pedal I've owned required an Allen wrench for most fine adjustments.Face it, we always have a drum key handy (I even carry one on my car/house key chain), but rarely is an Allen wrench nearby when you need one.

- Rock plate.Again, this feature isn't present on my Tama single pedal, nor on the primary pedal of my DW Pacific dual pedals, and is a nice touch that shows the attention to detail that went into designing this pedal to professional standards.

The assembly is a single chain drive with offset cam, split footplate, and excellent bearings.The beater that comes with this pedal is dual sided, with a slightly convex felt head and the same shape plastic head that lets you select the right beater head for the type of music you play.I use the felt head since I play jazz, but I can assure you that the plastic side can produce a loud thump that will satisify any rock drummer.

Excellent performance and value
Although my favorite beater is the Slug Percussion Power Head Jazz Pro Titanium model (ASIN: B0002F5G2A), this beater is a close second in performance and - at a significant savings in price - a better value.

This actually works - and works well
I purchased this key on a whim.When it arrived the instructions were not clear, but I sat the dial to #2, loosened all of the lugs on my floor tom and went around my lugs using opposing lug patterns, and tested the first cut of tuning. Too loose and deep, so I increased the setting to #3 and repeated.Almost the sound I wanted, so I used a regular key and went an eighth turn using the same pattern.Perfect.I then started on the next largest tom, working back to the smallest.Using the #3 setting plus an eighth turn I got my toms 1/2 octave apart.

Next I worked on my snare drum, starting with the snare side, then the batter side. I used #4 on the batter side and #5 on the snare side, and managed to get the crisp, yet warm, sound I wanted. The bass drum came next - I set the batter side tension 1 notch below the resonant side and achieve a great tuning. From there I went back and set the resonant sides of each of my four toms one notch higher than the batter side and marveled at the perfect tuning I attained.

This is an easy device to use - with the lever facing you move it to the left, loosen all of your lugs, then tighten each starting with one or two. When the lever clicks and moves to the right position you have reached the torque setting.Test, increase a notch if necessary, and repeat until you get the sound you want. Set the resonant heads either one notch higher or lower to make sure the batter and resonant heads do not cancel each other (and to your desired sound), and you will have a perfectly tuned set.
