Many inexpensive 15 systems simply drop a musical instrument driver into a box for maximum loudness. Combine these with a small-bore high frequency (HF) compression horn driver and the result is often peaky-sounding upper-midrange frequencies maybe okay for a screaming electric guitar. The 15 drivers in the V-252 are carefully optimized for smooth, extended midrange response without the brash, fatiguing honk of conventional 15 systems. Midrange combing is a common problem that plagues many dual 15 systems. It is a wave interference effect produced when the two low-frequency drivers are simply paralleled and try to radiate the same frequencies. Again, the result is loudness at the expense of smooth response - an unfocused, disembodied midrange sound. A more advanced (and costly) approach is to use separate, optimized crossover networks for each individual 15 driver. Carefully shading the higher frequencies from the lower tandem 15 driver eliminates these effects. The result is smooth, pinpoint midrange reproduction in the octave below the high-frequency crossover point while maintaining the benefits of mutual coupling in the bass frequencies.
