Make These Fit Better for Cheap!!! - READ THIS
I love these headphones.They sound great, they have great isolation, and they are very durable.BUT, I had almost resigned myself to an unneccessarily painful fit:I have normal sized ears, but I couldn't get either the smallest plastic or foam inserts to be comfortable for more than an hour before I felt like my ears were going to bleed from the outward pressure of these buds . . . until I had a thought: "Why doesn't Shure sell these phones with the small-ish inserts like Etymotics uses.

I had remembered the earplugs that I had used to take all of my biggest exams with, so I went down to my local sporting goods store, browsed the hunting and shooting section and found $2 rubber earplugs with three "fins" on them like the Etymotics.These plugs are hollow, so all you have to do is carefully cut a small hole on the end, cut off the bulk of the back of them (the opposite end of what you put in your ear), stick them on the bare tubes of the Shures, and eureka!My EC2s fit perfectly and sooooo much more comfortably.

I have since learned that Shure sells inserts like these for an extortive price, but why buy when you can make them for 1/5 the price.I reccommend buying 2 or 3 pairs of the earplugs your first go-around, just in case you butcher the first pair like I did.

definately worth buying
I use the e2's that came with the shure wireless monitoring system that i use to monitor broadcasts and concerts.they have a very uncolored sound (no extra bass and no extra sizzle for the high freq's) and i find them to be extremely comfortable (rubber sleeves - the foam ones got annoying).i have 2 minor complaints - the wire goes over your ear and down your back, which is great when used in conjunction with a wireless beltpack but a little more inconvenient for use with a laptop or mp3 player.also, the buds slip out of my ears every so often and they really need to be deep inside in order to hear the sound properly.also, if your music is low and you arent in the middle of a large concert or sporting event, you can hear your own breath, chewing, etc.

Sure, they sound good, but they HURT your ears!
I bought a pair and I pretty much never wear them anymore.They definitely sound great, and they block out all external sound, so all you hear is the music. . . BUT, I find them very uncomfortable to wear.The so-called "flex sleves" are relatively hard plastic.After about 1/2 hour in my ears they really start to hurt.The foam sleves are marginally better, but take a lot longer to put in.

I think there is a variation on this product that has soft rubber sleves with ridges, rather than the plastic "cones".Those are probably a lot more comfortable (and expensive).

Sound Heaven!!!!
These Headphones are just what i was praying for for 3 years. i live in NY, and the subway is a real challenge for ANY headphone pair, and these babys just passed the test!!. i didn't realize, but all of a sudden i was listening to thigs i haven't heard in my favorite music, and then i just saw the train moving, and me not having to hear it!!! this just blew my mind. get them if you take your ears and your music seriously!!!.

Simply outstanding earbuds
While these are different from typical earbuds (i.e. a bit difficult to fit) they more than make up for it in sound quality. You might have to fiddle with them (people overall seem to have more comfort with the foam earpieces, but the silicone rubber ones supplied worked well for me) to get them to fit securely, but once you do-watch out! They will blow you away!

It is true that they take a little to break in-I sped up this process by connecting them to the headphone jack on my computer, and played music through it at low volumes overnight-once they do, the sound they deliver is outstanding. No fake bass, or muddy midrange-they simply deliver accurate, crystal-clear sound.

In fact, these are so good, you might find yourself listening to these instead of your quality stereo speakers-I really appreciate the sound quality, and unless I am expecting a phone call, etc., prefer these to the stereo speakers I own-that is saying a LOT!

I recommend these without hesitation-if you have trouble fitting them, make sure you follow the instructions, and you should have no problem. A bit confusing, but well worth it!

Also, i am training for a marathon-I exercise with these and an iPod mini without any problems at all-they stay securely in place, and there is no problem with the (heavy duty-quality) cord

Don't Buy These When You Can Make Them For Cheap!!
You can make these by hacking up a cheap pair of earplugs from your local sporting goods store.This is the description/review I have posted elsewhere describing the process (initially posted for the E2Cs):

Better seal, less comfort
As nice as the E3c's are, how they sound is highly dependent on the seal you get. The triple-flange sleeves are designed to get you a better seal in your ear, and they do accomplish that (in comparison with the other plastic sleeves originally included with the earphones).

Nevertheless, these sleeves have a big drawback: they're extremely uncomfortable. They are very long and often feel like they're putting pressure on my inner ear, pressure that extends almost into the throat area. If I were to do it all over again, I would buy a pack of replacement foam sleeves instead. I believe you can get a 10-pair pack of the foam replacements for $20. The foam inserts are simply more comfortable (more like a soft earplug) and, if replaced often enough, create a seal with relative ease. ... Read more

Do you know what your ears are missing?
The E3/E3c (the only difference between the two is color) are NOT the earphones for you average bass/treble heads. These are a true introduction to the world of an audiophile experience. Ever hear the reed of a sax actually vibrating? Hear the brushes on the snare drum? Then you dont know what your ears have been missing.However i do suggest you use caution in your source in which you obtain your music because you will hear EVERYTHING so dont cheat yourself using low quality playback... because if you didnt recognize a difference before YOU WILL NOW!!

here are a few tips to further your audio experience with your E3/E3c or any headphone for that matter ( READ #3 at least )

1. achieve proper fit,and use as instructed.... directions are in the box. (if its your first time with *in ear* headphones it'll take some getting used to)

2. the true test of any sound reproduction unit is not how loud you can get it before it distorts its how well it performs at the most moderate levels you dont wanna have to crank the volume just to get the little chime of the triangle in the left side.

3. BURN IN this is perhaps the most important thing irregardless of if you spend 20 bucks or 500 you must allow for burn in time. (when i buy a new pair of any type of headphones i'll check to make sure its working perfectly, then plug it in to some sort of audio device pull up a playlist, set it at moderate volume levels and let it run for a few hours. (usual burn in time is between 12-24 hours so be patient.

there are other shure models out there but this being the entry level pair that utilizes Shures *microspeaker* its amazingly inmpressive and for those of you out there who are like me and are just looking for something cheaper to beat up because you just couldnt bare to see anything happen to your precious E5's you'll be extremely impressed withthe value of the E3/E3C.

for the under 200$ genre of personal in ear monitors these are superior in overall sound reproduction.

DONT JUST LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC, IMMERSE YOURSELF IN IT

sound fantastic...but i want more
I got these earphones for $120 from earphone solutions with free shipping, 2-year warrenty, but non-returnable barring defect. I was expecting amazing things and when I first put these in, I was in bliss. I purchased some of the triple-flanged plugs in addition, and though they are hard has hell to get into your ear, they sound about as good as the foamies but last much longer with proper cleaning. I get a good seal, and the bass does sound quite natural, but if you listen to rap or any dance/trance/heavy rock, you will miss the hard-hitting bass. I guess it's a sacrifice one has to make for clear sound in a small package. If I had more money, I would probably get some Seinheiser HD 485 cans for the home or when I crave bass. These phones are really nice, but they are expensive. Just be prepared for a little less bass than you thought you paid for.

Gorgeous sound balance!
I have the E3 gray color model and would buy it again (and again)!The bass response is widely reviewed so I won't reiterate all the solutions already spoken for.I'd just say that it makes bass sound like music and not like an artificial mask that drowns the instrumentation.A great test for E3 (and E3C) is to try it with a remastered CD where the original recording was not all processed like a 70s disco hit.Try the 1999 remaster of the famous Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert.You will hear everything with perfect clarity and balance!! Harry James' trumpet will have a beautiful timbre and Johnny Hodges alto will have that famous tone.Nothing will be sawed off or tinned down.The rhythm on the big band numbers will carry you despite the 1938 year of the recording.These earphones also do the greatest for voices.Listen to an Ella Fitzgerald recording from her Cole Porter or Gershwin Songbooks.The quality is pristine and the nuances of the full orchestration are all there - it's not traded off or manipulated. A general rule of thumb for me, is that if the original recording was done in an old analog technology and generally recorded live in the studio or in concert with limited tracking, and if the performance was good, then the music is there and will sound good with sufficient equipment.Great music sounds good at a moderate or even low volume.Remember how much you loved your Beatles 45s played on non-stereo record players!These earphones sound beautiful at a volume of 10-12 out of 40 on my MPIO 512mb flash memory MP3.On my Panasonic portable DVD, they get all of the sound effects and the spoken voices are crystal clear.For rock music, U2's All You Can't Leave Behind sounds superb! There are lots of thoughtful sounds and guitar workings that come right through that you miss on the radio (in a car or at home).Try Elton John's Madman Across the Water (the album and the song).Levon and the title track sound fresh and brand new.The guitar work that opens the title track is truly haunting and its balance with the orchestra and piano work is dramatic.I'm willing to bet it sounds just like the producers and artists intended.In sum, I think the Shure E3 and E3C is such a great product, I'm rediscovering my whole library.With such consumer satisfaction in all these reviews, it's hard to say something new, except maybe, try them with something old! You'll be thrilled at what you hear and what you've been missing.

Good product, but a little expensive?
So, I have to say from reading forums/reviews across the internet, these truly are great headphones if you can manage the right fit. ONe important thing to note however, is that by and large people are going to try and overcharge for them. Froogle.com was very useful in helping me understand this, and most importantly, it helped me find noonshopper.com, where they have these E3Cs for $127 and 7.50 shipping!!! Unbeatable!!!

A simple and affordable product with good sound
I found the DX4's to be good speakers for the money. If you are into surround sound gaming, they are not for you, but they are perfect for music on the desktop.

Note that these aren't just for computers. They have standard line-level inputs on the back, so you can attach anything to them, such as an iPod or CD player.

The cabinets are sturdy (and heavy). The cones are exposed though; there is no grille to keep curious cats, ferrets or toddlers away from the relatively delicate material of the speakers themselves. Keep this in mind when you choose a location.

The headphone jack on the front is a very nice touch, but I found the midrange boost control feature to be of little value, at least in the room I was in. Your mileage may vary.

Sure, you could go get "real" stereo speakers and an amp to drive them, but if you want some good sound on a budget these speakers with built-in amp will treat you well.

Top of home, office, or studio computer speaker systems!
Just hooked these up yesterday and I am loving them.
I have the top of the line dual 2.5gig G5 mac with 23 inch cinema screen and these are by far as good as the rest of this system.
Was not sure which speakers to get so I went to the Mission Valley Apple store here in San DIego and listened to every set they had on display. There were six sets in all and these studio monitors blew the others away.
The sales person agreed and was surprised because he had dismissed them because they did not look as cool as all the others.
If you are into music and listen to voice recordings then these are for you.
We played the same song on each setup they had and these were the only ones that had full sound and all the highs and lows but most importantly the mid range sounds too.
We discovered that these were the only speakers that played the string instruments on the recording. The other 5 didn't.
If you have an Apple store near by, I reccomend you go and check these out for yourself. Beside the obvious reason of listening to actual studio monitors there, you will be fascinated to see the store of the future, Apple.

A nice pair of starter speaker monitors
After years of exchanging computer speakers (Altec Lansing, Creative I-Trigue 3500 and others), I tried these. What a difference! You get clean, precise sound that you won't find on any other consumer grade computer speaker. These are monitor speakers so they are built to a higher standard. I've auditioned the Bose media mates and the more expensive $250 Bose system and these speakers are much better because the sound is cleaner and the response on all levels is more precise. I have a M-Audio 24/96 PCI sound card and was using a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz prior to that. Both give excellent results. The sound would distort at higher volumes when hooked up through the M-audio analog ports but was not an issue using the digital connection. However, I received the best results when I connected the M-audio to a Kenwood receiver and the speakers to the receiver. No distortion and if I wanted to I could blast the music to annoy my neighbors. These speakers are a little weak on bass range so I'd recommend pairing them with a subwoofer.

Better than the rest!
Well as I always say, if you want the best of anything, go to the speacialists.When it comes to getting sneakers, you go to a sneaker store.Pizza, you go to an Italian pizza only spot.If you want a Mercedes Benz, don't go to a used car dealer, go to a Benz dealer.

If you want good audio on your PC, don't go to Logictec, Creative(yes, that's right), Labtec, Yamaha(yes), Sony (yes...) or any of these companies who make speakers as an afterthought.You go to comapanies who specialize in speakers.JBL, Polk and the like.Edirol(Roland) is in that class as they specialze in studio gear.That alone will tell you that you will be getting premium sound before even listening to it!

I bought these sound unheard based on the company and the fact that they are studio monitors, not just mere PC(cheap) speakers.These have 10 watts each speaker, so that alone tells you that it will be half-way decent.Then they are two-way.Most PC speakers are full-range, BS speakers.Finally, they are studio monitors!That alone tells you that the sound HAS to be on point or that could not have a good name in the music industry.

The fact that they are monitors means that you get excellent stereo separation, clarity and even depth(more so on the 20 watt models).Most people do not know what true sound sounds like, so these will not be appreciated by them.These monitors can sound better than you home stereo.The bass does not reach the lows that it should, but reaches more than many of those that come with subs(you can add one to these too).These are unbeatable (in this range) for their clarity and precision.If you are REALLY into it, they do have some that pump 50, 75 watts and up in EACH speaker, but where I live I have to keep it quiet.You cannot go wrong with these at all.

outstanding desktop speakers for music lovers
These are not your usual run of the mill computer speakers in cheap, smallish plastic casing.These speakers are perfect for those people that enjoy listening to music on their computers.The overall sound quality is excellent (though they do require some time for adequate break-in), and is definitely better than
a $200-300 5.1 system with 5 tiny speakers and a sub (for music that is, if you are a gamer that doesn't listen to music on your computer having 3D sound may be more important to you than accurate sound reproduction.) As far as bass goes, these speakers do not include a subwoofer, but they do provide decent bass (though I do admit a sub would be nice, and could possibly be added if your sound card provides a sub output).

These speakers also can accomodate just about any type of input you could throw at them (standard RCA jacks, digital optical, digital coax) and also includes a headphone jack.

Overall, I have been impressed with these speakers and consider them a great deal!

welcome the dawn of new era
I tested this smallest model in the range of strictly studio supplier from deepdown America. The source was PC CD-ROM/ decoder line-output to M-Audio multichannel preamp (no equalizer!). Neither the electronics' gain level, nor the thick long hi-capacitance hi-resistance guitar cables used to connect to speakers , not the room (a resonant messy Club Multimedia in Moscow) contributed to the sound. We were intent to make it hard for the speakers so as to make easy for user.

The experience went to proove those are the very speakers for any player/PC/tape machine/whatever with master volume and analog RCA jacks. Some kind of volume knob will be there in most cases, though.

With master volume level crancked, we had the speakers deliver superior dynamics with not a shade of discernable distortion heard on sensetive chorale music. Their 70-watter built-in amps obviously belonged with a discrete true-to-life hi-end class, which chipset output of typical AV-receiver cannot match.

What's more, the myth about "rough studio sound with robbed-of low-level nuance" prooved a myth, exactly. If anything, the tiny 2-way M-Audios on quiet music preserved the soundstage which goes thin or hysterical on a receiver. Yet another ruined myth concerned the "difficult and unnecessary" controls on the speaker's back. They all were handy and immediately effective to level and tembre, working from min. to max. (left to right) regardless of maker's description.

Verdict: Stereopair of M-Audio's is terrific and immediately ready for home multichannel-output-equipped DVD player or 2-block (pre-main configuered) music centre. If you've got a kitchen mono tuner, an old radio, a ghetto blaster or a small receiver - one such compact speaker will revitalize them by adding power and FILTERING out hiss. Just the plain truth
The neck and head are an areas of great forces and heat.About 25% of body weight maybe above the shoulders.I only thought about price and sound when I first bought an mp3 player.Well, $1000.00 and five pair of headphones later I came to understand that it is difficult to make a headphone that can deal with muscular force, heat and cord weight.

So if you want a phone that will block out background sound without stressing out your player's phone jack and pull on the cords that connect to your left and right phones it is the Shure.

If you want a phone that will not be ear warmers in the cold and too hot to put on in temps over 50 F then it is Shure.

Lasly, what if you fall asleep or jog or have to wear you phones in an area were the big brand name on the phone gets you the wrong type of glance.Shure solves all of that. You can sleep in them, run in them and they do not make everyone say hey that is the top of the line brand x%$****!

I forgot to say.The higher the volume the more heat your player generates and the more power your battery uses.The money saved in headphone, player, and battery replacement will pay off the Shures.
