5-0 out of 5 stars Great microphone
This is a great microphone. I bought it and tested all functions the same day.I am shooting some non-budget short movies and it comes in very handy.Very clean sound.Deep base and crisp high tone. The price is outstanding, I feel like I'm ripping off Audio-Technica.What a steal!I don't see any reason not giving it 5 stars. It does what it promises for so little money. My only wish is that the cable would be a little longer, but then it would loose on quality, because it's not an XLR connector.Who cares though, most camcorders don't come with XLR anyway (not mine).I say buy it, you won't regret it.It's gold for peanuts.

    4-0 out of 5 stars cheep+decent pickup=worth it
    this is a good mic
i just got back from our first shoot using this thing insted of onboard camera mics
    what a difference
    the range in incridble
we had someone just walk out and keep talking, i switched the mic to tele and i could hear him allmost 100 meters away from the camera on headphones
has both tele (for long distance, often picks up to much back ground noise, and is not best for close up situations) and normal(which has decent distance as well and works fine indoors)
the only problem was that we kept getting it in the picture, but thats not a mic malfunction, just me being stupid
the windscreen is very useful, i have allways had trouble with wind using onbard camera mics, and this works much better
yes, it is mono, only putting out sound to the left ear, but using premeire you can just duplicate the left audio track and it comes out fine.

    well worth it
only downside is the tele pickup gets a bit fuzzy with backgroundnoise

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good at its intended purpose
Been using my ATR-55 for over a year.Really like the amplified TELE feature that seems to reach out and grab sounds, without picking up hardly any surrounding noise. But hey, its uni-directional, so that's one of the things it's supposed to do.Nevertheless, the NORMAL zone is about a 120degree V in front of the mic, and the TELE is about a 90degree V-zone.Was videotaping our school's football game, and filmed one half in TELE mode, and the second half in NORMAL mode. The TELE mode was almost eerie, because you could pick up the voices out on the field, but all the surrounding noise (fans) could hardly be heard. The NORMAL mode picked up a little more audience noise, so it sounded more natural, but nevertheless still filtered out the other people talking in the press tower with me.The TELE mode is very nice for lectures, so that it doesn't pick up distracting noises, including that of the camcorder's mechanism- that's why I go this in the first place, because the OMNI-directional microphone in the digital camcorder was picking up too much noise (including its own motor) during really quiet lectures.Just be aware that this unit is _not_ stereo - you should either get a mono-to-stereo adapter to use with it, or set the sound input on the camcorder to mono.Otherwise, you'll just get sound coming out of one speaker on stereo play-back.If you need stereo, get the ATR-25, which is very nice and also uni-directional, but lacks the ATR-55's TELE feature.Basically, TELE was more important to me than stereo, but it might be different for you.I wear headphones plugged into the camcorder while filming, this way I can better monitor the sound pickup, and make a determination between whether TELE or NORMAL is best for any given situation - the difference is noticeable.I gave it four stars because it is very good, but I'm sure units like a nice Sennheiser are better, but for much more money. This is a nice looking, solidly built unit, and a decent value to boot. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My search is over!!
I have studied and compared features, purchased other microphones that I had to return for just not 'measuring up' but this is the hands down winner for great quality at an excellent price!I use it with my camcorder to eliminate background noise, I use it on my computer for narration with my video editing program, and I use it with my daughter's kareoke machine for great voice quality.I used to hate hearing my recorded voice but this microphone makes my voice sound deep and rich!I love it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice mic for the price...
I bought this mic when I was browsing for something I could record my demos over. It really picks up good quality sounds! Very light and easy to hold in your hands for long periods of time. I rated it 4, however, because it isn't loud enough, unless you use Windows' Microphone booster. But other than that, you can't get much better, unless you plan on spending alot more money. Good buy. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

This Prosumer-model microphone is for advanced amateur and professional use, and is ideal for instrumental recording, thanks to Sony's sensitive Electret condenser microphone. The one-point stereo design--a single mic for stereo recording--is like having two microphones in one. This mic is ideal for portable DAT or MD digital recorders, with frequency response up to 18,000 Hz and a dynamic range of 90 dB, and is a great complement to digital recording systems. The mid/side capsules create a natural stereo panorama. The midcapsule picks up monophonic sound while the side capsule picks up left/right-difference sound. Subtracting and adding the two capsule signals yields separate left and right channels, and permits electronic adjustment of the pickup angle. The mid/side switch also selects the pickup angle between the left and right channels. Choose 90 degrees for a single voice or instrument or 120 degrees to pick up many voices and instruments arranged across the stage. The rotating midcapsule adjusts the stereo pickup pattern for the widest range of recording situations. A Cannon XLR connector from the microphone body to the supplied cable provides a secure, reliable, low-noise connection, while the oxygen-free copper Litz cord ensures superlative conductivity, minimum loss, and minimum noise. The L-shaped stereo miniplug fits most portable recorders. Supplied accessories include a detachable cable, stand, holder, windscreen, and carrying case. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great mike, but hypersensitive
I bought this mike for use with my minidisc recorders, mainly to record choral concerts at church and in other places. It has a nice stereo directionality and separation choices, but I advise you to watch your record levels or mike sensitivity setting because the sound levels tended to overloadon loud passages or with percussive music like piano when used with my recorder's default (high) mike sensitivity setting.
It's very solid and well made. I'd rather have a boxed carrying case instead of the soft pouch provided, but that's a quibble. ... Read more

    Product Description

An inexpensive version of the PZM-30 and PZM6 with XLR output, can be phantom or battery powered. The Crown® PZM®-185 Pressure Zone Microphone® is a microphone designed for general-purpose use. Ideal for applications such as conferences, group discussions, interviews, broadcast, home video production, lectures, and recordings. The mic can be placed on a large surface such as a table, floor, wall, or lectern. The PZM-185 is powered either by an internal AAA 1.5V battery or 12-48V phantom power. The boundary "paddle" can be detached so the mic will fit in your pocket. Attached to the mic is an 8-foot (2.438-m) cable leading to a tubular power module. The microphone’s low-profile design reduces "mic fright" and minimizes clutter. It is nearly invisible on camera. The PZM-185 minimizes pickup of vibration and handling noise. Its electret condenser capsule provides a wide, smooth frequency response from 50 Hz to 16 kHz. The mic’s hemispherical polar pattern allows clear pickup of everyone surrounding the microphone. The PZM-185 is protected against static and RFI. The output is balanced, low impedance, which allows long cable runs without hum pickup or high-frequency loss.Like other Pressure Zone Microphones, the PZM- 185 uses a miniature mic capsule mounted very near a sound-reflecting plate or boundary in the Pressure Zone. In this zone, direct sound from the sound source combines in phase at all frequencies with reflected sound off the boundary. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Broadcasting Mic
I am a Dj and the SM7B is a pretty good mic it is clear and has an occasional pop. I think that for on air use it is a good affordable buy. I would recommend it very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST VOICE MICROPHONE THERE IS!
If you are looking for a microphone for voice-overs or broadcast use, THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO BUY.

The Shure SM-5 and SM-7 microphones are the best voice mics ever made. The large SM-5 is no longer made, so you can only find it used, but the SM-7 is just as good.Either one, you have the best.

Don't let the price fool you. I have brought this in to studios that have $3000 Neuman condenser mics and they laughed when I said I wanted to use my $300 Shure mic instead.I told them to put up both mics and do an A/B test while I spoke into each of them. They had to agree, the Shure was better and it was a night and day difference, not hard at all to decide it was best.

Even industry publications like MIX MAGAZINE and RadioWorld have done reviews where they did the same tests and said the same things about this mic in comparison to the expensive condenser mics.

This mic has a warmth and rich sound no other mic can give you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Portable and wonderful
Having had bad experiences with other mics, I finally ponied up the money for the AT822--and am I ever glad I did. As a trombonist, I've found that recording my instrument in the varied environments I play in--my home, outdoors, concert hall, dance hall--is a difficult proposition. I'm interested in the way I sound to listeners, but most mics are meant to mic an instrument into a PA system, not record the ambience of a room. Outside of expensive concert-hall mics in complex arrangements requiring multiple mics and power, there just aren't too many options for the individual wanting good sound and not-a-lot-of equipment. The AT822 solves this problem for me, and solves it well.

Using an MD Recorder, mic stand, and the AT822, I'm able to mic all my venues and I'm rewarded with excellent recordings--recordings that satisfy everyone who receives a CD. Recording our swing band, the extreme volume that can result of a large ensemble and small room make the roll-off feature a bonus; the recordings come out undistorted even when the record levels go a little higher than I anticipated, and the roll-off isn't as discernable on the final product as with some mics. In the concert hall, I have placed the AT822 in the balcony with no roll-off and have found the recording to be spotless--no hum or weirdness from the electronics, and a final product with genuine spatial feel. I've recorded a trombone choir in a semicircular arrangement (around the center of a church) and been happy with the sound of the instruments beside and slightly behind the mic as well as those within the mics front field-of-view. Even recording my home practices, I'm rewarded with a recording that accurately reflects my sound. Indeed, the AT822 is a microphone for all venues.

The AT822 is sensitive enough to record the drop of a violin bow across an E-string at 100 feet away, but rugged enough to handle 5-feet from a trombonist at fortissimo levels. I'm extremely pleased wtih the AT822. It offers a portable, self-powered solution for the amateur musician at a reasonable price. I wholeheartedly endorse this product, and recommend that others with similar needs for a microphone consider its purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent concert recording microphone
I use this, along with a home-built preamp and a Sony MiniDisc deck, to tape live concerts of my band and others. It does a very good job.The microphone has low self noise, a good stereo image, and excellent frequency response.Since it's single point stereo, it's easy to set up. ... Read more
