Artisan EA-1 Electric Lap Steel.....great deal!
This guitar was delivered yesterday. Aside from the obvious things mentioned in many reviews, namely the placement of the cord jack is ridiculous, and the wooden nut will need a replacement at some point, this thing is fantastic. The strings that came on it, were way too light for the guitar. There was some buzzing because of this. I put on a heavier electric set (12,16,24,32,44,54) and no more buzz. I might go heavier next time. I tried a riser nut, but ended up happier with the wooden one that came on the guitar. The finish isn't perfect, but fine for the price. The tuners are decent. The electronics work good and sound great! Playing with effects a little, this lap steel can sound somewhat "hollow" acoustic with certain EQing, classic bluesy, or power chord worthy with more distortion and effects. Whatever shortcomings there are, are more than made up for by the price. And a nice gig bag came with it too.

Unbelievable!?Well, almost...
I saw the listing for this on Musician's friend, and I had to get it.For years I'd been using the pitch bend wheel on a Casio keyboard to add weepy slide effects to recordings, so this was my first chance to experience the real thing.

As you might expect, there are a number of problem areas with a $60 lap steel.First of all, the jack is on the wrong side of the instrument, meaning you'll have to get a cable with a 90 degree angled jack to use it at all.Secondly, on my guitar, there is a great deal of string buzz on the 2nd and 3rd strings.I'm not sure if its the inadequately filed nut, or the generic strat-style saddles that are to blame for this.The single coil pickup does indeed hum quite a bit even at low volume.However, I still get hours of enjoyment out of this thing, despite never having played one before.

You can get a traditional dobro/lap steel tone bar or you can experiment with various objects.I had some good luck with a ceramic coffee mug handle.It sounds good with clean amplification or with effects.The most surprising thing to me was easy it was to get a handle on the basic slide technique.I'll probably never be a great lap steel player, but I can amuse myself for hours nonetheless.

For the price of a cheap pedal, you can add an entirely new sound to your repertoire.Go ahead and pick one of these things up.Its a can't miss proposition for under $70. ... Read more

Really Nice!
I bought one of these lap steels thinking it wouldn't be much, but it really is a very nicely made, and useful instrument! It has a short scale length (about 20.5"), a wood nut, and guitar strings.It has a very nice sound, stays in tune remarkably well, and for $59 everyone should have one if just to play around with!
