4-0 out of 5 stars Great headphones, but a little heavy
I purchased these headphones 2 weeks ago from the Sony Store. When I tried them on at the Sony Store, they were very comfortable and blocked out most of the noisy background of the shopping center. The sound was pretty clear, warm strong bass, but not loud enough. It was probably because my Network Walkman wasn't powerful enough to drive the 40mm drivers. They also seemed a little too heavy for portable usage (running after the bus), but 1-2 hrs should be o.k. After trying them for 10 mins, I decided to purchase a pair, and so far no regret. If you have a lower budget and a Sony fan, check out the MDR-V300.

By the way, these headphones actually block more noise and sound much better than those expensive noise-cancelling headphones (including the $150 Sennheinser PXC250, but probably not the $300 Bose Quiet Comfort 2). So, don't waste your money on those.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent headphones, dont forget their power requirments
I bought these headphones because I wanted fuller base and sturdy portable design. The MDR-V500DJ is definitely built well, but when you use them with a notebook or cd player or mp3 player they sound cheap and thin. The cd players and all just don't have enough power to push those 40 mm drivers. These headphones have an impedance of 40 ohms making them useless unless you have a preamp in your sound card, an external preamp or a good size home theater amp.The non-professional headphones that will work with your smaller devices have an impedance of around 20ohms or so.I would recommend Panasonic RP HT355 Ear-cup Headphones. They don't fold, but they sure do give a lot fuller bass response and cost about half as much.

2-0 out of 5 stars Muddled high-end for this price!? NO WAY!
Well, I embarked on finding a new set of travel headphones after my last long plane ride. The earbuds just weren't hacking it, even though the pair I have are quite good. The jet engine noise finally got to me.

I have an old pair of Sony MDR-M77 headphones which are quite good, but I wanted something new.So, I studied what was available and settled on the MDR-V500DJ headphones. After purchasing a pair, I regret my choice and I am returning them.

When I got these headphones, I immediately plugged them into my iPod and picked a favorite cut from XTC (Mayor of Simpleton). As I listened to the song, I kept wondering what was wrong,Then, it dawned on me, the treble was entirely muffled.I grabbed the MDR-M77 and did a A-B test with several tracks.Same result. The MDR-V500DJ has little or no high-end.Just as a sanity check, I grabbed my Sony MDR-V6 phones and did the same test.I consider the MDR-V6 one of the best headphones ever made by the way.Yeah, the bass was definitely richer than the MDR-M77, which seem bright in comparison, but both were much closer to what I expected than the MDR-V500DJ.

I thought it might be the iPod, so picked a coupled of CDs (MFSL Dark Side of the Moon & Bernstein in Berlin-Beethoven Symphony no.9) to try in my portable CD player.Same result. While the MDR-M77 was the brighest of the three, the lack of high end on the MDR-V500DJ made neither CD sound good.Once again, the MDR-V6 was the best and most balanced of the three.

Still seeking the perfect lightweight headphones, I went to a local Magnolia Hi-Fi to try a better comparison.I tried both noise cancelling models from Sony, several Sennheiser models, the MDR-V600, MDR-V500DJ, and MDR-V300.First of all, forget the noise cancelling models.None of them sounded as good as MDR-V500DJ.The MDR-V600 was the best of them all and reminded me of the MDR-V6 (which I understand they replaced). The MDR-V300 is definitely better than the MDR-500DJ by a long shot, and I would say the MDR-V300 is comparable to Sennheiser HD-212.I am going to try them side-by-side at home soon.

Although many of the Sennheiser phones sounded good, they seemed over-priced compared to the MDR-V600.The only one that was close in price and quality was the HD-280.By the way, the HD-280 was uncomfortable and put a lot of pressure on my head.

Unless you like listening to bass only, do not buy the MDR-V500DJ headphones.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too quiet for their intended use
Let me begin by saying that these headphones are advertised as "for DJs/for studio use."Given this, one would expect Sony to be targeting their DJ audience with these headphones.

Which they most certainly did not!

While the audio quality of these headphones is quite impressive for the price (surpassing the similarly priced v600s, if you ask me), the fact that these are designed for DJ use bothers me because they lack in volume.Even with both headphone & master volume maxed on my mixer (pre-amp), I find myself struggling to hear what's happening on the channel B while channel A is playing over the speakers.

Kick in the extra cash and get the v700s, which outperform these in every way possible and are much better suited for live performance use.If, on the other hand, you are looking for a set of headphones for home use, these are a reasonable consideration.

4-0 out of 5 stars They fill the need.
Good - Loud, Crisp Sound, Fairly Comfortable, Tough Bad - Big, Heavy, Large Heads Only

I bought these as a replacment to the flimsy plastic headphones that came with my Discman. They definintely serve as a good replacement set for desk listening. They are quite bulky and "DJ" feature of the ear pieces makes them awkward to carry around in a bag. They do a great job helping me tune out the world around me. The cushy ear pads fit comfortably around my ears to seal them off from most outside noise. The bass is almost two much for my little brain - caused heavy brain vibration. The heavy duty construction is a strong selling point for these babies. You can break them with normal use and occasional drops. The do fit fairly snug on my bald head. However, even with my fairly large melon, I have to keep them on one of the smaller settings. The above metioned construction makes them heavy and they tend to slip quick. To prevent this slipping you have to have the cross piece rest directly on your head. Those of you with an afro or fluffy hair may want to consider another set of headphones. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars great sound, but uncomfortable
Pros: great sound, clear bass, stay in place even while running.
Cons: on my head (big) and my girlfriend's (small), the hard plastic of the head band presses uncomfortably against the skull right behind the ear. While I have recommended the Koss SportaPro to many people, I would not recommend these.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grade A low-end headphones
I love these headphones.Considering how fast I usually go through headphones, with constant wear and near constant movement, these lasted a good long time.I managed to keep them in perfect working condition for a solid year.

Unfortunately the paint isnt made to last, and by the time the cord got caught on a drawer they were entirely plastic-grey and the foam of the ear pieces was entirely a bleaced-out yello.

Excellent headphones for the person who likes good sound, but breaks headphones often.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype ... these things suck
Just got them in the mail...opened them, put them on and they were a little tight around my head...pulled on them to stretch the plastic a little (like most wrap-arounds do), and the things broke in half! Can't comment on sound quality, since I never had the chance to hear them...

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it at any price
These headphones started falling apart from the minute I took them out of the box.The ear pieces are extremely delicate and not able to handle touch without the foam unattaching itself from the headphone.A real pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than my $150 Bose set?
I read about these headphones at HeadRoom ( http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=2&subTopicID=14 ), and because my old Panasonic set had a faint but insanely irritating rattling sound, I decided that I'd give them a try.I figured that for $16, you really can't go wrong.

Like HeadRoom said, these things have amazing sound quality for the price. When I first got the headphones in the mail, I compared five of my best-produced albums (Shpongle - Are You Shpongled, Dream Theater - Train of Thought, Ott - Blumenkraft, Tool - Lateralus, and the remastered version of Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon) between these KSC-55's, and my $150 set of Bose TriPort headphones. They were compared first on my vintage (and very well-maintained) Sansui G-6000 stereo receiver system running line-out CD audio from my Panasonic SL-CT800 portable MP3/CD unit, and then with the headphones directly in the headphone jack of the SL-CT800.All equalizer settings were kept flat unless otherwise noted.

For use around the house with my stereo working as a headphone amplifier, the differences between the two were virtually transparent as far as audio quality goes. The KSC-55's, unlike my set of TriPorts, are extremely lightweight, very comfortable, and well ventilated as well, which make them almost preferable to their much more expensive alternative. The only benefits that I noticed about the Bose set were things that only a larger size can produce:Greater acoustic isolation and smoother bass at extremely high (read: uncomfortable) volume levels.

While being powered by the amplifier in the portable unit, the sound produced by both sets of headphones were obviously inferior to that produced through the amplifier. The Bose Triports, being higher-end consumer headphones, want more power to produce the excellent quality sound that they're capable of, and unfortunately very few portable units are able to provide enough power to really take advantage of them. The KSC-55's, however were able to produce great sound quality, and as such, were far preferable to the TriPorts with a portable unit. The Koss headphones performed even better when equalization settings were enabled on the SL-CT800, whereas the TriPorts sound like trash whenever any sound manipulation settings are applied; their acoustic equalization is overpowering when anything is done before the sound reaches the drivers. When factoring in the great portability of these headphones, they are now a must-have to my collection of audio-equiptment.

The ONLY thing that I personally dislike about these is the cord; it feels a bit flimsy compared to that of my aforementioned Panasonic set.Regardless, the set is stunning.

If you are considering buying cheap headphones anytime in the near future, don't even consider buying a pair other than these. If you don't mind the horrible looks, poor portability, ultimate clunkiness, and increased price of the Grado SR60s, then they are the clear choice for amazing sound at $70, but if you want something that is streamlined, portable, attractive, or even just cheaper, then go for these. You won't regret it, and at this price, you can spring for 2-day shipping. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but read this for a better alternative
The Bose Triports sound very good, but I will try to convince you to check out the Sennheiser HD 485 headphones instead.

First, Amazon is selling the Sennheisers for about half the price as the Bose Triports.

Second, while the Bose do sound very good, the Sennheiser phones sound better. In my research, I found many reviews that said the Sennheisers are the best sounding phones under $250, and I concur.

Third, the build quality of the Sennheisers is FAR superior to the Bose Triports. The plug, cord, ear pads, and headband are all significantly sturdier. The Bose has a cheap headband that probably won't last a year. The Bose cord is super skinny and therefore easily prone to shorts. The Sennheisers have a thicker cord that is much less likely to develop a short, but if it does, these phones are designed so that the user can easily replace the cord.If the Bose cord develops a short, you'll have to send it back to the manufacturer, wait 3-4 weeks, and pay for labor as well as the cord.

The only advantage of the Bose Triports is their light weight:they weigh 2 ounces less than the Sennheisers. But at 7.5 ounces, the Sennheisers are still extremely light compared to most headphones, and you can wear them for hours without any fatigue.

Please do yourself a favor and consider the Sennheiser HD 485 headphones at half the price of these Bose Triports.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fragile Like Eggshells !!
I wanted a better set of headphones, so I purchased a set of Bose Tri-Port headphones at the Best Buy store in Sioux Falls, SD. The sound the Tri-Ports produced was very good, but they only lasted about four months until late one night the left ear cup literally fell apart in my hands. My electronic equipment is very important to me, I do not treat it rough or abuse it in any way, the Tri-Ports just disintegrated. My first warning should have been the broken Bose display headphones at the Best Buy store, because mine fell apart in exactly the same spot where they were broken. On the positive side the people at the Bose store at the Mall of America were great, they replaced the Tri-Ports with no questions asked even though I did not buy the headphones in their store. In fact, I used the old Tri-Ports as a down payment on the Bose Quiet Comfort 2 headphones. I really love the sound the Quiet Comfort 2's produce, but you know what ? I recently noticed a piece of plastic broken out of the left head band support -- Uh Oh !! Bose headphones produce very good sound, but they are fragile like eggshells.

1-0 out of 5 stars Criminally overpriced - please audition other gear!
Well, you may not necessarily believe that, with all the hype that surrounds Bose, these headphones would be anything other than stellar. They are, unfortunately, very subpar. In truth, these are rather cheap headphones, utilizing very light construction with a predominance of plastics, and very cheap diaphragm materials. The "Tri-Port" technology is nothing more than a plastic shield over the diaphragm with three asymmetrical cutouts that capture the sound at different parts along the diaphragm. I suppose that this does help in making a very cheap diaphragm sound better, but it is not a substitute for better materials and higher-quality construction. I expect the Triports cost no more than $20 to make.

Many consumers walk into the local Best Buy, try these headphones out, say "hey, they're great!" and walk home with a brand new pair. Why is that? Because most people haven't heard higher-quality systems, and compared to what is commonly available at Best Buy, yes, these are a notch above. However, there are several things you should know:

1) There are much better sounding headphones that are much cheaper.

2) The Triports are defective. The headband design is very flimsy, and is almost guaranteed to break after several months of use. I several friends who own these, and their headbands ALL broke after a few weeks.

3) Most of the phones to which these are compared are really terrible. The Sony MDR-V700, against which the Triports are often compared, is a very poor quality phone that isn't designed for home use - it's designed to offer DJ's lots of bass without any regard for detail and clarity. Saying that the Triports are better than the V700's isn't saying much at all.

I don't want to tell you that you're all wrong and that I'm all right. I want to say this: use your own ears. Audition real, high-end headphones before you spend $130 or whatever on these, and then decide for yourself what you want to buy. You owe it to yourself to get the best when spending this much money.

Here are a few models that I urge you to look at instead of these:

1) Sennheiser HD555, 590, 595, and 280 Pro. The HD580, 600, and 650 receive a lot of well-deserved praise, but they need expensive amplification in order to shine, and are in a different league that the Triports, hence, comparing them directly is unfair.
2) Sony MDR-V6. Not the MDR-V600! These are very different phones. The MDR-V6 is an older, discontinued model with different drivers that sounds fantastic, unlike the V600, which is very subpar.
3) Grado SR-60, SR-80, SR-225. All Grado headphones sound exceptional. The SR-60, at $69, will blow the Triports out of the water.
4) Audio-Technica ATH-A500, A700, and A900. These are exceptional Japanese headphones. They're hard to find in the US, but online you can definitely buy them. They compete directly against the Triports, and offer stunning sound quality for the money. They're also very well built and reliable, if slightly bulky.
5) If you can, listen to a Stax system. Granted, these systems cost as much as $3,000 for the headphones alone, but this will tell you what a hi-fi pair of headphones SHOULD sound like. Stax headphones are some of the best.

For portable headphones that will be used with mp3 players, I suggest that you look at:

Etymotic Research ER-4P, ER-6i; Shure e2c, e3c, e4c, and e5c; Westone UM2; Sharp MD-33; Sony MDR-EX51 and EX71; Audio-Technica ATH-CM7 and CM7ti; Koss KSC-35, KSC-75, and PortaPro; Sennheiser HD-25, PX-100 and PX-200; and last of all, Stax SR-001 Mk II, which while hard to find and expensive ($239 Japanese street price), is the best sounding portable available, period (and is the only portable electrostatic headphone in the world). Keep in mind that it needs a mini-to-mini interconnect, since it requires the use of an amplifier (which is included).

Use your own ears! I've told you where to start research. Please take the time and finish it. You will be rewarded with a quality product, and you will be grateful for the time that you spent researching the information.

For questions, please look at www.head-fi.org. It is an excellent source of information on anything and everything headphone-related.

I sincerely hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bose truely cares about customer satisfaction...Thank You
These are the best headphones. The sound quality is superb, crystal clear, and has powerful bass.In the time I've possessed them, I have never witnessed any problem except a slight momentary distortion when adjusting the volume. This however may just as well be the player it is hooked to.The structure does feel fragile where the cans connect to the headband, and I am being especially careful when handling them. The price is a little steep, but the sound quality is worth it.These headphones do a superior job reducing outside sound, even though it does not have sound canceling technology. The glacier blue is very attractive.I suggest not using these headphones when outdoors, for when the wind blows, it enters the cans and makes it difficult to hear the music. If you want to test the true magic of these headphones; when listening to them, lightly place your fingers over the silver circles that are bellow the Bose logo. You should hear a dramatic difference in the sound quality. The sound should seem very shallow with very little bass, simular to average headphones. When you take your fingers away, you truely experience the Bose difference. It is refreshing to know that Bose is a quality name that truly cares about customer's satisfaction.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, junk construction
I am yet another reviewer who loves the sound but can't believe the crappy construction. I've been using my pair for over a year since my girlfriend gave them to me for Xmas, and I have used them a lot; at least several hours every day while I'm writing or working on my website. The sound is great, but the design is ridiculous.

I have broken mine in 4 or 5 places, on both sides, simply from taking them on and off several times a day. I have never dropped them, stepped on them, thrown them, or used them anywhere other than at my home office. No accidents are required to snap these plastic pieces of crap!

Tape and bent paperclips have kept them usable, but they now look like Frankenphones with the taped on metal bits, and I haven't been able to wear them over the top of my head since about a month after I bought them when they first snapped as I was putting them on. I wear them below my chin, so I am hardly stretching the flexible plastic at all, but constant breaks are inevitable in the cheap and very thin plastic sides.

If these headphones were part of a car or gaming system they would have been recalled years ago, since the design and construction is simply unable to stand up to routine use, and despite their excellent sound and ear padding/comfort I can not give them more than a 1-star rating. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
I tried these. I can only list one pro and one con.

Pro: very comfortable
Con: no bass

If you're like me and like a lot of bass, pass on these.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but could be better
These headphones aren't too bad. They're a little tricky to figure out how to get them to stay on your ear at first, but once you get it, they stay on pretty good. The sound quality isn't bad at all.I wouldn't recommend them for working out/running because, depending on the size of your ears, they might not stay on real well. They're pretty comfortable after a few minutes of wearing them.<br /> <br /> I'd recommend them if you aren't looking for something to listen to while not moving around a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars not going no where
This headphone is going no where. It is also small which is a good thing. My friend has one for a year now and it is still not broken.GET IT TRUST ME YOU WILL BE HAPPY BECAUSE I WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY WITH IT.JK.LOL.

2-0 out of 5 stars One size does not fit all
This Sony earphone is a nightmare to use.The earbuds are too big and the clips don't fit properly. Its a nusiance to get them on and they don't always stay on.<br /> <br /> The price was good, but if they don't fit, whats the point.<br /> <br /> Pass on these earphones! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice but
Good clean loud if necessary sound but the headband is somewhat difficult to adjust plus the major flaw is the microphone. The mic doesn't seem to be amplified at all, low quality, whatever I had to adjust the Mic input to the max in XP to get it to pickup anything. Also I took apart the mic as well, the design is somewhat off, foam covering glued on one side, the other side had a removable foam filter covering the mic.The problem I notice was the foam was compressing the mic preventing it from picking up sound very well.I left the foam piece out. & after putting it back together the mic performance was fine. But be aware the mic signal seems to be pretty low.I tried running the mic through a Belkin KVM with nothing but static being picked up.With the mic hooked directly to the sound card along with the modifications it worked ok.

2-0 out of 5 stars Uncomfortable...microphone, decent sound
Uncomfortable, below average microphone, decent sound...
Bass and treble is decent, but nothing extraordinary.
These headphones are BIG and the headband can be a bit uncomfortable -- especially after long use.
The microphone [is bad].I played a few PC games using these headphones and almost no one could hear what I said (yes, all my PC settings were correct).

I wouldn't recommend these headphones.Look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad, not great
these are pretty normal. The mic works great.By looking at the headphones you'd think that they'd be killer for multimedia and have a lot of bass and stuff. They don't.Even though they're huge, their pretty comfortable and they've got decent volume. The cord is long which is important when they have to reach behind your computer so you don't have your forhead pressed to the monitor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, mediocre microphone
...This is exactly what I was looking for in a gaming headset. It has the big stereo headphone type earpieces, and a mic to boot.I steered away from the Plantronics headsets only because of the small earpieces that push on your ears.If you play games for as long as I do, it doesn't matter how soft the earpieces are... if they rest on the cartilidge of your ear, you're going to get uncomfortable. These Koss SB-40 headphones rest around your ears creating an all day comfortable feel. They isolate outside sound better than any other headset I've used, and they have far superior sound to any *computer headset* I've used.

The only drawback is this. They are about as good as you come on sound for computer headsets, but the microphone leaves plenty to be desired. While the mic isn't horrible, it definitely doesn't perform as well as the higher end Plantronics headsets. The sound that is produced is exceptionally tinny, or muddy... much like a poor quality MP3 file. Not that you can't understand what is being said... it's just not as crystal clear as some headsets. The microphone is plenty sensitive, and is still better than the mic on a (lower priced) headset.

All in all for the price, this is an awesome headset. You can play games all day long without discomfort to your ears.In game chat is made easy.I would recommend this headset over the Plantronics line anyday, just for the sheer comfort it provides.I wish I could rate it 4.5 stars, because it warrants more than 4, but not quite 5.

If you're looking for the best sound and rarely have need for a microphone stick with stereo headphones and a table top mic.Sennheiser makes the best.Even their worst is better that most companies best.Good luck, see you in CS, or in BF1942.{NOC}DynaGlide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good performance at a reasonable price
The SB40's over-ear cushions fit well, and are comfortable over eyeglasses. The mic adjusts easily and stays put. The wide strap headband is separate from what appear to be a pair of spring steel headband wires, giving a precise positioning of the earpieces without sitting on the tops of your ears or cutting into the top of your head. The 8' cord gives surprisingly greater freedom than the 5' that usually comes with the El Cheapos.

Acoustically, the phones have good sensitivity, able to achieve ear-splitting volume levels from my SB Live before noticeable distortion. Particularly noticeable is the very clean, honest bass which should make both gamers and amateur musicians happy.

On the downside, the SB40's split "cowboy hat" cord gets twisted easily, quickly snugging up around your chin. The clothespin headband adjusters are a little hard to set precisely but when you do get them set, they stay put. The mic is a little less sensitive than some, needing to be positioned right next to the mouth to get good volume from non-boomy voices.

All in all, the SB40 appears to be well-built, and offers a good balance of comfort and performance for both multimedia and communications at a reasonable price. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't do anything worth the price
I wouldn't say that they cancel noise, all they do is make what you are listening to louder when you turn on the "noise cancelling feature".I only notice the hiss when the music is not playing, but I dont notice it over the music.I got these becasue I spend a lot of time studying in public places for school and I think they also let out a lot of sound as well.So everyone else can hear what you are listening to (for those of you who are considerate of others).I hate knowing that everyone else can hear what I'm hearing when listeing to stuff through headphones(thats the point of headphones isn't it?)Anyways I might return these since I just bought them yesterday and pick a nicer pair of sonys.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful gift for a road warrior
I travel a lot on airplanes (>125k miles last year), a lot of it on international flights where a good set of headphones is crucial. I've been using the Aiwa headphones for about 2 years and have found them to be a nice compromise from the fabulous - and fabulously expensive - Bose headphones.

My version came with an airplane adapter (essential) and little attenuator cable that is required in most cases because the volume on the plane is set up to cut through the background noice with high volume. When the headphones cut out the background noise, the resulting audio is way too loud. Hence the need for an attenuator.

I don't use them on the ground or in any other situation very often, and never with the noise cancellation turned on, so the problems with hiss that others mention are never a problem for me.

If you can afford it, the Bose noise-canceling headset (about $300) is truly amazing. Comfortable (the earpieces fit around your ears) and with terrific audio response. American Airlines sometimes lets customers in international business class use a set, and it will spoil you for all others. However, I wasn't willing to pay 10X, and the Aiwa's are a nice compromise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected
Sometimes I like picking something up even though people gave it bum reviews. I got these at an awesome price ($13), and I'm very happy with them. Great bass response, good noise cancelling feature. There is a noticeable 'hiss' when you flip the noise cancelling feature on, but then again, I wasn't expecting the Bentley of headphones at a Ford Escort price. The only qualm I might have is a similar complaint as others; there is a bit of discomfort when wearing them, one side seems to apply more pressure than the other which is a little annoying. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for some purposes
I've been using these headphones for a while and have been very pleased so far.First the battery life is outstanding. I used the headphones for over a year before the batteries ran out.Others have complained about the fit but I guess I'm lucky in that they don't bother me.There is some hiss when you turn them on and I wouldn't recommend them for quiet listening. In airplanes and on the subway however I have found the headphones to work very well in cancelling noise and the hiss is really not a factor.Sometimes high pitched noise like voices or loud headphones feel like they are amplified.Overall, for subway/bus/plane listening these are a good deal and I recommend them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hissy Fit
These headphones create an annoying hiss that cancels out any good they do by cancelling outside noise. I hate them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Sound Quality!
I was looking to buy a good quality headset to hook up with Yahama P120 digital piano and Onkyo SR702 receiver. Someone recommended this headset to me. The sound quality is superb. SONY has detailed specifications on its dynamic range, response.

From my listening experience both from the Yamaha P120 digital piano as well as SACD played from SONY DVPNS775 via ONKYO SR702, the sound from this headset is amazing. I can hear all the details and nuances from piano music, orchestra work. For example, when in the first movement of Rachmaninov No 3, there is a very very "light and sutble" string accompaniment from th violins, I can hear that very very well on this headset. When there is no output from the Onkyo Receiver, there is NO blank noise at all.

I was considering to buy Bose QuietComfort II to upgrade my Bose QuietComfort I. I am happy that I bought this SONY. I compared the sound quality of this SONY MDR7509 with Bose QuietComfort I (not II, the new one), the sound quaility of SONY MDR7509 is way way better. The Bose's dynamica range (they do NOT publish it by the way) sounds much much less, much details from the piano and orchestra music is missing and there is a lot of blank noise when there is no output from the Onkyo receiver.

The shortcoming of SONY MDR7509 is that it is not as light weight and comfortable as the Bose QuietComfort I(not sure about II) and doesn't actively or eletronically cancels the enviromental noise. I really care about sound quality, SONY is superb in that respect.

One big problem I have with Bose is that they do not publish their technical data besides weight and dimension. When you call them to ask their frequency range, noise ratio, selectivity, they won't tell you. Instead they ask you to go their show room to try. In their show room, you will compare their products to nothing. And of course, they will most likely look good. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible sound quality- like a cheap radio (I returned them)
This sony PRODUCT MDR-RF975RK was aweful. The volume was very low, I had to crank the volume on my sterio to hear anything, there was lots of static and as you moved around it would suddenly turn into a deafening screeming sound.I was unable to use these comfortably at home or at work.In neither place do I have a cordless phone, but there was tons of interferance and they were so abrasive to my ears I gave up beacuse I was afraid I'd get ear damage.I let them charge for a full 24 hours before I used them.
I would not even try these- they sound worse than a 2$ raido speaker. My guess is that you have to have a chord, or maybe infared technology instead, or maybe you can;t live in a city ( like I do), and must not have any electornics anywhere near them.
I bought these from ( and returned them to) Vanns, which was A GOOD COMPANY to deal with. I thank Vanns for refunding my money so quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased UNTIL these died completely
I've had these for about 6 months. They sound great and work very well far from the source. To me the most important part of the headphones is how comfortable they feel. These feel good, but I eventually feel the need to remove them [perhaps it's the earrings].
AMENDING my review to ONE STAR: these headphones stopped working after about 8 months

1-0 out of 5 stars Died after 40 days
I was very happy with the headphones until one afternoon they stopped working. I played with the controls and modes without luck. I moved them around on my headand they began working again (as if a wire was not making good contact somewhere). The next day they died completely.

I called sony since they were still under the 90 day waranty and after two long phone calls they said that they are eligable for replacement. However, they will be replaced only with a refurbished set that is "similar", but the person on the phone could provide no details on what kind of replacement this would be.

For the price I would expect better service (ie money back, replacement with new unit), and that they would last more than fourty days.

1-0 out of 5 stars Think twice.
After receiving the headphones and following the directions to charge 24 hours, they worked fine the first couple times they were used. Then I began noticing that the indicator light on the base showed the power on when they were not in use.Shortly after, the headphones started to die after a few minutes use and would not recharge even when left as long as 2 days undisturbed.

Sony instructed me to send them in for service. After many, many follow-up calls I was told that my headphones could not be repaired and I would be sent a replacement. After many, many more calls Sony informed me that there were no replacements available and none expected within the foreseeable future.Sony offered me a full refund of the purchase price, which I accepted.

After 3 months I am again looking for a set of wireless headphones. The Sennheiser RS-65 set looks good to me.While I applaud Sony for doing the right thing and issuing me a refund, I cannot recommend this Sony product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Light wt, easy to use, battery will not charge correctly
We bought the 900 MHZ unit because of its light wt. and distance of use.We spent the first 48 hr charging it like directed, it should have taken 24 hr., but the light did go off finally. The unit worked great all around the house with very little static. After using it 5 days the battery ran out, we put it on the recharger for another 48 hours, and the charging light never went off as directed telling us it was now charged compleatly. We called Sony and was informed the battery charge light and charge should shut off after 24 hours if not it is defective and should be replaces or repaired. We took it back and got another unit only to have the battery light never shut off after 36 hours the first time around.Sony no longer has any service centers and sends you to "Parts/Accessory Inquiries" these people know even less about this device. Are the direction wrong, will the unit battery give out from over charging, will the head set finally not recharge at all, for $150.00 thoses are big questions. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Peformance, Mediocre Comfort
    Pros:
-Good sound quality. Good clear treble and good bass for headphones
    -Volume control
    -Sturdy construction

    Cons:
-Uncomfortable on ears after 15-20 mins
-Seperate knobs for volume make it hard to keep the volumes equal in the two channels
-Earphones have very limited range of motion
-Sound bleeds out when earphones are covered
-Sound bleeds through when volume knobs are turned completely off
-Coiled cord doesn't stretch very far before it yanks your headphones off

    Bottom Line:
I really don't think they're worth the $$$. Comfort is a high priority of mine and these rank pretty low. My old Aiwa headphones were way better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beautiful TD-80s
I've been in love with the Koss TD-80s since the early to mid nineties as an adolescent entering the likes of Nirvana and Bush. At that time, I only had enough money to purchase the TD60s, which were a fine introduction to the Koss line that I grew to love.

Today, sadly, I can't commend Koss for their product changes--the introduction of the UR series, which I ridicule, "U-R stupid for buying them", and their incessant failure at making good earbuds beyond the delicate "Plug"...

However, I still hold true to their classic products, and this model is one of them. During those adolescent years, my only ability to listen to these headphones were by way of visiting downtown music stores whom displayed their latest releases at listening stations complemented by the Koss TD-80s. If there was something to be heard, the Koss TD-80s gave it. Whenever I wanted to buy a CD, if it were not on the TD-80s, I would think before buying it in fear of poor production, for if it were poor production, the '80s would let you know...

I recommend these headphones as a household reference for anyone moderately serious about their music. Yes, Sennheiser may be for the purist, and Sony may be for the everyday-er whom works out and advances in their professions or schoolings, but the classic Koss is simply for anyone who wants to hear and feel their music. In addition, given the age of this model, the bargains of today on this headphone is ridiculous and should make anyone in the market for closed headphones consider them.

5-0 out of 5 stars 60 Ohm Impedence - Lot of headroom reduces distortion
Closed-earpiece headphones no matter the brand are not comfy for extended wear! The reason for purchasing these headphones is the 60 Ohm impedance. The higher the impedance rating allows you to listen to your home stereo, boombox, mp3 player, etc. at higher volumes without any distortion so you get great clarity and definiton from the bass, mids and highs. Also, you can plug this set of headphones into a stage monitoring system or instrument amplifier with the same great results. The Koss line of headphones are an exceptional value. Notice the cost of other manufactures' headphones that are rated at 60 ohms and above and you will see what I mean. No! I do not work for Koss, just an informed shopper!

2-0 out of 5 stars Dont get them!Spend the Extra money!
I was debating between these and some facier pairs on ebay and boy did I regret it.These are heavy, bulky, and not comfortable on my ears. They sound pretty good, the base is great, but not worth giving up comfort. My neck even hurts wearing these because the headphone are so heavy. Its like putting a textbook on top of your heard for a couple of hours. Its also such a relief when i take them off for my ears.My ears were red. They should make them out of more plastic rather than metal.Next time I will spend the extra [money] to get a better pair.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a good buy!
I really love these headphones. They have volume control on each ear cup which is great when you have one ear that hears better than the other, like I do. I also love that the headband itself is made of metal not plastic, so you can stretch them out to fit your head without worrying about breaking them. The ear cups are adjustible too, so I can turn them slightly to fit my ears. I have also noticed that my ears don't sweat as much as with some of my other headphones. The cord is coiled so I don't have a long cord constantly hanging behind me and dragging on the floor. The sound is also pretty good, I've heard better but these are nice for all the features and the price. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the inner part of the ear cup has nothing covering it. You have a nice cushiony padding around the rim and on the inside, nothing, just hard plastic. It almost looks like it's not finished. Besides this problem, I would definitely recommend these headphones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Headphones For the Price
These headphones are really good, and they aren't priced in excess of $100, like a lot of headphones I found on Amazon. They have a great frequency response, are comfy (although, a little more padding on the band connecting the two earphones might be nice), and they give you a pretty healthy sounding bass. Just what I was looking for.

They come with a quarter-inch headphone jack, so I recommend getting an adapter so that the headphones will plug into the more common sized plug.

If you're looking for a decent, sturdy pair of headphones for a low budget, these are the ones to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful buy
Absolutely wonderful headphones. Great sound quality, regardless of the price. I especially love the quarter inch plug which I directly plug into my bass guitar for superb sound quality that doesn't bother anyone else in the room. You will not find a better pair of headphones at this price. Highly recomended

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Price, Nothing better
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of these headphones.I have owned many different styles and brands of headphones in the past and to reach the quality of these one would expect to pay quite alot more than these. The Bass response is unbelievable, High end is crisp and clear.I use them mainly with my computer and the sound is excellent.I can only imagine how they would sound thru a true stereo. If your looking for a great set of headphones believe me, you dont have to pay alot to get great quality. You will be impressed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Retracting feature is great
I have used this set with my I-pod for several months. I purchased this unit because of the retractable ear bud feature and I am pleased with it. I used to have a problem with any other ear buds cords tangling up. I have had no problems with tangling or retracting with this unit. The sound is acceptable -- in fact it's great for the price. I use my noise canceling ear buds when I want superior sound, but these are perfect for everyday use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I purchased this retractable headset from Amazon.com about 3 months ago for $13. Besides being relatively heavy and clunky, the plug often slipped out of my iPod. Also, it gets stuck and won't retract. And when I pulled on it to get it out, the ear plugfell apart and now it won't play in one ear. Additionally, it still gets tangled and occasionally it won't retract back. I am already looking for another pair of earphones. If I could give this product less than 1 star, I would. It is cheaply made and not worth the money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a great help
i bought this for my eleven year old daughter who has trouble hearing BUT does not "qualify" for a hearing aid. she mostly needed it to hear her riding instructor. it works. oh yes, it does. it's amazing! my mom is going to get one for herself after trying this one.the only thing i wish it had was like an elastic band, likea sports band, or the bands that come with the jogger's radios. we had to rig one up on our own for my daughter. no big deal though. great product for the price. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I got them for $20
Based on the deal I got, $20, I can't complain. I have an average size head, 7 1/4 but I can see how they are tight on the ears and could be more comfortable.I simply slide them forward so they are more on my temples.I wore them for 3 hours with no annoyance. The reception was good once I dialed them in and haven't re-adjusted them yet. I walked around the house and out to the street and didn't lose clarity.I did lose it when I had 3 walls, 2 drywall and 1 brick but I don't plan on listening to tv out in the driveway often. For the money they were worth it and I can stay up and not bother the sleeping kid or wife.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Decent with TV
Not sure about range - I go outside with them but can't go real far.Receiver is sitting on the tv.I've had them for some time.Only complaint I have is that the AAA Rechargeable batteries I have won't work in them.I haven't tried lithium batteries, but I plan to.For the price, they do a pretty good job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good quality to dollar value!
After reading some reviews I was skeptical but all I wanted them for was to sit at my desk in studio since strereos, or out loud playing of music, is against policy.I figured these would get the job done and wasn't expecting much.WOW, was I suprised!I love my music and I got much better sound quality than I expected for the money I spent. However, like all inexpensive product, the Jensen Wireless Headphones takes a while to tune into the right frequency and requires very fine tuning across a very wide band to get superior sound quality. If you want to save the money and get these, be prepared to have patience before enjoying at full potential.I give it 4 stars!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorperformance
The only use I have found for these headphones is to use them directly in front of the TV. Even then the sound is extremely poor. Any sharp noises like clapping or drums comes out as static. I have to fiddle with the tuning constantly to keep the static down, and that's without moving around. If you position yourself just right, have the tuning just right, they are almost usable. Don't even think about using these for music as that experince would be painful with these headphones. I also cannot use these in most parts of the house as they tend to pick up noise from Fluorescent lights and cordless telephones quite easily. Do not waste your money on these, as they are not worth it even if they were free.

2-0 out of 5 stars Constant Adjestment
TV sound is OK, but static requires almost constant tuning of earphones. I usually used the earphones within 10 feet of the transmitter, but still got a lot of static unless perfectly tuned. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent!
I am writing this review while using this wonderful headphones -listening "Juan Luis Guerra y su 440"-... They are just amazing!
Light, confortable, the sound is so clear that you can discriminate each instrument, just perfect and the price is as good as the product.
My daugther use them too when she is practicing at the piano -an electric one- and with her iRiver MP3. I will buy another ATH-M30 just for me.
They are so good, that it is the first product that I comment at amazon even though I am an using amazon almost since the begining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Headphones I've Ever Seen / (Heard)!!
These Audio Technica babies really let the sound in!Outstanding in every respect, IMO!

Listening to movies and CDs through these 'phones is a pleasure.Surround sound effects come through nicely when listening to 5.1-Channel or 2-Channel Surround material, with many subtle surround effects seeping through that you possibly had never heard when listening through your regular speaker system.

The sound reproduction on this product seems very "natural" and undistorted. And not "tinny"-sounding, like can be the case with many different headphone brands.

Extraordinarily comfy, to boot! The ear cups don't pinch, or dig into your head. The padded headband adjusts to fit the biggest (or smallest) of craniums. And they don't make your ears sweat like a nervous politician on Election Day (oh, sorry ... I should have said "perspire").:)

You can wear these things all day and suffer no ill effects on your head/ears. (Well, unless, of course, you lay too heavy on the volume control.)

It *is*, in fact, difficult to keep the volume in the "low"/"restrained" range while using these sonically-pleasing babies. Because they sound so good!

The ATH-M30 is an exceptional product; and a terrific bargain to be sure.

Hard to imagine even $100-plus 'phones giving better performance than these.

4-0 out of 5 stars great sound, great price, good comfort.
I recently purchased a new pair of these for around 50 dollars.Immediately I was pleased with the sound and comfort of these headphones, however, you may have to spend a little time fitting them on your head at first to keep them from hurting your ears.Although they are not terribly uncomfortable to wear for a few minutes, the size of the cups are a bit smaller than most professional headphones, and this makes them a bit uncomfortable for long-term listening as there is pressure on your ears.

Despite the uncomfortable pressure that may occur on the ears, these headphones are actually very comfortable to wear. They sound so good that I want to turn up the volume just to enjoy them more. The sound is clear, the bass is strong and clean but won't drown out the mid-tones or treble. The treble itself is sometimes lacking, but most of the time it isn't a problem. The individual sounds are heard so well with these headphones that if there is any extra noise or flaw in what you are listening to, you'll notice it immediately.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice
I have an older version of this headphone, and use it everyday for hours. It sounds very good, and for the price is very hard to beat for this type of headphone. My only complaint is that my ears hurt if i wear them for more than a few hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neophyte audiophile mighty impressed
After purchasing an iPod mini, I thought I could use much better headphones to test the quality of the aiff files provided by iTunes.I must emphasize that I am not an expert as the other reviewers. When choosing this pair, I read reviews and looked for high quality under 50 bucks. These headphones put my big stereo speakers to shame.I can hear the background singers and instruments I haven't heard before. They sound completely awesome! (no, really, they do). There is a little bit of leak, not much.and they are extremely comfortable and lightweight on the head.I'll be testing them out extensively this weekend while traveling on airplanes. Update on airplane use:they are not noise canceling headphones, but they did block the noise of a few verbally obnoxious passengers, and while volume was cranked up, no one knew how much the tunes were cranked up.My friends that have tried them out call them *amazing*, like a symphony hall.
Around the house, they block out flushing toilets, dishwashers, and those annoying sounds from the kids' room. The cord is super long, so I can keep my iPod in it's dock on the kitchen counter and walk around and cook dinner and clean. And the connector has a strain relief so I know that the cord won't break off from running around.
I also needed headphones to go with my laptop while watching DVDs and listening to music and other computer things.Unlike my other cd headphones, these are in stereo and pick up amazing sounds. Also, they block out the computer sounds of the dvd spinning.
I suppose they weren't made for household use, but they sound so good, that they will keep me happy for a long time, baby. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

These Street Style headphones employ the comfortable and stable behind-the-neck design. They have a spiral headband style, and with their non-slip design, they are ideal for a few laps around the track or for a walk to the corner market. The MDR-G73LPs are a metallic blue color and have a hi-tech, modern style. The behind-the-neck style is very appropriate for urban and casual wear; remember that with this style you can wear a hat while wearing the headphones. The headphones have a folding mechanism which allows them to be stored in a backpack or purse. The MDR-G73LPs were designed for extended wear, and, weighing in at under two ounces, you may indeed forget you are wearing headphones.

Sony has installed several technical features to the headphones to ensure a quality listening experience. The thirty millimeter drive units are large for portable headphones, and deliver deep bass, low distortion and a wide frequency response range (14 - 24,000 Hz). Sony's Acoustic Twin Turbo circuit achieves high sonic output by utilizying sound chamber and duct technology. Neodymium magnets give the headphones maximum energy at a minimal size and weight, while the oxygen-free copper cord provides high conductivity and minimum noise. The gold-plated stereo mini-plug makes sure that sound is transported fully and accurately. The gold-plated treatment also helps resist corrosion and supports the headphones' high conductivity and low noise. The five foot long, single-sided cord is plenty long for active pursuits.

5-0 out of 5 stars These are among my favorite Phones
It's interesting that some people say these are hard to wear. I find them by far the easiest to wear and the most comfortable of the behind-the-neck style. I wonder if they are trying to wear them like traditional phones? These are very light and stay on my ears (with glasses, by the way) better than most of the stiff plastic phones I've used.

I've owned many, many headphones over the years (Koss, Memorx, Panasonic, JVC), and Sony has been the most consistently good sounding brand I've had. The MDR-G73LP phones are no exception. They sound far better than the cheapos that come with virtually all portable devices (including Sony.) They aren't as good as my old MDR-V6 phones, which have been thoroughly abused over, what, about 15 years? And even though those V6's are physically shot, they still sound fabulous!

I recently bought the new sealed bud type phones (Sony), but I like the MDR-G73LP better. The sound is smooth, wide range, deep bass, and all around clean. My only complaint is that they don't seem to be the best FM antenna around. But with a CD player, they are excellent.

I can very highly recommend the MDR-G73LP!

1-0 out of 5 stars hard to get to fit right
These wouldn't even stay on without bending the spring wire.Unfortunatly, the wire is a flat spring steel, and you cannot just bend it without it distorting somewhere else. I spent over an hour trying to find the right way to bend the wire to keep them from just falling off.I got one configuration to work, but only if I did not move my head. They are very lightweight, or at least seem so, since they are usually falling off. I can not attest to the sound quality, as I never got so far as to plug them in.If you buy these, definitely buy a couple of pairs of pliers to assist in the custom fit. You will look really cool with these, no doubt, as you are cruising down the boulevard, constantly fidgeting with them, trying to keep them on your ears. $45 down the toilet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice sound but terrible fit
I am searching online for a replacement of these phones. They are uncomfortable and feel like they'll slide off my ears at any minute.I've tried for a year to use these things. What a waste of money. They just feel awful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best headphones I've ever owned
These are by and large the best headphones I've ever used. I'm a college student, and I have to cram my headphones into my backpack to use them after and between classes. Normal headphones usually break after a couple of weeks of this treatment, and earbuds get lost. But these phones have no rigid parts, just a bendy wire that connects the two cans, so they're extremely durable.

The connector loops behind the back of the head, which means they're great for outdoor use because they won't slip off the top of your head like normal headphones. They stay on by slipping partially behind your ears, so they're not on too tight and do tend to come loose every once in a while during very rough activities like jogging.

I find they give better sound and stay in better than ear buds, and they hurt my ears less than the headphones that clip directly onto the top of your ears.

So, for durability, comfort, and ability to stay in place, I highly reccomend these headphones. Plus, they look really cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great headphones!
I use them for running and other exercise with an MP3 player.I've been through dozens of different styles, all with comfort, quality or usability issues. These are absolutely comfortable, stay in place without applying pressure and have good sound quality. ... Read more
