Plays rights - sounds weak
The Martin Backpacker instruments are very useful for the person who:
1. Wants an instrument that "feels right" - meaning the frets are in the right place, the intonation is accurate, the scale is correct, etc.
2. Wants an instrument that you can literally throw into a duffel back or backpack and carry into remote places. (Many American Servicemen I know took them on deployments.)

The tradeoff is that the teeny-tiny sound-box produces a small, tinny noise that is weak in volume and almost metallic in tone - the closest thing I can think of to describe what it SOUNDS like is one of those old hand-cranked jack-in-the-boxes.

It DOES play right, though, and if you want an instrument that will keep your fingers in shape, is decent to practice on, and you CAN take it anywhere you can sling it over your shoulder - then the Martin Backpacker is right up your alley.

Well worth adding to the guitar collection
Well this will never become your primary guitar but if you're into bringing your guitar with you when you travel this is probably one of the better options.

Technically the sound is a little thin and holding it can be difficult to master. In addition I think most people have a bit of a post-purchase "why did I buy this!" But once you have played it a bit and especially after you have travelled with it I'm sure you will find it to be indispensable. Personally I actually have begun to like the sound of the guitar - it's quite unique and can offer all sorts of nuances if you take the time to find them out. So I often find myself at home using the Martin rather than my `good' guitar.

I have mostly used the guitar when travelling interstate for work and on the odd overseas holiday. Its size and sturdy construction mean it can put up with all sorts of treatment and still provide great sound.I have also have a Yamaha Silent guitar which has been a few places but I always find myself coming back to the little Martin. It feels much nicer to play and is so easy to carry about. Combine this with a good selection of sheet music in PDF on my laptop and I'm pretty much set for any destination.

The only advice I'd offer a new owner is to have a look at the strings. I got some really nice sounds from the guitar using Augustine Blues which were well worth the price. I also met a guy who said that pretty much any Flamenco guitar string was worth trying on the Martin.

Also take the time getting used to using the strap before you go the `surgery' option and start using knee rests or attachable frames. It will feel very strange for quite a while until you get used to how it feels. One word of warning - once you get it right don't let anyone adjust your strap ;o).

Not a good sounding Instument
Even though this guitar is Easy to carry around and travel with and is fun to Play, the sound quality is seriously lacking.My recomendation would Be to get a Baby taylor Guitar instead.

nice gift
i recieved this guitar as a gift from a friend for a favor i did them. at first i was skeptical as to the capability of this guitar. but i was quickly surprised. it has a great sound and very quick action. the ability to play out of an amp really makes this a very versitle little guitar. it is a bit small but that doesn't deter from it's ability. over all a great buy if you can get it.

I've played this guitar in the store, and boy was it fun to play.
Not only was the sound incredible for the size of it; it was so easy to play, and you really had the feeling that you could give it a good hard playing.

Crisp sound, great tone, and very solid.The slim body is sure to please smaller players, and the sound carries more than enough volume.

Great Price
Wow, for the price its impossible not to give this guitar a 5 star rating. This is better than most of those $500 guitars that try to have a nice shape. The design was what caught my eye at the guitar shop, and than i saw the price. The other reviewer said it had bad humbuckers/pickups, but he must have a crappy amp, cause this guitar carried a mean, tuff tone on everything. haha, its not a good idea to play acoustic style songs on this, as i've tried. Truely for the metal-hard rock lovers. But i play mostly Punk, and it gets the job done. You won't find a better guitar, for this price; especially the looks.

you get what you pay for....
....the title says it all. the guitar i received would have been beautiful if it weren't for the two deep scratches and one rather unsightly heavy run in the paint job. i did not receive a pick nor an extra set of steel strings as described, but you should choose your own picks, and i suspect the quality of the included strings as two of them broke during the initial tuning - which i performed with an electronic tuner, as the included "tuner" is actually a pitch pipe and very dificult to use. . . all in all . . . i am not complaining (read the title again). this was the most inexpensive full-size guitar i could find to start out with. after a new set of strings and lots of accesories to complete the package (this is not a complete starter set), i can now hit the lessons for around $100....

....please note, i'm new to guitar so i can't really comment on it's tone quality, and i'm a furniture maker who's acutally looking forward to refinishing this guitar someday, but if you want something closer to perfect, i'd spend a few more dollars.... ... Read more

This guitar DOES have a BIG SOUND for a small price
I was thrilled when my guitar arrived and even more so after I tuned it and began to play.

My guitar is absolutely beautiful. The finish is flawless. And it's got that new guitar smell...ahhhhhh.

It does have a pick guard (that is not shown in the photo on any website or in any catalog) which pleases me. It would be a shame to scratch the surface while strumming with a heavier pick. I read one review on a music vendor's website where the reviewer complained about Takamine and Jasmine printed all over the pick guard. And they were right about that...but I found it very easy to remove all these words by simply peeling off this protective sticker. Dah.

The strings are a little heavier than I like but I'll be changing them in a few weeks anyway.

The sound and craftsmanship is anything but what you would expect from such an affordable guitar and everything you'd expect to pay more for. It has a rich, full bodied sound.

Surprisingly good entry level bass
As an entry bass, I'm giving it 5 stars, because it's a tremendous value.(It doesn't compare at all to a Warwick or Alembic.)

I'm an advanced guitarist (guitarist, not bassist), having played guitar for 15 years, and I decided to buy a cheap bass to play around on.Normally I wouldn't purchase anything under $400, but I heard these were quite good.

This bass gets good tone, especially if you run it through a little compression and equalization.You can go from a gutteral crunch to a bright punch with ease.It has a responsive, sleek neck.The most common problem with low end guitars and basses is that they tend to have distorted, often uncorrectable intonation, but the intonation on this bass was perfect out of the box.

I had to do some set up to get this playing right.Apparently it's common on these.If you buy one and find that the lower 5 frets on the E and A strings tend to buzz, your neck is too straight.Loosen the truss rod a little and that should take care of it.(Be careful with truss rods.You can ruin your neck.If you are very inexperienced, have an experienced friend show you how or pay $20 at a guitar store for a set up.)

The upper frets are quite accessible.I have no problem doing bass solos on this.A nice feature is that it has 24 frets, compared to 20 or less on a typical Fender P-bass. (This also applies to the Squier P-bass, which is probably something you're considering if you're looking at this.I had a Squier electric 13 years ago.It was a piece of junk.)

The bass is also quite attractive.The finish seems durable, and is nicer than what you'd expect from the website image.

Overall, this is a great entry bass, as along as you're willing to set it up.
