122. Yamaha DGX-500AD 88-Note Touch-Sensitive Portable Electronic Keyboard with AC Adapter

Amazon.com Review

The DGX500AD is the top-of-the-line product in Yamaha's new Portable Grand series. This keyboard is very much like the DGX300AD, with almost all functions available on any other Yamaha keyboard, including the Yamaha Educational suite, 619 voices, and a built-in sequencer and built-in floppy drive. The DGX500AD is different from the DGX300AD in that it has 88 piano-size keys (the same number of keys you find on a real piano), and it comes with a sustain pedal and a keyboard stand. Also like the DGX300AD, the DGX500AD is incredibly easy to use despite its massive functionality--and while the DGX500AD is large in size, it weighs just enough to make it readily portable.

Depending on the preference of the user, the DGX500AD may have a few drawbacks. The keys on the DGX500AD are supposed to be "weighted," meaning that the keys will have the feel of real piano keys. However, I found very little, if any, weight at all to these keys. While the piano-size keys are much nicer to play than more inexpensive synthesizer keys, these keys still did not feel like real piano keys. The quality of the speakers was a bit disappointing as well; the speaker quality on the DGX500AD was better than the DGX300AD, but interestingly enough not as good as the DGX200AD. The sound on this keyboard was not very full and had a kind of tinny and weak quality to it.

Overall, the DGX500AD is a good keyboard for the price. If having all 88 keys is not as important to you, I would recommend going for the DGX300AD, with 76 keys, and if you do not need the built-in floppy drive, you may opt for the DGX200AD, also with 76 keys. --Chris Fresolone

3-0 out of 5 stars New Pianist
The DGX-500 (purchased via a company on the internet and not via Amazon)was great for the first few months...( even though it never gave the "grand Piano loudness")..until the right bank of speakers began to exhibit 'fuzzy' sounds with each strike of any key .. no matter what voice is used.I've tried 'everything' I can think of to correct the situation, to no avail.I suppose the only alternative is to purchase external speakers?Would this rectify the problem? Please, if you have information to help, let me know.Presently, I'm heading to Radio Shack to talk to them about this and get their input.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I bought this for my wife. This is most certainly a great product.I do agree however, that the keys are not as weighted as they should be. My wife mentioned that they feel as though they spring back unlike a standard piano.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Instrument!!
A terrific instrument, pound for pound, than any out there for sale. With 88 keys, educational software, many voices, etc. there's nothing better for the money plus you get Yamaha quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value
I was looking for something I could put in my little apartment and be able to move if and when I had to, and I could afford. My girlfriend/roommate was a music major, and thus very picky about the way an instrument feels and sounds. We had our musical choices narrowed down to this keyboard and a digital piano. After playing this instrument in the store, we decided that for the money, you just can't beat it.
This unit runs about half the price of a digital keyboard, and while I agree that the weighting of the keys is not very significant (hence 4 stars out of 5), the sound I think is outstanding. Not only the grand piano sound, but also a good percentage of the voices (out of 614, of course a few of them are subpar).
On top of all this, the lesson feature is wonderful.I don't know how to play piano or read music or anything, but the lesson feature teaches you how to play any of the 100 songs pre-programmed into the keyboard.I've only had it about 3 days, and I'm learning a lot faster than I would have thought.
So if you're looking for an extremely versatile instrument that won't break your bank, this is definitely for you.If you want something that plays just like a piano, then buy a piano. But I can't recommend this product enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent keyboard with a few minor flaws
I had been looking for a piano for about 17 months when I ran across this model, purely by chance, at my local electronics store.I'd been rather frustrated trying to find a keyboard that approximated the look and feel of a real piano and had all 88 keys on it.A real piano for me was out of the question, since I live in an upstairs unit (no elevator) with a tight corner turn to get into the door, and neither me nor my wife could move something so large.

I tell you that you will not get a better deal anywhere than what this model has to offer. Not only does this model have all 88 keys, but the piano sound quality is absolutely outstanding. The rest of the voices...drums, winds, electronic piano, and rhythm sequences (plus hundreds more), all sound realistic enough to provide an excellent mix of sounds for recording.I have no trouble with the various other functions I discovered while playing with this keyboard...chord lessons, music dictionary, rhythm setting, or music database activation. This is an absolutely MARVELOUS keyboard for the price and is great whether you are a beginner just learning or an advanced synth player.

Now the reason it has 4 stars instead of 5.First, I must agree with the reviews I see here that the keys are not as weighted as they could be.Second, the main piano sound, although excellent, is just a bit too soft.I found I had to turn the volume up to 3/4 of max to hear a good semblance of a grand piano sound. This wouldn't be a problem, except the auto-accompaniment will drown out the piano melody if you turn it on, and adjusting the accompaniment volume is a minor pain because it reverts back to its default setting when you turn the unit off. Finally, the pedal included with this keyboard tends to go slightly awry at times because it is not like your typical piano pedal. When I tried to use it, my foot slipped off it occasionally...although that might be because I have a carpet and not a hard floor where the pedal is.

However, buying an extra speaker and a new piano pedal, both readily available from Yamaha, corrected both problems amazingly well.Once I added those, I had as close to a perfect instrument as you could ever hope to have. Now if only I could weight those keys somehow...

Overall, a unit I highly recommend and an excellent buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice keyboard for its price
I bought this keyboard because I wanted to learn how to play the piano. The touch feels more like an electric plaything, rather than a real piano, but for the price it is fine. There is a built-in feature that helps you to learn how to play. First, you choose from a fairly extensive songlist. The first mode allows you to hit any key, but with the proper rhythm. The second modes allow you to practice one hand at a time. The nice thing about this, is that the keyboard will play the other hand for you, so you can still play the piece. Although this is fun, I don't think it's the best way to learn how to play. I bought some adult piano learning books and am plugging away at it. Overall, I'm happy with the keyboard and it will serve me well for learning piano basics. Someday I may upgrade, but I have to prove to my wife that I am serious about playing! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!
I bought this keyboard in april 2004. I have had all kinds of problems with. It simply doesn't work. Period. It comes with a diskette that warns you: don't use it with WIndows XP, which is exactly my case. SO you have to download it from Miditech website. It happens exactly what other reviewers said. In my case I tried to contact Miditech many times over. Lately they've been answering my questions but still NO SOUND!!! DOn't even bother calling Steinberg which is the manufacturer of the Cubasis 3.0 that comes with the keyboard. They simply don't answer the phone. Besides this version of Cubasis is not even recognized by them so you can't register your product. All in all: a $100 bucks on the waste basket.
I'm a total begginer in this field and I wish the makers of these products - both hardware and software - would explain things in more details. Besides if you go to the Help menu and type: troubleshooting you get: nothing, nada, rien!!! Which means: don't bother me!

1-0 out of 5 stars This product made me cry.
Bad purchase, didn't come with 9v power sulpy or usb cable, drivers cd was a bust and literely there was a screw loose inside.

1-0 out of 5 stars PROBLEMATIC FROM THE START...
I purchased this keyboard in early December 2004.I was hoping to use it simply to enter MIDI data into my computer for music publishing purposes. The keyboard comes with a software sequencing package (Cubisis 3.0); a CD with drivers for Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP; and a USB connection cable.A 9-Volt power supply, MIDI cable, and sustain pedal are NOT included.

The keyboard itself appeared to be very well made.It is a solid plastic body construction with good key action. The display was a three-digit display.

The user manual (obviously translated from the native German) was not helpful. It offered little more than what someone who has a basic working knowledge of MIDI would already know.

I am running Windows XP on a desktop computer. The driver for the keyboard crashed my computer every time I tried to install it.I downloaded an updated driver from the manufacturer's website (www.miditech.de), which had the same result.

I returned the keyboard after contacting their United States dealer with still no resolution of my driver issues.I would not recommend this keyboard.

Designed by Dave Smith, founder of Sequential Circuits and long-time music technology innovator, the 4-voice polyphonic Poly Evolver combines some of his best creations into slick-looking 61-key keyboard. Start with the oscillators: two real analog oscillators featuring Sawtooth, Triangle, Saw-Triangle, and Pulse meet two digital wavetable generators with a choice of 96 waveforms (like the Prophet VS). You can hard sync the analog oscillators (like Prophet 5) and link the digital ones with either FM or Ring Mod for a wide pallette of sounds. You also get an audio input that can run through the effects and filter to your heart's content. Although the higher-priced Casio wk-3000 has a good reputation, THIS keyboard (Casio CTK-593), I find is inferior to the Yamaha keyboard of the same price both in the sound and the way the notes resonate and the way the notes sound when played together or when you gradually move from one note to the other.I cannot find a sustain button onboard in case you don’t have a sustain pedal. And there’s no “portable grand” button like on the Yamaha.Instead, I have to manually push several buttons every time I turn it on to get the setting I want. However, when I was cleaning my Yamaha, I rubbed so hard (sideways) on the keys to clean them, 5 of them stopped working. So I will tolerate this Casio since it is touch sensitive and OK for learning. If I learn to play well however, I will upgrade to an 88 key weighted keyboard.I slightly prefer the touch of the keys of the Casio against the Yamaha because the Yamaha seemed to require a softer touch which made me feel totally odd on a real piano (once you‘re used to playing with a softer touch). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars And I don't even like instuments.
For some reason, I have this keyboard in my room, when I don't even play it. But the first few weeks I had, I discovered a great amount of stuff on it.

-DJ- you can play around with lots of voices and maybe even pretend you're a DJ!

-Touch- I don't really like this option, but I know that many people do because they like the feel of the grand piano.

-YES!- What that is is a program that helps you play 100 different songs with the help of the LCD display.

-Voices- Tons of voices, most of them sounding lifelike. There are even sound effects, like applause, helicopter, and the ocean.

-Recording- Record anything you want, and store 5 songs. You can easily record over anything.

-Metrophone- With the metrophone, you can set the beat of the song your playing to learn to play steadily.

-Volume- The volume ain't no button. You can manually set it to precisely anything, like a good home stereo.

-MIDI- Get yourself a MIDI cable and connect it to your pc. You can send your songs to the computer.

-Harmony- There are many touches you can add to the voices, like a large or small room and many others.

-Styles- Not the best styles in the world, but play your songs to a background tune.

This is an incredible keyboard especially for beginners, but not too much for pros. I suggest getting a more expensive model for pros, but they know what they're doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars from the piano player
I've had a casio CTK-541 and a yamaha psr260, but this is the one i wanted all along. I liked it because of its song recorder, sound effects, voices, etc.... When i got it, i couldn't wait to go home and try it out. It sounded so real that it felt like i was on stage. The yamaha education suite 2 helped me learn all 100 songs. This keyboard is worth 100 times more than its price

4-0 out of 5 stars not included
We bought the psr280 at another store. They didn't mention that we needed an adaptor. They did however tell us about the headphones we wanted, and then sold us the wrong set.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Gift Ever
I haven't slept for days. This is a great keyboard for the money! More voices, songs, and styles than one needs. The voices sound almost pro-quality. Keep in mind what the other reviewer wrote - you need to buy the adapter if it is notthe AD model.

4-0 out of 5 stars More features than you can make sense of
A very good basic keyboard with lots of strange features beyond the traditional 100 rhythms and 100 instruments. The most interesting is a piano training course, but it to date has been too complex to figure out. After trying out lots of others in this <($) price range, this seems to be the best quality for the money.

Good features:

- Very close to full sized keys

- Excellent basic sounds. The piano sounds like a piano.

- Basic features are easy to use.

Gripes:

- Instructions are not complete enough given the volume of features

- If you buy this at most other stores (which I did), they foolishly don't include an AC adaptor. The Amazon version (280AD) does. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Even If You Already Know How to Play Keyboard!!!
I've been taking piano lessons for a few years, and I still love this toy. You can change the sound of the keyboard almost a hundred times. A few of them, like the piano and violin, sound the same, though. My favorite feature of this toy is the part where you can learn how to play a song. You can choose from songs you've probably heard of. There is a variety of songs, including Let It Be, If You're Happy and You Know it Clap Your Hands, and Moonlight Sonata. You simply choose a song, and the keys light up to show you which notes to press. The keys also light up when you press and note.

Overall, I think this toy is great. You can adjust the volume settings, so mom won't have to yell at you to keep it down. You should definitely buy (or save up to buy- it's expensive!) this keyboard. ... Read more
