Amazon.com Review

The Yamaha PSR170AD is a dream-come-true for piano students. It would be hard not to learn at least basic keyboard skills while using this model. The user-friendly LCD display shows permanent bass and treble clefs and has a small virtual keyboard. As a song played or we plunked at the keyboard, the notes were instantly displayed. At first we felt that this was a novelty feature, but as we moved into the lessons, we could see that it can be helpful to see the staff and notes.

While we were playing random chords to see what they looked like on the bass clef, we noticed that the keys are not sensitive to touch. We could bang on the keys like Jerry Lee Lewis or caress them like Yanni and the volume never changed. Though this may throw an experienced keyboardist for a loop, it might also be useful to the novice, who won't have to worry about volume control.

The PSR170AD is equipped with the Yamaha Education Suite feature. This feature walks you through seven lessons at your own pace. The lessons are a blur at first, but the fact that the keyboard will repeat them as many times as you want allows you to run them over and over again until you become comfortable. The lessons can be done using the 100 voices and styles that come on the PSR170AD. This was particularly enjoyable, as we would have been bored while practicing without a little variety. It comes with 100 prerecorded songs--some we never heard before, some we can't forget. You can play along with any of them anytime.

Yamaha lets you have fun away from the lessons and learning with the DJ Mode. The DJ Mode has groovy voice and music samples you can use to play along with a prerecorded funky dance riff or to create your own. If you're like us, it may take you a while to get back to the serious side of the keyboard. As a MIDI compatible keyboard, the PSR170AD can connect to a sequencer orcomputer via MIDI cables (sold separately), both of which can record musical performances from the keyboard and then play them back using the instrument voices on the PSR170AD. This is great for adding it to an ensemble and using the keyboard to lay down tracks while recording.

Overall, this keyboard impressed us most by how well designed it was for the music student. It comes with just enough functions for learning the basics and not so many that you get bogged down in menus. The keyboard isn't all about learning, though. We plugged it in right out of the box and had a toe-tapping good time. --Brian Vandiver

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
THIS KEYBOARD ROCKS!!!!!!

WE have had this keyboard for 2 years and it is still as good as new!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars good piano for beginner
arrived in less than a week w/ free shipping, was able to put a $50 certificate towards it so was a steal, never played a piano before, learned to play beethoven's 9th in less than a day, pretty easy to learn, could use better instructions teaching what all the chords are (esp if you are just starting out), takes good time learning w/ the electronic lessons, same volume of sound for whatever strength pressed of key could be annoying once you learn what you are doing, but for 50 bucks less & if you are a beginner that may not make a huge difference, all in all, good piano, i recommend it

1-0 out of 5 stars no good, a ...
okay this keyboard does not give you the name of the songs your are playing and the eduation suite is [bad] b/c it doesn't teach you how to play your own songs. in fact you can't even learnto play the songs programed ithe computer b/c the keys go so incredibly fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music Magic
I bought this Yamaha as a gift for our daughter-in-law's birthday.Had to try it out before I took it to her and it sounds as good as my big Yamaha Clavinova.(By the way, I bought the Clavinova in 87 and it's been faultless.)Our duaghter-in-law had been using a small keyboard, was speechless when she saw what we'd brought her!Another thing that amazed me was how quickly it arrived. Thanks for making the givers and the birthday both very happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars oh yeah, get jiggy
Yo, let me just say that this keyboard is off the shelf, hee zee, chain, or whatever.I plugged it in right out the box and was instantly comfortable with this product. If you are new to the music world and want some lessons/foundation, then you will want to buy this one over much of the other keyboards available. It has a great learning program that even the most non-musically inclined individual will be able to benefit from. Also, there are tons of songs stored on the thing that you can learn to play.Good stuff, go buy one. ... This is the best keyboard for the price!Great for playing around with and learning piano.

4-0 out of 5 stars good 4 beginners
my parents bought me this keyboard when i was 10 to practice on,, and now im 14 and playing advanced level, so its not much use to me anymore because i need more octaves.. but i learned to play on it, its the only keyboard i had and it,, . well anyway,, if you're a beginner and want something to practice on and dont have space 4 a real piano, this is the thing 4 u:) the only downside is that u have to buy batteries if u dont have the adaptor:(

5-0 out of 5 stars Too Good For Children!
My friend has this keyboard that I love madly since I have been playing piano for four years.Even though I am only nine years old, I would reccomend this for children seven to twenty. This keyboard has everything that a professional keyboard in a studio would have.Since my father will be purchasing this product for Christmas, I know the keyboard and reccomend it for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
My father bought me this keyboard for Christmas which I love so badly! My friend had this keyboard and I loved it so, I got it and I reccomend it for you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but decent
The keyboard is alright considering that in was very inexpensive compared to others. After a while, it does get sort of boring.I have had this keyboard for about a year, and you eventually get tired of hearing the same thing over and over. The only real feel of diversity you could get from this machinery is if you have a home music studio on your pc.Then, if you hook up your keyboard, you can add to the diversity of your music program.Considering the money spent, I would say that it is a very decent buy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars another trick to raise the volume
I used another trick to raise the voice volume. Use the DUAL voice function, and set the dual voice be the same as the main voice. In this way, you DOUBLED the volume. Of course, the price is no more different dual voice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Certainly good enough!
OK, I haven't tried the Casios that some rave about, but I do know this...the keyboard does offer an adequate volume level (particularly how I play). If you want more volume: 1-Try turning the touch response off. 2-Go into the function menu and turn the M.Volume control UP.I'm certain that the naysayers didn't read into the manual.I admit that there's not a ton of additional sound, but it's set at "104" from the factory and can go to "127" if you choose to.That's because Yamaha has given the unit some "play" so you can raise or lower the sound to match other built-in settings. Also when a "song" is playing there's extra sounds like bass, cymbal etc., so how much can you expectof 12watts, total?3-Go to radio shack, get the right adapter and plug it in to you stereo (or I've read about some adding inexpensive PC speakers for $30-$60).One or all of the above will do the trick.

It's got a great range of voices. The piano sounds great as well as others like guitar, church organ, etc. There's 600 to choose from.I advise the 202 model which will include a sustain pedal, AC power adapter, some 'phones and an extended warranty.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough to stand by itself
I've always been loyal to Yamaha keyboards, so when I decided to purchase a new (consumer-level) keyboard, I figured I'd continue to be loyal to the tradition. Well, after having dropped by the local Sam Ash music store, it seems like it's going to be the end of that tradition. As much as I continue to love the sounds that Yamaha offers in its keyboards, the power that this one delivers, along with the design it comes with (don't know... things are just oddly placed, in my opinion), made me drop my wish for another Yamaha, considering my budget max of $300 for a keyboard these holidays. Instead, I will be buying the Casio WK-3000 Professional Series 76 Key Digital Recording Studio Styled Keyboard, which came out in late 2003.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall, a couple of disappointments
Good overall, a couple of disappointments

Overall the sound from this keyboard is good.I had to buy separate speakers (went for some decent quality computer speakers) because the built-in speakers were a little disappointment.

There is a good list of voices and songs, but its hard to find specifics in the list because they are not alphabetical, so every time I want to play a specific song or use a particular voice, I need to spin through all of the lists.

Haven't tried all the connectivity features (to a computer) but it seems relatively simple.

3-0 out of 5 stars I returned it!
The DGX series do not allow the piano voice to be played loud enough; it can only be heard at slightly less than an average volume when volume dial is turned to "max."The problem is that I found myself playing harder to get the touch sensitivity to compensate.I had to decide whether to get an amplifier or speakers, or to return it.The positive reviews about this keyboard are all true.I only gave it three stars because of the volume problem.Every DGX model (200, 300, and 500) have low volume output for the grand piano voice. If you have speakers or an amplifier, than this keyboard is worth every penny.Beware that many other buyers have had the same complaint. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING DEAL FOR ALL SKILL LEVELS!
I just recently got my Williams Etude, and I love it. It's comfortable, has a variety of features, and has a lovely sound.

For reference, I am a classically trained pianist. I am 24 years old, and have been playing since I was 5.

The only complaint I have is that the keys aren't as touch sensitive as I would have preferred, but this feature is adjustable. Although, if you are playing a piece that jumps from pp to ff, you might have a problem executing that for it to sound the way it's written.

But all in all, this piano is an outstanding deal! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Yamaha EZ-20 is a great starting place for budding musicians. It's a versatile tool for the beginning musician, offering a variety of musical sounds, songs, educational activities, and built-in accompaniments.

The EZ-20 is first a synthesizer. There are 100 different instrument sounds, from pianos to strings to guitars to drums. With a little imagination, the sounds are quite realistic. While 100 sounds seem like a lot, many peoplemay outgrow them and yearn for more. Since the EZ-20 is a MIDI keyboard, it can be connected to a computer via MIDI cables (sold separately), which can record musical performances from the keyboard and then play them back using the instrument voices on the EZ-20. However, the EZ-20 is not a General MIDI keyboard, which means that if you were to connect it to a computer, General MIDI files (a standard of most MIDI files in educational software and of those available on the Internet) will not sound correct (i.e., the instrumentation will be wrong).

The EZ-20 has 100 songs including classical tunes, world music, and holiday pieces. Certain sections of the songs can be repeated, and the tempo and accompaniment instruments can easily be changed. The EZ-20 uses thesesongs to teach the user musical skills through three lessons.

The lesson types installed on the EZ-20 are timing, waiting, and minus one. All lessons can be done with only the left hand, only the right hand, or both hands together. In the timing lesson, the song plays and the student pressesany note in proper time. In the waiting lesson, the EZ-20 holds the accompaniment until the student plays the correct notes. In the minus one lesson, the student plays the proper notes in the correct time.

An evaluation function gives a grade for each lesson. Colored lights above the keys as well as a staff display will help the student identify the correct keys. A dictionary function shows the student the different chord types on the keyboard and on the display staff. All these educational activities are very entertaining, and by doing them, the student will pick up some rudimentaryskills that may help in the further study of music.

One hundred accompaniment styles will bring out the budding improviser and composer. The EZ-20 plays a bass line, drums, and chords (chords are optional), while the user is free to create a melody.

To use the EZ-20 is exactly as the name implies, easy. Unpacking is easy: connect the adapter to the keyboard, plug in the adapter, turn the keyboard on, and play! There is plenty to experiment with before even opening up the manual. The EZ-20 is also a fun keyboard to use. With a whole band of instruments and accompaniments at a finger's touch, everyone will be surprised at how fast andhow effortlessly they can make music!

The EZ-20 has one other limitation: the keys are not touch sensitive. No matter how hard or how soft the user plays the keys, they all play at exactly the same volume. A dynamic change in volume can only be attained by raising and lowering the volume knob.

Overall, the EZ-20 is a good instrument for perhaps a young beginning musician. The limits of the sounds and lack of touch sensitivity keep the keyboard simple and extremely easy to use. If you're a bit more serious about playing the keyboard, investing a little more money can return many more features in amore powerful keyboard like Yamaha'sEZ-30AD or the PSR-340AD.--Chris Fresolone

  • Easy to use

Amazon.com Review

If you are looking to buy a first keyboard at a reasonable price, try the Yamaha PSR260AD on for size. It's uncomplicated and fun to play, and it might just help you develop music skills. The PSR260AD has 100 voices ranging from pianos to trumpets to drums. One hundred accompaniments, from twistto fusion, can be mixed with the voices. As a MIDI-compatible keyboard, the PSR260AD can connect to a sequencer or computer via MIDI cables (sold separately), both of which can record musical performances from thekeyboard and then play them back using the instrument voices on the PSR260AD.After a while, though, 100 voices will probably seem limiting to most users.

The PSR260AD is not a General MIDI keyboard, which means that if you connect it to a computer, General MIDI files (a standard of most MIDI files in educational software and of those available on the Internet) will not sound correct--the instrumentation will be wrong.

One feature on the PSR260AD that most people (especially children and teenagers) will enjoy is the DJ. Pressing the button shaped like a vinyl record resets the keyboard for playing special DJ songs and voices. There are orchestra hits, samples of real voices singing phrases such as "one more time" and "Get up!" and a variety of scratches. There is even a DJ game programmed into the keyboard that helps users develop rhythm skills. One hundred other songs of various styles are also included that are fun to play and are used in the three lessons offered by the PSR260AD.

The lessons can all be done with left hand alone, right hand alone, or both hands together. In the timing lesson, the song plays and the student presses any note in the proper time. During the waiting lesson, the PSR260AD holds theaccompaniment until the student plays the correct notes. And in the minus one lesson, the student plays the proper notes in the correct time. An evaluation function gives a grade for each lesson. A staff display and keyboard displayhelp the student identify the correct keys, while animated clapping hands help the student visualize the rhythm. A dictionary function shows the different chord types on the display staff. These educational activities are very entertaining, and by doing them, the student may pick up rudimentary skills that will help in the further study of music.

The PSR260AD is an easy keyboard to use, even for a small child. It is lightweight (11.7 lbs.) even though it has built-in speakers. The buttons are all colorful and clearly marked, and all of the accompaniments, voices, and song styles are printed right on the keyboard. Most of the functionality is so intuitive and simple, you may never need to take the manual out of the shrink-wrap!

The PSR260AD is a fun keyboard to play, but it is mostly a learning tool and creative toy. It will provide many hours of entertainment for younger users, and it may very well inspire them to study music. --Chris Fresolone

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent decision!
Buying this keyboard is an excelent decision. I have one who uses my little son for practicing his keyboard lessons. Considering all the features this keyboard includes, I am sure he could continue using it during several years as his musical habilities increases. Additionally you should consider buying a keyboard stand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy
It took me months to pick out this keyboard and I am very happy with the choice.I have had other keyboards and actually gave them away because I was so unhappy with the sound quality...they just weren't "right".As hard as I would try to "get used to" them, it was impossible and actually had an irritating effect on me.This keyboard is wonderful - the sounds of the instruments are beautiful and correct.

If you are just learning, the lessons are great. The song book they send you is written for instruction also - with a little practice you will be on your way.

4-0 out of 5 stars No built-in sequencer
Just a note after I received this keyboard from Amazon - despite what the Amazon page says, this keyboard does not have a built-in sequencer to record your own songs. For that you'll have to pay a bit extra and get the PSR280 61-Note keyboard.

Otherwise, the keyboards seems solid, the majority of the sounds are realistic and the speakers sound great.

5-0 out of 5 stars This keyboard has more feature than you can count!
Well, what can I say this keyboard is awesome!Alright, I'll list a few.To start off with, I learned alot from this keyboard. In a little over a week, i learned how to play to music. In fact, after I finish quickly typing this review, I'm going to go upstairs and play it some more.A great thing about this is all the songs and voices. There are a tiny bit over 100 voices on this thing, and this includes guitar, harp, trombone, and a ton of other instruments you come across alot, and some that you don't hear often, such as strings, banjo, accordion, pipe organ, and some they just made up that plain sound gnarly.
There are many songs too, about 80; and like voices, this has some common songs, Amazing Grace, Home Sweet Home, Livin La Vida Loca, Yankee Doodle, Deck the halls, and some uncommon songs that are still cool, Dancing, The Cookoo, GreenSleeves, and others.
Something neat for begginers is the option to teach you songs, in fact it has 4 different ways for each hand, and 1 for both, which is like a final test.
There also is a dictionary, where you push keys, and it tells you the note's letter.
One of my favorite options is the DJ mode, where it has lots of record sratches, and "Oh, Yeah"s, and other stuff you might hear in rap/punk.
You can even have background sounds to help you play the style. To name a few, It can play pop, hard rock, 70s disco, and many, many more.
You also can play on a drum kit, with all the drum stuff, and more.
If you get a keyboard, get this one. It's radalicious. As I said before, those I said are only a FEW of the options. Yup, just a tiny fragment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Keyboard
The sound is much better than you would expect in a keyboard this price!100 instrument sounds and some of them need just a little imagination to tie them to the real world instrument, but they are fun and the piano sounds really are quite good. The touch-sensitive feature works very well and is a real plus.I thought this instrument would come with a sustain peddle, but it does not; you can order one for another 20$.As a starter, before spending big money on a real piano for my daughter who is taking piano lessons, it is a great deal, and the whole family has had fun with it.Don't count on the included music or lessons to be of much use, though, they are too difficult for a beginner.Fortunately, Amazon has about a zillion beginner piano books, so maybe you would want to order one with the keyboard if you are just starting out. ... Amazon.com Review

Yamaha's EZ30AD portable keyboard is geared for the beginning musician. It's easy to use, powerful, inexpensive, and educational. With 600 different sounds, 100 accompaniment styles, 200 songs, a built-in sequencer, and guided piano lessons, the EZ30AD comes loaded with as many features as a new car.

The 600 sounds range from pianos to clarinets to drums to special effects. The EZ30AD is a General MIDI compatible keyboard, which means that when it's connected to a computer--via the MIDI ports using MIDI cables (sold separately)--the EZ30AD will correctly play General MIDI files (a standard of most MIDI files in educational software and of those available on the Internet).

Add an accompaniment to the sound that you are already playing, and you immediately have a whole band at you fingertips. The EZ30AD can supply drums, bass, chords, and other instruments, freeing you to be the star musician of the group. The sequencer allows you to record your song. It works very much like a multitrack cassette recorder. You can first record one instrument--a bass, for instance. Then add another instrument, such as a guitar, while you're listening to your first track. If the guitar track is not quite right, then you can record it again without changing the bass part. The sequencer is a great tool; however, you can only save up to five songs on the keyboard.

The 200 songs are fun to listen to, but the EZ30AD also wants you to learn how to play them. There are three lesson types on the EZ30AD: timing, waiting, and minus one. All lessons can be done with left hand alone, right hand alone, or both hands together. In the timing lesson, the song plays and the student presses any note in the proper time. In the waiting lesson, the EZ30AD holds theaccompaniment until the student plays the correct notes. In the minus one lesson, the student plays the proper notes in the correct time. An evaluation function gives a grade for each lesson.

Colored lights above the keys and a staff display will help the student identify the correct keys. A dictionary function shows the student chord types on the keyboard and on the display staff. All these educational activities are very entertaining, and by doing them, the student will pick up rudimentary skills that may help in the further study of music.

The keys on the EZ30AD feel a little flimsy, so try not to play them too hard. The keys are also touch sensitive, which means that the harder you strike the key, the louder it will sound. Touch-sensitivity allows for greater control over how your music sounds.

The EZ30AD is lightweight, yet it has speakers built in, so you don't have to get an amplifier. A built-in headphone jack lets you keep your musical mistakes to yourself. It is hard to find many downsides with the EZ30AD.

If you become more serious about music, you will probably want more keys than the 61 on the EZ30AD, and you will want more sounds. (You can never have enough sounds!) If you really want to use the built-in sequencer, you'll find the five-song memory limiting. A keyboard like the href="/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004YAHG/${0}">Yamaha PSR-340 has a sequencer and the ability to store songs on a floppy disk.

The EZ30AD is a great quality keyboard for the price. The variety of sounds, the ability to record songs, and the educational lessons make the EZ30AD a worthwhile package. --Chris Fresolone

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes it fun to learn!
I really like the Yamaha EZ30!It makes it fun to learn how to play the paino.I also bought a book to learn how to play.I started with the book first, slowly playing things like "Jingle Bells" and "Tom Dooley".

After a couple hours with the book, I was looking through the songs included on the EZ30.One of them was the Peanuts theme, which I've always wanted to learn.

I couldn't believe how easy it was to play with the help of Yamaha's YES3 technology. After only 15-30 minutes I was able to keep up a decent tempo and it sounded great with all the background music.

If you've ever dreamed of learning to play the paino like I did, order this product and start playing --you'll love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beginners Dream Come True!
The EZ30 is without a doubt the best keyboard choice whether
you're a beginner or an experienced player.Benefits for
the beginning player include the guidelights, which allow
you to play any of the programmed songs right out of the
box, which is highly gratifying; and the YES 3 system.

The YES 3 teaching system is the real deal. FINALLY a
sorely needed training tool - using both hands together.
YES 2 and most other keyboard brands teach right hand
and left hand parts, and leave it to the student to
put them together.That's horrendously frustrating.
This keyboard teaches right hand, left hand, and then
both hands together, which makes this teaching system
complete and very easy.

Other keyboards I tried prior to this purchases were the
PSR280 and the Casio Magic Light Keyboard. The Casio is
fun and easy, but the quality of the sounds (voices) are
not good.It sounds like squeezing a goat. The piano
voice is fine though, and the keyboard is fun, but not

for anyone with the need for seriously clean/true sounds.
The Casio also only teaches RH/LH, but not both together.

The PSR280 is a fine keyboard, but not for a beginner.
The tiny LCD display will not be of any help, unless you
enjoy being frustrated. The YES 2 system is difficult, and
again only teaches RH/LH, but not both together.
If you're an experienced player, you'll find the sound quality
to be superior, as the Yamaha can be depended on for that.

The EZ30 guidelights can be turned off easily, if you
don't need them or want them on.It is also Midi
compatible, which opens the world to you regarding
choices of songs you want to add.You will need to
purchase a cable and software seperately, but having
done so, ANY midi song can then be played on the EZ30
and will light up for you as well. What more can you
ask?It really has it all.

For the more experienced player, there are a large
variety of voices and options available to be able to
compose to your hearts delight, giving your creativity
free reign. It does have a build in mixer/recorder,
and other memory functions.

In short, this keyboard can be as easy as pie for a
beginner, or as sophisticated as the user needs it to be.
The sound quality is excellent. It comes with a music
book and the AC adapter. You simply can't go wrong with
this keyboard.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! I can play!!!
Amazing keyboard from Yamaha. I have always wanted to play the piano and now with this, I just follow the lights and I'm actually playing the 100 demo songs. And I can download my favorite MIDI songs from the NET and the lights work with them 2. This keyboard also has 600+ other musical instrument voices to use and I'm now thinking of going out to a local lounge and make some extra $$$ on the weekends. LOL! And I just discovered the 6 track recording studio feature included in the keyboard so I can record my tunes. Excellent keyboard for a beginner like me and for someone that has played for years!!! ... Read more
