If it's all you can afford...
These are not the greastest sounding cymbals in the world, but for the price you're probably not going to find another pair of 14" hats new. If you live in or near a big city you could probably find a decent set of used Ziildjians or Sabians or other quality cymbals for not too much more, but the beginner starting out in a rural area much have more of a problem.

These cymbals are supplied (along with a 16" crash) with Pearl's Rhythm Traveler set, and a lot of drummers- like me- sell these off cheap and replace them with better cymbals. If you'e really poverty stricken, you may just be able to pick up a set of these really cheaply. ... Read more

great for you first REAL pair of hi hats
I bought these about 3 years ago, and I've loved them ever since. I've seen the standard AA series sabian hi hats on many profession drummers sets. I use them for every genre.. from punk, to pop and jazz.. even some latin and country... etc..etc..


next to that, GREAT in studio hats.they require a tad bit of eqing but man.. they got some real presence to em.

Positively great all around hi-hat
I mostly use 15" Zindjian Master Sound hi-hats (ASIN B0002I6HIO), but got this pair bundled with a high-end Zildjian cymbal pack. I'm extremely impressed with the sound across the full range of hi-hat work, from basic timekeeping to open and closed work.This pair has a wonderful "chick" sound, and in partially open position produces an amazing swoosh when you ride it with 16th notes or triplets.
