5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME LITTLE SET
OK, We dont know much about drums in our house so I can only really speak of the quality here...I originally bought one of those cheapo sets (American Idol) for my son from Toys-R-Us. It was complete junk that broke the very first day. We returned that and then found this on sale.We paid very close to the same amount for the toy one as this set. This is amazingly sturdy and well built, There is absolutely no comparison. PLease, dont waste your time on the cheapo sets, even if its just for a beginner like my son. It is so nice to have something of quality finally. Toys are made so cheaply these days, but this will not disappoint you because it is definitely NOT a toy, it is just great! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good toy for drum enthusiasts who want to learn
I love drums and rythim so I decided to learn how to play drums. I decided to buy something not to expensive nor too big so that it would not became a problem if I got disappointed during the learning process. Well, I have this set for one month now and I'm satisfied with it and it had served it purpose which is to initiate myself in the art of drumming. However, I must warn you, it's a toy, do not be fool by it having pedals and all, the product will not give you the real feeling that more professional drum sets can give. I'm already thinking about buying a serious equipment, but it won't be until Ifinished my basic learning phase ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Son Loved It!
My son Andrew, who formerly took drum lessons and still loves to tap on any and everything, was so overjoyed with this digital drum set!The many sounds that can be assigned to a pad kept him interested and motivated!I am so glad that I made this purchase, as a few people had said it's not the same as drums. While that may be true, it still provides anyone interested in drumming the opportunity to be creative and enhance their drumming skills!

3-0 out of 5 stars this is good for "silent practices"
This item is definitely good when living in a house with others, and you can practice different rudiments on it, but there are no digital cymbals or a digital bass. The fell to the "drums" isn't the greatest either, but they do do the job.there are a bunch of different sound effects on this I'd never be able to pull off with the real drum set I have, which ameks me like it.So again, I think Yamaha for making this, it kept me from quitting the drums, and now my family and I get along together because there is no noise factor. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Good Drum Set for Display/Prop Purposes ONLY.
I received this drum set, brand new in its box,on 4/8/05 .The metal pieces for the set were oxidized and rusted. Two screws were missing. One adjusting bolt for the floor tom fell off immediately. The cymbals that come with this drum set are worse than trash can lids. The drum heads are all single ply and produce horrible sound. The outer rim of the bass drum has a defect which leaves any replacing head (I've tried three) with a crease no matter how the head is tightened. The set is made in China and is shipped in a box with the drum heads on the bottom and the set on top of them. The pedals for the hi-hat and the bass drum leave much to be desired. If I had prior knowledge of the condition of this brand of set, I would have undoubtedly chosen another.I find this particular set to be sub-par in all aspects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
The Upbeat MX500 set is an excellent set of drums for the price. They're perfect for the beginner, casual drummer or suitable, in my opinion, to play gigs. The sound of the drums are deep and resonant and the hardware seems to be well engineered. Plus, if you're in need of everything....cymbals, throne, sticks, and drum key.....it's all in one package. The only changes I'm making are add a Zildjian 20" ride, modify the existing cymbal into a sizzle crash and add a cowbell. I rate the drums excellent for the money and rate Vintage Drum Company 100% for their friendly, efficient business practices. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The junior kit I recommend
I'm frequently asked to recommend a good beginner's drum kit, and this is the one I recommend for youngsters in the 3-10 year range. My reasons are:

    - this kit is constructed to be a serious instrument, unlike the toy quality of most junior kits.It sounds like a real drum kit, and it plays like one, albeit a scaled down one.

    - the hardware, including the ever important bass drum and high-hat pedals, is solid.Believe me, nothing is more frustrating to any drummer, young or old, than pedals that stick or bind. The ones that come with this kit work well and will withstand a lot of abuse.

    - sound quality of each of the drums is impressive. These drums sound like their larger counterparts, so the young drummer can easily develop his or her own sound on this kit, and retain it when they outgrow it and move to a bigger kit.

The only thing wrong with this kit - and it is universal among all junior kits - is the poor quality cymbals. To Verve's credit they did make sure that the cymbal sizes where proporational to the drums.

This kit is also available in red (ASIN B0002JFXOW) and black (ASIN B0002JFXNI).

I strongly recommend getting a copy of "Getting Started on Drums Featuring Tommy Igoe" (ASIN B00005UV69) to go with this (or any other) kit. It will show the yound drummer how to set up and configure their kit, as well as some important basics and a few easy grooves they can start with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good sounding drum machine.
I bought the DD-35 machine last year, It has a great digital drum sound..I play it through my head phones along with my cd player.BUT!...be warned..This machine startes to short out after about six weeks of steady playing!..I returned it to the music store for another, several weeks later the same thing. Then I ordered one from amazon,I discovered the only way to over-come this problem was to remove the rubber drum pads and place them on a SEPARATE playing platform...that way the electronics don't take a banging and short out..I had to lenthen the wires from the drum machine to another playing board. but now it should last many years this way...Yamaha should design this machine with a separate playing surface. But all and all..a good sounding drum machine. So with all that being said..it really deserves only a couple stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice gift for a budding musician
I bought this for my 18 year old brother who is learning to play the guitar, and I've gotten nothing but positive feedback from home where he and my other younger siblings have been having a good time learning to play the drums.

I took 1 star away because I was hoping it could be used as a drum machine, but apparently it stores less than a minute of performance, making it inappropriate for a single person to play both the drums and guitar, and it has limited drum machine functionality. Still, it has a high fun to price ratio, and I was glad to give such a well appreciated gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Fidgety Teen!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing sound and quality - some issues
If you are looking for a second kit for small gigs, or a first drum kit give this one serious consideration.

Sound: even with stock heads each drum has the perfect balance of warmth, projection and tone.I always replace stock heads on new drum kits, but after a first tuning I discovered that the bass drum and snare drum heads that came with the set were more than adequate. I did replace the batter-side heads on the two toms with medium weight Remo FiberSkyn heads (ASIN B0002F7J52 for the 10" mounted tom and ASIN B0002F7J5W for the suspended 13" tom). My motivation for replacing those two heads was to get a warmer, more subdued sound for jazz. The stock heads on the toms are more than sufficient for rock and project a lot of sound if that is the style of music you play.

Construction: the quality of the drums and hardware is amazing. This kit is noticably superior in every way to my Tama Stagestar kit, and considering that Tama is one of the top brands that is saying a lot.The shells are maple lined and have heavy duty hardware. The snare drum is one of the highest-quality snares I have had the pleasure of playing in quite some time.It tunes perfectly, has a 20-strand snare, and projects a bigger sound than any 12" snare drum I've ever played - it can hold its own with many 14" snare drums.

It comes with a cymbal stand that is better than the one that came with my Tama, and the bass pedal and hi-hat work smoothly. The bass pedal in particular has features I appreciate, such as the ability to make all adjustments with a drum key instead of requiring a hex wrench for adjusting cams. This pedal - a single chain drive type - also comes with a full bottom floorplate and a dual sided beater, which are features that "cheap" kits do not have.

The snare drum stand, like the cymbal stand and hi-hat, is double-braced and as good as anything made by Tama or Pearl. Moreover, this kit comes with memory locks for the tom holders, cymbal and hi-hat stands, and the snare stand. Those are nice touches that one usually only finds in high-end kits.

One final thing to love is the finish, which is beatuifully done in a natural wood decor that adds visual beauty to this kit.

The following are some issues I have with the kit: the 16x16 bass drum is difficult to tune. This drum is a floor tom tom that has been converted into a bass drum by adding spurs, a riser and tom holder. There is nothing inherently wrong with the drum itself, but any square bass drum (same depth and diameter) will present tuning challenges.I would have preferred a 14" deep x 16" diameter size.

The suspended floor tom is not a feature I like. I would have preferred legs, which would have given me more flexibility in where and how I placed it.

Despite the issues this kit is professional quality in every respect and makes a great second kit for acoustic of jazz gigs and small venues, or a perfect first kit for drummers of all age and experience ranges. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is meant to do
I always wanted to learn to play the drums and was really excited about electronic drum sets. I live in a condo, thin walls, where playing a drum is just not going to go over.

But I was not able to afford the sets I saw online and at the music store. I could not figure out why the Pacific Digital set was so much cheaper until I realized it does not come with the computer hardware the other ones come with, and you have to use a computer hardrive you already have. Not a problem for me. the only problem is that I have sound drivers and software on my computer that are not compatible with what they sell you. So, I can't play the games that come with it. It still works for playing drums, though. The music they sell for you to play along with is stuff I have never heard in my life but I can't use it anyway so I guess that does not matter.

Set up is simple if you read the instructions. It is solid, pieces are made out of real metal with a strong feel and a good finish, and the rubber pads are durable. The stand does not walk around, and the pads stay put reasonably well. You do have to tighten once in a while, and I am thinking about maybe putting some of that rubber drawer lining they sell now between theclamps and the metal rods to help them stay put.

The lesson section on the CD was okay for the first two days, but then I was glad to get the Sandy Gennaro Ultimate Basic Drum Lesson DVD I had ordered as a back up. That guy is great!

So, I will play with this for a while and have fun. If I really take to it and I think it is worth it, I will get a nicer set. In the meantime, it meets the need.

3-0 out of 5 stars They're cheaper than practice pads that do nothing
I am waiting for a house to be built so that I can play my accoustic drums. Let's face it, nothing is like real drums. I purchased a Yamaha DTX electronic set for a thousand bucks and sold them. My house is taking longer than expected so I looked into practice pads and found these things. Let me tell you, for 90 bucks or so they're not bad. The base pedal is very plastic and I know will break soon but overall I get my workout somewhat and they're just as robust as the Yamaha set. You can't find practice pads for under 100 bucks. So why not?

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT
Do not buy!!!!This item had potential. The rack mount is good and the setup was fairly easy but the lack of customer support from PD makes it almost useless. The interface software included with the kit is just plain awful!!!For the low price I wasn't expecting much, but believe me, I got even less than expected.

1-0 out of 5 stars save up for real drums.
i recently bought pacific digital's drumxtreme with all intentions of using this product as a beginner's tool.i hate to say that i am dissapointed with it though.for starts, the software that comes with it hardly works, meaning the "music game, etc." doesn't work, so therefore one cannot play along with music.all it basically does is let you bang on the drums and try to figure out things for yourself.so why not get real drums instead?this product promises a good beginner's experience but does not deliver it.the sound is not good quality, and the toms are barely audiable.not to mention that this model doesn't come with a hi hat pedal, leaving the beginner to use their arm - which complicates things in the beginning and could leave one frustrated.sure, there are other models that offer this, but for one who is on a budget and just looking to begin drums, this one seems like the best bet.i personally wish i would've kept my money and used it on real drums instead, which i am going to have to do now.so save yourself the trouble, if you want to begin - begin on real drums and get the real experience, dont be fooled by this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for parents to buy for children
This great for kids who want a drum kit. Parents won't have to listen to the noise that a real wood drum set can make. For a professional, probably not a road worthy buy, but for a beginner and for the low price it is a good buy. All you need is a pc and it doesn't cost $1000 to $4500 dollars... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tools - great for MIDI input...
I bought this today on a whim after playing around with it for about 15 minutes at BJs... I have been looking for a digital kit to mess around with as I have no space or quiet in my apartment to practice.

General feel - I have to agree with the acoustic drummers out there - the hi-hat is very difficult to control. It also seems to be limited in the number of voices that can be played on a sound at once - this may be a limitation of the machine itself, it may not affect a drum module being sent MIDI info. In an ttempt to eliminate MIDI 'noise' the machine dampens notes which are too quiet, but also apparently too close together. So that if you do not play with a firm hand when you tap the hat, the second bounce of the stick can kill the sound altogether (i.e. it won't continue playing the original note) In other words, depending on how rough you play, you may get some stutters occassionally - the alternative it drop-outs, as a few users noted - the pads are small, which is actually good. It means that in terms of practice, I have to pay a lot more attention to where I am hitting.

What sold me on the item was the patch selection interface and controls. The sounds are typical sounds for a GS device - I think my sound canvas has about the same quality of sounds in its drum voice. The MIDI compatability is par - no aftertouch, but then again, these are drums. You can load a midi composition of your own to practice to, which is GREAT. If that aspect were beefed up, I could really get into this thing. I also found it was great to have a metronome available that was out of the recording loop - that is, if you are passing the MIDI onto another module for recording.

Oh yeah, this would be a great starter kit and/or kids toy, although I think it would not be too good for young kids.

Pros: Good sounds, good MIDI, good practice options.
Cons: Stutters or dropped notes, quiet high hat in the default position with the default sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic compact drum kit, ready to be amped up!
I received this product from Amazon a few days ago. I've already put it through it's paces and it holds up pretty well. One reviewer was commenting on amplifying the sound. I ran a standard 1/4 cord from the DD55 headphone jack, into an Alesis Quadreverb (I guess any pre-amp would work), and then plugged the Quardreverb into my Peavey Amplifier. BAM! Rock and Roll! Drums as loud as you can stand it. The sound quality is hard to judge coming through the small speakers embedded in the DD55. Even using a decent pair of headphones the sound quality improves dramatically. Through the Amplifier; forget about it. It sounds better than A LOT of drums I hear in concert.

If I could make one adjustment, I would add more than one customizable set. There are over 200 great sounds in the DD55, so the number of unique kits you could create is vast. Yamaha does supply their premade kits. They are okay, but for instance, they have fantastic retro electronic drum sounds, but none of their premade kits use them. I don't want to "waste" my only custom set on a kit that I would use for just a novelty song.

Overall it's a great purchase. I bought it just so I could take it to band practice, instead of lugging around my full size kit. You drummers out there know what I'm talking about. And now that I can amplify it, it does the job I need. No fuss, no muss. Finally, this is the best price I've seen; $40 less than Sam Ash or Musician's Friend.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun!
I bought this as a gift for my 12 year old son.I think I've had as much fun with it as he has!Neither of us are "drummers" and I'm guessing that a serious drummer would probably have little use for this.BUT...it's definitely more than a "toy" and it's a heck of a lot of fun for the rest of us!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Results
My 2 cents... First, the sampled sounds are really quite good. If a closet drummer out there is looking for fun way to explore the drumming experience, then I would rate it 4 stars. However, as an acoustic drummer, several aspects of this kit really frustrated me:

    1) The Hi-hat sound is TOO soft. The sound of the stick hitting the rubber pad is as loud as the closed HH sound. It destroys the aesthetic. Of course, this is solved by running the system through an amp, but that defeats the notion of low volume jamming.

    2) The triggers aren't that "touch-sensitive". I believe the claim is 6 levels of volume sensitivity. In practice, I could reliably produce maybe 2 with sticks. I had slightly more control playing with fingers. However, the bigger issue is reliably generating any sound at all when striking the rubber pad. Even if it catches 19/20 strikes, it doesn't take very many misses to drive you crazy. Thus, playing live with this as your entire kit is all but impossible.

    3) As mentioned in another review, the foot triggers are tough to control with finesse.

In my opinion, the very best use for this is as a rhythm teacher and advanced practice metronome. It comes packed with preset rhythm styles and associated synth music. One can vary the tempo for each style and drop/add the music and each voice of the rhythm groove separately. I like to listen to the machine with headphones while playing real drums to learn new styles and to practice rock-solid timing and syncopation. For this use, I give it 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT! Plug into an amp or pa and stand back!
Almost everything about the dd55 is good. I wish they made these 30 years ago and I know I would be a better drummer. Any one who plays drums should have this machine, even if you own a huge set of acoustics. If your kid plays, you MUST have this machine, as he can learn more quickly, experience more diverse sounds, play with accompaniment, and play at a low volume level, which translates into more potential practice time, with less setup and hassle. Let's face it: acoustic drums are loud and obnoxious to most non drummers except when played along with other instruments. The dd55 snare sounds are great, the tom sounds are great, the kick sounds are great, hi hat great, ride and bell and other sounds are very good. Crash cymbals are weak, and too few. I would say with a few minor upgrades, this system could potentially become the "drums" of the future. I am in my 40's and played in bands years ago and know the "pain" of a huge set: set up, tuning, miking, sound check, tear down, hauling, cleaning, maintenance, and inconsistency of sound! (I always felt drummers should get bounus pay for all that!) My opinion for improvement: (1) better crash cymbal sounds. This is the only weakness I have found as the crash sounds are not rich and full, but rather sound short and a little "dirty".(2)at least 2 more "small" pads on theright side for bell and ride cymbal sounds. As it is now, if you want a 5 piece kit, you are limited to only 2 cymbal sounds other than hi hat. That means one crash, one ride, so what about a bell (cup), and a second crash, and even a cowbell, etc? To keep the unit small Yamaha could even make the cymbal pads a bit smaller if necessary. SUMMARY: I LOVE IT AND THINK THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF GREAT THINGS IN MODERN DRUMMING AND WILL MAKE DRUMMING A MORE ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE FOR FUTURE PERCUSSIONISTS! ... Read more
