My personal favorite for acoustic jazz
I recently purchased this cymbal after extensive searching, trying various K Custom models, and finally settling on this particular one.

First, a few caveats when buying a K Custom - all of these cymbals are hand hammered and each has a distinct, unique personality and sound.For example, when I listened to the sound sample on Zildjian's site (paste the ASIN number, B00006AZMI, into the search box, select All Products and click GO), the sound is a bit different from the actual cymbal I received.Second, if you are seeking cymbals that are cutting or project, the K Custom series is not for you.

Zildjian describes this cymbal as dark and warm with trashy crash qualities.Mine roughly fits that description, but can also be airy and washy, with over- and under-tones, depending on how you play it.I've even managed to get a bit of a shimmer from it with a stick technique that uses about a third of the stick surface when riding the cymbal.Moreover, while Zildjian's sound sample did impart a 'trashy crash', the cymbal I have does not have this quality in a pronounced way.It does manage to combine articulation with a lot of sustain (I know that sounds odd, but it's true.)

I said that this cymbal does not cut or project - you can literally carry on a normal conversation a foot away when riding this cymbal. The crash washes, but does not project.Horrible for rock, but perfect for acoustic jazz, and that is where this cymbal excells. ... Read more

Great starter kit
Although the ZBT (Zildjian Bronze Technology) series is not nearly as good as the Zildjian A or K series, they are a major step up from Zildjian's Planet Z series.

This particular package is a real value because you get a complete set of relatively decent sounding cymbals that will seed a starter drum kit, yet grow with a drummer as his or her skills increase.These cymbals sound good, with more than adequate projection for most music genres, and a bright tone.

What you get: a pair of 14" hi-hat cymbals that are capable of producing a nice 'chick' sound, as well as a good wash in partially open position. The package also includes a 16" crash that has good cutting qualities and a fairly rapid decay, an 18" crash/ride with slight sustain and a bright ping (and the bell plays nicely too).Finally you get a 20" with a slight sustain and a very bright ping. As a bonus this package also comes with a 20" cymbal bag, which will protect your investment in this set when you go to gigs.

Not only is this a good set for beginners, but will also work well for more advanced drummers who are on a budget. Great beginner kit - can be easily upgraded to pro kit
This is a solid kit that will serve the beginning-to-intermediate drummer well.The hardware is solid and stable, and the tonal quality of each drum is excellent with minimal ringing.The two critical hardware features - hi-hat stand and bass pedal - are sufficient for beginning and intermediate drummers, but are a bit unresponsive for pros. To complete this kit I recommend getting good cymbals. Any of the following cymbal packs will give this kit all of the cymbal power most drummers will need at the same value point as the drum kit itself: Sabian B8 Performance Set With Bag (ASIN B0002L54TE), Paiste 302 Plus Standard Cymbal Set (ASIN B0002D0NU2), or the Zildjian ZBT Series Basic Set Up 4 Pack (ASIN B0002CZXXA).

The best kept secret, though, is how easy it is to upgrade this kit to a professional quality kit that even a seasoned drummer will appreciate.Just replace the heads, which are OK for less experienced drummers, but too thin and unresponsive for professionals, with the Remo Emperor Standard ProPack (ASIN B0002F514I) and Remo Weatherking bass head (ASIN B0002E57G6), carefully tune them, and you will have a kit that sounds and plays like a high-end Ludwig kit.I also recommend that any experienced drummer select the hi-hat stand and bass pedal of their choice to bring this kit to professional standards. I use the Pearl H70W hi hat stand and P70 bass drum pedal from my Pearl Rhythm Traveler kit (ASIN B0002FO4R8).

Excellent deal on entry-level cymbals
When it comes to entry level cymbals this set is one of what I consider to be the main choices if you want to purchase a decent set of quality cymbals at a good price.

You get the basic essentials with a large pair of 14" hi-hats, a 16" crash and 20" ride cymbal, plus a bonus cymbal bag.These cymbals sound great and will continue to serve the beginner well as he or she moves into intermediate and advanced skills (and gigs).

However, if you are buying an entry-level drum kit for someone be aware that there are two other cymbal brands that have similar performance and set-up packs in the same approximate price range. Cymbal brands are almost a religion with drummers, and beginners are no exception. Find out if Sabian is the preferred brand, or if Zildjian or Paiste is more to their liking. If Paiste, I recommend that you consider the Paiste 302 Plus Standard Cymbal Set (ASIN B0002D0NU2). If Zildjian, consider the Zildjian ZBT Series Basic Set Up 4 Pack (ASIN B0002CZXXA).
