Surprised sound quality.
Pleasantly surprised with the sound quality in such a small and light device. Earbuds just so so. (Use my own superior earbuds, so it's okay.) The FM tuner reception is not that good, that's why the four stars. Bought this manufacturer-refurbished for about $50. Spend an additional $27 for an SD 512 mb flash memory(512 mb works in the external memory slot!). The software works well with my Windows XP/Windows Media 10. For less than $80 I get 640 mb of total memory, more than enough for what I need.

Better hope nothing breaks cuz you'll be buying a new one
Rio no longer supports this model and the Sports case is cheap and breaks easily. Once it breaks, you are out of luck because Rio only carries replacement parts for their newest models. Do yourself a favor and buy something dependable with good product support such as Ipod, Iriver, or CreativeLabs..Leave Rio alone.

So far so good
I've had my Rio for a couple of days now. It's been working great. The bundled software is not all that great, but if you have Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10 then you can use that. The player has good sound and is really durable. The armband took me a minute to figure out but everything works great. The internal memory is a nice starting size. I was able to fit 54 tracks on my internal memory (64Kbps - WMA format). I bought a 128MB card for $18 and that works perfect and now I have over 100 tracks on my player. I've been hearing that the player can handle cards up to 512MB despite what the specs say. I haven't tested it so it's still a rumor to me.

In conclusion, for the price this player is a very good buy. I use it when i work out and the armband is a nifty way to keep the player close but out of the way. I'm not sure is the USB interface is version 1 or 2 but the interface is really quick. When I update my track listing it takes about 1 minute and a half to transfer 54 tracks to my player. Check the Rio site frequently for firmware upgrades. When I got mine i had to upgrade the firmware which is a sinch and take about 30 seconds to do.

Just to add, many have complained about how the player tends to slip out of the armband when you move excessively (ex. Running or jogging). I have to say that I use my Rio everyday while running and have yet to have it slip out of the armband. I run just like everyone else, and wear it while playing basketball also and it has not fallen once.

Great, But It Has a Few Flaws
The Rio Sport is an excellent little mp3 player.The sound quality is great as is the display. While, the original model came with only 128MB of internal memory, it has an SD slot making expansion fairly inexpensive, especially in 2005 when 512MB is available for $50.

In general, the construction is rugged with a rubberized enclosure apparently meant to reduce the affects of impact from dropping. It is also has a rather compact, odd shape that is probably less than ideal for someone wanting to store it in his pocket.

While there are a handful of small design flaws, two features that are particularly annoying.First, it has a four position concave rocker switch that is extremely sensitive.While this is great to use blindly with your thumb, it creates a real problem when placing the unit in a pocket as switch easily depresses, causing the RIO to change songs, stop, or pause.

In short, the Rio Sport is a decent mp3 player that could use a couple of minor interface modifications and feature enhancements

Great little mp3 player
I used mine over 8 hours a week for over two years in a gym.It took many hard hits and continued to work.It worked for 6 months even after the plastic case was cracked.But the internal memory is starting to fail.Perhaps using it in a steam room was just too much for it.Very well made! ... this is a very good mp3 player.It only has 64mb but it plays track very good.It never skips but my advice is dont drop it because if u drop it on the wrong spor it can like open up but all u have to is push it back togetheryea just dont drop it

This is a great cheap player, nice interface.

You can add the one gigabyte SD cards.(I bought a 1 gig Sandisk for cheap), you may need to update the firmware (you should anyway, it is very easy to do).

Only took off a star because the SQ while excellent was not up the the Rio Karma I own (I guess that is expected as that may be the best sounding DAP on the market). SQ overall is great but I want everything for nothing and dont hand out 5 stars :)

A fantastic little thing
I love this mp3 player! I've had it for about 1 1/2 years. It has been through a lot, and it's still working fine. If you bought one, you probably wouldn't abuse it as much as I did. Mine has been through drops, some water, and just some general wear and tear, but all it has to show for it is a few scratches!
One of the reasons I chose Rio was because of the large screen, with which I could see much of the info about the song, like the artist and album. Many others have only one line of info, and you must wait for it to scroll or something like that. Also, the rubber outside is a plus. It feels very nice, and has a nice grip. It could definetely have more memory, but since it has a memory card slot, it isnt really a problem for me. Some of the new Rio players, and many other mp3 players, have a stick control, where one stick controls all of the play/pause etc. This Rio has a larger control pad, which I find to be much easier to use. The FM tuner...is a piece of junk. I could only get 5 or so stations that were remotely clear. Also, the stopwatch is very hard to use. You have to go through the menu and select your stopwatch mode in order to start/stop your stopwatch. Then, if you want to go back to your player mode, you must go through the menu again. But overall, this mp3 player is definetly worth the money.

Great Except for MMC Compatibilities
I had this mp3 player for almost about a year now and so far it has been really worth my money. Talking about the cost it is cheap and the performance is great save for i have to constantly buy new batteries, i guess the power consumption of this player is not that efficient.

I also bought myself a new 256Mb MMC and its quite frustrating to know that the player can only detect 128Mb while searching for additional info, the official support site said that it can support upto 1Gb. I upgraded to the latest firmware and yet it can only detect upto 128.

Aside from my MMC frustration, this device works perfectly well i dropped it several times and yet its still functioning properly except for the FM tuner. Im located here in the Philippines and the only radio stations who have good reception can be heard properly.

I considered buying a new mp3 player but i just settled for a new MMC since after a year this player still works fine for me. I can appreciate help for my MMC problems and i hope the support releases better versions of the firmware to support MMCs.

Excellent spherical cartridge and stylus
For those Stanton fans who use conical styli, club DJs, 45rpm collectors (as most 45s are made out of styrene and not vinyl, if you use an elliptical styli, they are likely to scratch another groove on the disc surface which only ruins the discs if you use the cartridges too much on 45s), fans of spherical (a.k.a. conical) styli for its low cue burn, this is the cartridge for you.It is not intended for most hi-fi applications but for what it is, it is a great cartridge.I played a somewhat scratched vinyl of Amy Grant's "Unguarded" with this cartridge and the surface noise got reduced well with this cartridge while my Stanton 680 EL II (elliptical cartridge) which I recommend for most hi-fi purposes plays it with surface noise.This is the industry standard for spherical styli and cartridges and is one of the cheapest for this purpose plus the styli can easily be replaced.

Be Happy It Won't Burn Your Records...
Those who are going to purchase this need to pay close attention to the fact that this is for studio-club standard or club DJ and scratching purposes. This is something to play records loud at a venue where the crowd is not going to be analyzing whether you used a mid-end or hi-end set up---who will care as long as the music is going.This also indicates that the Stanton 500 is not for audiophile casual listening purposes to play your favorite classical or jazz records for it's frequency range is somewhat limited and will not track very complex passages, especially loaded with high frequencies. Most low-burn cartridges will have a round stylus tip and not an elliptical or a costlier linear one. For those would not be DJ standard cartridges but your expensive in-home listening grades...The Stanton will get the job done, but it will not perform high end or audiophile quality sound or groundbreaking sonic miracles !

Cheap, reliable, low cue-burn
This cartridge has a spherical stylus, which gives low record burn. The other review has it wrong. I have two on my 1210s and they work fine. I am going to upgrade to the Shure M44s some time because they give even lower record burn and have a higher output and wider frequency range.
