Bad choice!
Ordered first guitar from Musician's Friend and it came with a crack in the body!Called them and they payed for the return shipping.I had to place another order for the replacement guitar because I needed it by the weekend for a birthday present to my nephew.Well I got the second guitar only to find a nail sticking out of the back of the body of the guitar!!!When I played it the strings would hit the other frets driving me crazy.Sent them the second guitar back as you may have guessed.Would never order this or any other item from this company.

A great guitar for the price
This is my second guitar so I am hardly an expert but it is beautiful to look at, has a great sound, and is well constructed.

Awesome( A 12 year old kid)
This is a great guitar. I got it for a birthday present. It sounds great. Mine came with a gig bag. I am taking lesons with it. I already knew most chords from my 30 inch acousic First Act. Excellent for the money
I bought one of these for my daughter, and was very surprised at how much guitar you get for the low price point. It tuned up quickly, stayed in tune, had decent intonation up through the 12th fret, and was fun to play with a sweet, solid tone. Based on my experience, and that of a lot of other reviews I've seen elsewhere, I think the chap who gave it one star unfortunately got a dud. This guitar compared well with ones around $100-150, so give it a look.

Beware!! It is more a toy than an instrument
Having never played the guitar and wanting to learn, I bought one of these with high hopes on it being a nice starter.When it arrived it seemed a little small but I was assured that it was meant to be small and that it would make it easier to learn on. I accepted that but was still a bit put off by the shoddy quality. I had a friend who is a very accomplished guitarist tune it for me and as he did, several strings broke right off the bat. Restrung, we moved to a second attempt at tuning it. None of the strings would stay in tune and after several adjustments, the bridge actually seperated from the body of the guitar, rendering it unplayable. Don't be duped. This is a toy guitar. They market it towards kids because most will just be playing with it and banging on it, no concern for actual correctness And they market it towards beginners hoping that people will be looking at price, not investigating quality. If that's what you're looking for, then this is perfect. I found out the hard way: If you're serious about learing the guitar, make the inital investment for a decent one. Visit an actual store and try a few out, ask questions, shop around. I've found quite a few nice beginner guitars for a little over $100. And if you make the investment in a nicer instrument, you're more likely to recoup most of your losses if learning it doesn't work out or when you're ready to move on to a better one.This poor example, I would be surpised if I could give it away. Plays rights - sounds weak
The Martin Backpacker instruments are very useful for the person who:
1. Wants an instrument that "feels right" - meaning the frets are in the right place, the intonation is accurate, the scale is correct, etc.
2. Wants an instrument that you can literally throw into a duffel back or backpack and carry into remote places. (Many American Servicemen I know took them on deployments.)

The tradeoff is that the teeny-tiny sound-box produces a small, tinny noise that is weak in volume and almost metallic in tone - the closest thing I can think of to describe what it SOUNDS like is one of those old hand-cranked jack-in-the-boxes.

It DOES play right, though, and if you want an instrument that will keep your fingers in shape, is decent to practice on, and you CAN take it anywhere you can sling it over your shoulder - then the Martin Backpacker is right up your alley.

Well worth adding to the guitar collection
Well this will never become your primary guitar but if you're into bringing your guitar with you when you travel this is probably one of the better options.

Technically the sound is a little thin and holding it can be difficult to master. In addition I think most people have a bit of a post-purchase "why did I buy this!" But once you have played it a bit and especially after you have travelled with it I'm sure you will find it to be indispensable. Personally I actually have begun to like the sound of the guitar - it's quite unique and can offer all sorts of nuances if you take the time to find them out. So I often find myself at home using the Martin rather than my `good' guitar.

I have mostly used the guitar when travelling interstate for work and on the odd overseas holiday. Its size and sturdy construction mean it can put up with all sorts of treatment and still provide great sound.I have also have a Yamaha Silent guitar which has been a few places but I always find myself coming back to the little Martin. It feels much nicer to play and is so easy to carry about. Combine this with a good selection of sheet music in PDF on my laptop and I'm pretty much set for any destination.

The only advice I'd offer a new owner is to have a look at the strings. I got some really nice sounds from the guitar using Augustine Blues which were well worth the price. I also met a guy who said that pretty much any Flamenco guitar string was worth trying on the Martin.

Also take the time getting used to using the strap before you go the `surgery' option and start using knee rests or attachable frames. It will feel very strange for quite a while until you get used to how it feels. One word of warning - once you get it right don't let anyone adjust your strap ;o).

Not a good sounding Instument
Even though this guitar is Easy to carry around and travel with and is fun to Play, the sound quality is seriously lacking.My recomendation would Be to get a Baby taylor Guitar instead.

This guitar DOES have a BIG SOUND for a small price
I was thrilled when my guitar arrived and even more so after I tuned it and began to play.

My guitar is absolutely beautiful. The finish is flawless. And it's got that new guitar smell...ahhhhhh.

It does have a pick guard (that is not shown in the photo on any website or in any catalog) which pleases me. It would be a shame to scratch the surface while strumming with a heavier pick. I read one review on a music vendor's website where the reviewer complained about Takamine and Jasmine printed all over the pick guard. And they were right about that...but I found it very easy to remove all these words by simply peeling off this protective sticker. Dah.

The strings are a little heavier than I like but I'll be changing them in a few weeks anyway.

The sound and craftsmanship is anything but what you would expect from such an affordable guitar and everything you'd expect to pay more for. It has a rich, full bodied sound.
