A bit disappointing
Let's face it, when you purchase a guitar with all this fretboard inlay work, you really want a pretty guitar and a perfect finish. Unfortunately the first Key Largo Musician's Friend shipped to me had serious scratches in the picking area. It looked to me like it had been played quite a bit already by someone who wasn't too careful about his jewelry. No problem getting it exchanged for another, but that meant a couple weeks more before I had the second attempt.

Unfortunately the second guitar had some issues as well, although I opted to keep this one rather than go through the swap routine once more. The electronics box in the side of the body wasn't seated all the way in its mount, and couldn't be fully seated. I had to unscrew the whole assembly from the body and get the wiring untwisted inside the mount so that the electronics could seat properly. It also has a blemish in the finish where the neck & body join, but this was minor enough that I decided to live with it. I'd much rather play guitars than ship them back and forth around the countyside.

This was my first purchase of a Dean instrument, and I have to say I'm not all that impressed with the quality control. I've an Ibanez Talman guitar that cost me less than half what the Key Largo did and quality wise I think the Ibanez comes out ahead. Granted the Ibanez doesn't have all the fancy inlay work, but at least the finish is quality and the electronics were correctly installed at the factory. ... Read more

Best sound I could find
I am a semi-pro member ofa regional acoustic trio that features a plethora of old time, Appalachian, and originals ....I purchased my Cumberland Jumbo instead of the Martin I had intended to buy.The deep rich bass and clear bell tone highs combined with the overall quality of construction and binding sold me on the spot and saved me quite a bundle (actually I did't save since I now had enough left over for a new Mandolin).I combined the purchase with the Washburn Jumbo hard case (a must have addition).Now some specifics:

The neck and action are suited for almost any playing style, from plain chording to intricate delta and Hawaiian tunings and hard strum or finger picking.The cut and shaping of the neck are reminiscent of the older original telecasters, and yet possess a more controllable bend and stretch.The fretting holds absolute "true", with a slight need to bend betweenC fret and E fret on the G string.When combined with nickle plated strings of " medium" gauges the sound is full and rich and still easy to solo a lead.

The "break-in'period was easily accomplished by placing the Cumberland, on it's stand' facing my Koss speakers for a week while tuned to a classical music station providing all of the needed frequencies and overtones . After the week I had no qualms about restringing and using it as my only guitar at a live gig (3 hrs) I was happily surprised to only need some minor tuning adjustments and only after hard strums or heavy note bending

The pickup/pre amp ( with feedback blanking)is superb and can be adjusted toadd "fill" or "cranked and EQ'd" to rival a Strat or Les Paul.The substantial interior ribbing takes nothing away from the sound...on the contrary it appears that the ribbing was designed with both strength AND acoustics in mind.

The exterior finish and Mother of pearl inlays look quite impressive and are well done with out being overdone.This is one Guitar that should not be overlooked and should enter into consideration when acquiring a serious performance instrument.While Washburn does not have the same brand recognition as Martin, Taylor. or Gibson most of us play for the sound - not the bragging rights !In my opinion the next step up would be a custom made KOA wood and at least 7-10 times the price.
